L.A. Girl Rock Star Punk Review & Swatches

A few months ago, I did a Cherry Culture haul post where I revealed my Santa Claus sack-sized loot. L.A. Girl Rock Star Punk was the polish from that haul that I was the most excited about. In the bottle, it looks like a blue and purple duochrome. Blue and purple? My fave colors! How could I not be overwhelmed with joy when I finally got a bottle of it in my hands.

I kind of set myself up for disappointment on this one. The color is pretty. I would describe it as a midnight blue with stars, but the duochrome-y effect is very subtle. It’s a blue dominate color that I would otherwise love. But I was expecting the purple to be more apparent! I took lots and lots of pictures to capture the purple, but it’s really hard.

LA Girl Punk Review

Color

If you told me that LA Girl is just a pretty blue, I would absolutely love it. It’s a gorgeous dark navy blue with these tiny glassy-flecky-like particles that rebounds the light. So pretty! If you’re in good lighting, the blue lightens up and you can really see the depths of the polish with the particles. In dim lighting though, you mostly get a dark navy.

And if you’re lucky and catch the right light, you’ll also see a deep violet glowing from within. But I don’t see this often. I’d really have to look. It might be because the purple and blue are so dark and similar that you can’t really see the contrast when the color shifts.

Opacity

The 1st coat of L.A. Girl Punk goes on sheer. Where the polish gathers around the brush, it’s darker like water paint. It’s uneven and blotchy. But I paid it no mind since it’s the first coat.

The 2nd coat gives you more intensity in terms of the color and the particles. I could still see the nail, so I added a 3rd coat. The color you see in the swatches is with 3 coats, and I don’t think it’ll intensify even more with another coat.

Consistency & Application

LA Girl Rock Star Punk applies like a normal polish. The formula isn’t goopy or gunky so it goes on smoothly without a worry. It’s also not so liquidy that it spreads all over the nail. As I mentioned, the 1st coat doesn’t look even, but the 2nd and 3rd coats will even out the color.

Finish

Love how smooth and shiny LA Girl RockStar Punk is when it dries! But if you want to increase the beauty of the glass flecks even more, I’d add a glossy top coat. It’ll magnify the results.

Ingredients List

L.A. Girl RockStar Punk is big-3 free, so you can feel safe wearing this on your nails!

Click on my Cherry Culture haul post to see all the other items I got!

Pros

  • Toluene-, DBP- & formaldehyde-free
  • Pretty blue with glass flecks
  • Dries evenly & smoothly
  • Affordable
  • Collection has fun color names
Cons

  • Needs 3 coats
  • Can hardly see the purple

Final Verdict: 8/10

This collection came out a few years ago, and I think it’s staying around because the colors are pretty and the names are fun! I just wish that you can see more purple from Punk!

What do you think of this blue/purple color? Do you own any LA Girl Rock Star nail polishes?

I think this looks really pretty in your natural light shots, I can see the duochrome! Can’t see it at all indoors. I like the finish, though!

      Hi Nicole!

Yeah, I’m sad that the duochrome is so subtle. But it’s a pretty blue nonetheless, especially with the finish. 🙂

      Hi Amy!

Always thinking of nail stamping! 🙂 I like that. I might do a little nail art on top of this, if I have time before I have to remove it. 🙂 Happy stamping!

      Hi Marta!

I haven’t been at Suzy Shier in a long while, so I didn’t know they had LA Girl. Thanks for letting me know.

And OMG. You’re right: I like Cult Nails Living Water. Hahha. How’d you know! 😛

I know! I hate it when the color in the bottle is not exactly the same on the nails! Good thing I still like this shade though. 🙂

It is! And I love the finish, too. I still like looking at my nails even though the purple isn’t so apparent. 🙂

Blue and glittery, what’s not to love? 🙂 Haven’t tried any LA Girl polishes tho I saw them at Urban Planet. Maybe I’ll pick some up (including this, if I can find it!) next time I’m in the area. 😀

      Hi Carmela!

You’re right. Blue and glittery – it’s a winner just for having those attributes. 😛

I haven’t been at an Urban Planet in a long while. I’m finding out that all these places close by sell cool polishes. Maybe I need to revisit these places again.

This looks gorgeous on you, Fiona! I still haven’t tried Punk yet, but I’m sort of disappointed that the duochrome doesn’t show up that much. Still, it’s pretty, blue, and sparkly :D.
