OPI Pink Yet Lavender Swatches & Review (Layered Over Pretty Serious Hot Summer Nights)

OPI Pink Yet Lavender Swatches & ReviewWhile I’m obsessed with the Liquid Sands, that doesn’t mean I neglected the rest of the Mariah Carey by OPI Collection!

Ever since I got OPI Pink Yet Lavender, I’ve been dying to layer it over another colour.

Pretty Serious Hot Summer Nights was The Chosen One.

The two polishes became instant soul mates. I’ve even caught the extroverted glitter sneaking into my Helmer’s blue drawer to find Hot Summer Nights. 😉 (Haha, that could be interpreted in a variety of ways!)

The result was unexpected (I’ll explain later in this post), and I fell in love with it because it almost had a galactic vibe.

I swear this nail-polish combination wanted to live forever on my nails. A cute little shriek could be heard when it saw a cotton ball soaked with acetone getting closer…and closer…and closer! *Psycho knife/shower scene music here*

But it had a good run. And I’m pretty sure that I’ll wear this combination again. It’s one of my favourites!

Key Notes

OPI Pink Yet Lavender Review

Colour

Pink Yet Lavender by OPI is predominantly pale pink. I tried really hard to see the lavender shimmer they claimed was in it, but I just couldn’t. It looks pink to me.

There are also small glitter pieces that at first appear silver, but when you look at them in the sunlight, they seem to be holographic. (Unfortunately, in the lighting conditions I photographed it, the holo particles didn’t really show.)

The glitter in my above photos isn’t exactly accurate. Allow me to explain.

*Clears throat*

*Stretches fingers*

Pretty Serious Hot Summer Nights has a blue-jelly personality. When I first layered the glitter over, it looked normal. Then I applied Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat over everything, and that made the blue smear and bleed a bit over the glitter. That’s why the small pieces of glitter look blue (not silver or holographic) and why if you look closer at the edges of the larger pieces of glitter, it seems like they have a blue border.

Normally I don’t like my polish to bleed, but in this case, I thought the effect was surprisingly really cool! I got to wear blue and pink in the same manicure, which doesn’t happen often.

Since I wanted to show you accurate photos of what it looks like, I decided to swatch it over a bunch of different colours on a nail wheel so I could sleep with a good nailphile conscience. 😉 (Scroll further down to see what it looks like over 7 different polishes and in 3 different lighting conditions.)

Finish

Pink Yet Lavender by OPI is a glitter polish that has two sizes of glitter suspended in a clear base.

There was some texture, but I found that when I put on a top coat, it smoothed it out so much, so it didn’t feel gritty at all. It felt nearly as smooth as a creme!

Application & Formula

I was expecting Pink Yet Lavender to have a thick, glue-like consistency and be hard to work with. But…it totally had the perfect formula! It flowed onto the nail easily and smoothly. There was no clumping. And I found that it was pretty easy to get even coverage without having to push around glitter pieces with the brush.

Layering Combinations

Not all polishes that you layer under Pink Yet Lavender will smear and create a cool effect. It was a wonderful fluke that it happened to me!

So, below are some layering combinations that will hopefully give you a better idea of what it will typically look like.

(I’ve reviewed a few of these shades, so if you’re interested in reading the details, click on the links.)

For all of the below (Left-Right): Rescue Beauty Lounge Recycle, OPI Gargantuan Green Grape, Nicole by OPI Hit the Lights, China Glaze Ruby Deer, Nicole by OPI Naturally, China Glaze Liquid Leather & Zoya Caitlin

Pros

  • Adds fun bling to your manicure
  • Great coverage even with 1 coat
  • Smooth & even coverage
  • Pretty smooth finish isn’t as gritty as a typical glitter polish, especially after you use a top coat
  • 2 different sized glitter pieces
  • Small holo glitter (can be seen in the sunlight)
  • Clear base means you can layer this over nearly any other polish
Cons

  • Predominantly pink, despite the claim that it can look lavender (or maybe it’s just me who can’t see lavender!)

Final Verdict: 9/10

If you enjoy wearing glittery manicures or you like to spruce up an existing manicure with glitter when you’re in a pinch, I think you’ll really love this one.

It looks great over many different colours, but my favourites are over vampy hues…especially blue!

What would you layer under OPI Pink Yet Lavender? Can you see the lavender or mostly pink?

      Hey Gelic’ Nail Art!

Same! I don’t have many glitter polishes quite like this one. It looks like it can be used over so many different shades. Fun to experiment with!

      Hey Lizzy!

Glad you liked the combination! I really have a soft spot for dark blues and glitter – something about them reminding me of a night sky.

Just wondering, how does it compare to the OPI Katy Perry collection – Teenage Dream? I can’t find it anymore locally so I’ve been looking for a dupe.

      Hey Cara!

They’re pretty different, I’m sorry to say! Although there is a little holographic glitter in this, Teenage Dream is waaaay more holographic. (In case it helps, here’s a link to a review on OPI Teenage Dream I did back in 2011: http://www.swatchandlearn.com/opi-teenage-dream-swatches-review) You can compare the photos there and in this post to really see the difference.

The biggest difference is that the base of Teenage Dream is pink, and Pink Yet Lavender has a clear base.

Teenage Dream was hard for me to pull off, so I prefer Pink Yet Lavender. Also, I recommend Pink Yet Lavender because it’s easier to layer over other shades than with Teenage Dream.

Oh that looks awesome with the blue. I didn’t think much of the MariahCarey collection when I first saw it but your swatches are changing my mind! Might have to order a few 🙂

Also, I’m nearly out of base coat, any you would highly recommend?

As always, thanks for the great blog! – Sarah

      Hey Sarah!

Yeah, a lot of times, promotional photos can be misleading in that they don’t show off the true beauty of a polish. In person is really the only way to fairly judge them. 🙂

As far as base coats go, I really love Nubar Foundation Base Coat, but Nubar in general isn’t the easiest to get hold of. The other base coats I like are CND Stickey (it’s inexpensive and works well) and Essie First Base (which I’ve been trying more recently). Hope that helps!

Thank you for your encouragement. I really love reading comments from readers!

I am not a big glitter fan anymore – the look gets very old and makes me bored to keep looking at it after even 1 day – and darn if glitter does not make my mani last for a week at least! I hope we start to see less glitters esp from indies and more complex finish polishes. That said, I do like this one – it’s soft and very wearable over quite a few shades. This one I would not get tired of looking at – it’s got the softness of say OPI Pirouette My Whistle or Nubar White Polka Dot. I like it over this Pretty Serious blue. Thanks for the color ring with looks – we often don’t know about combos until we try – I tend to just use a sheet of white paper to test run combos.

      Hey beachgal!

Glad you enjoyed seeing the different colour combinations. I had fun experimenting! And you’re right – a lot of times, we don’t know until we try. It’s fun to see how the effect can change depending on the base colour!
