Nail Art Tutorial: Snowflake Nails

Sunlight Snowflake Nails Nail Art Tutorial & SwatchesHere are the Snowflake Nails I’ve been wearing for quite some time. Actually, I procrastinated quite a bit when it came to snapping photos, so all these photos you see are of my 4-day-old manicure.

Later in this post, I show you how to recreate it. This is one of the easiest looks that I’ve ever done, and even if you have a shaky hand like I do, it’ll turn out great. Precision isn’t required for this design! 🙂

*Plays trumpet* All the pictures (except the step-by-step tutorial photos) were taken with my new camera! *Jumps up and down*

They were the result of my first 10 minutes fiddling around with the Canon EOS Rebel T3i DSLR camera. Even though it was my first time using a Canon camera and my first time using a DSLR, I found it to be extremely user-friendly.

I still have to experiment with it some more because there are so many cool settings I must try out so I can get more creative. For now, though, I was pleased with how it performed…especially in dim natural light (which was my true test because my old Sony Cyber-shot always produced grainy photos in that setting). Also, shades of blue like this gave my old camera a really hard time. Seemed like it ain’t no thang for the Canon! Continue reading

China Glaze Mistletoe Kisses Swatches & Review

China Glaze Mistletoe Kisses Swatches & ReviewSo…it’s the first day of December. How did time go by so quickly? It’s crazy how it’ll be Christmas soon.

To pay tribute to the changing seasons and fun holiday traditions, I decided to share China Glaze Mistletoe Kisses with you! It was part of the China Glaze ‘Tis the Season 2010 Collection.

I’ve always thought that hanging mistletoe at the top of a doorway was a very cute idea, even though I’ve never actually done it myself. Have you?

Hehe, when I was a teenager, and saw that my friend’s parents hung mistletoe, I kept hoping that they’d invite my crush over.

I had the whole thing planned out – I’d slyly inch him closer and closer to the mistletoe until it was too late. 😛 Needless to say, that never happened. However, I did end up getting my first kiss…just not under the mistletoe and it wasn’t a set-up. 😉

Do you have any fun mistletoe moments to share? I’d love to hear them because I’m a sucker for romantic stories…not the kind in cheesy novels with Fabio-type men, but the real-life variety (and still without Fabio – sorry, I’m not a fan)! Continue reading

China Glaze Frostbite Swatches & Review

Sunlight China Glaze Frostbite Swatches & ReviewMy hands and feet always get cold quickly in the winter even if I feel warm everywhere else. (My dad used to always say, “Cold hands. Warm heart.”)

While I tend to feel chilly quite quickly, I remember my father being almost resistant to the plummeting temperature.

Honestly, even when the mercury dropped so low, he’d be wearing just a short-sleeve dress shirt under his winter coat and his hands would still be warm. The only time he ever wore long sleeves in the winter was if we were hit with the rare intense blizzard!

I always wish I could be like that. Instead, I have to bundle up when Old Man Winter pays a visit!

Today I’m sharing China Glaze Frostbite with you. It hails from the old Ski Collection, and it’s one of my favourite blues to wear. Continue reading

Nail Art Tutorial: Frog Nails

Easy Frog Nails Nail Art Tutorial & SwatchHere are the Frog Nails I wore to IMATS Toronto (the event I recently blogged about).

Originally I wanted to do frog prince nails, but I misplaced my gold polish that I had planned to use for stamping on the crown. Other colours just weren’t right, so sadly, my green froggy had to be de-throned. (Hmm…suppose I could’ve just freehanded the crown, now that I think about it.)

I had also planned to stamp on some lips on an accent nail to make it look like he was gonna get his kiss.

On the upside, Mr. Frog wasn’t looking forward to smooching all those females who only thought they were princesses. 😉

This frog nail art is really easy to do, and I think it would be really fun if you did unconventional frogs in pink or purple instead of the traditional green like I did.

Also, consider painting on some flies for your accent nails with dotted lines to show their flight pattern. I think that would be so fun!

Come see how you can put some ribbit on your digits! 😉

China Glaze Glittering Garland Swatches & Review

Sunlight China Glaze Glittering Garland Swatches & ReviewIt’s hard to believe that the holidays are quickly approaching. To get into the festive spirit, I slicked on China Glaze Glittering Garland.

Have you put up your Christmas tree?

I have a baby Christmas tree with tiny gold and black ball ornaments on my kitchen counter. The tree also has some red berries on the tips. This year I may get a tiny angel ornament for the topper. My tree’s so small, I may have to look for an angel finger puppet, actually.

Back when I lived at home, we had a big, tall tree that I enjoyed putting up. We had so many decorations (both bought and home-made).

Sometimes it felt like opening up a time capsule because, over the years, we had a good assortment of ornaments from back when I was a baby up to when I was in high school.

Although the Christmas trees look gorgeous in the stores full of glittery and glistening decorations, I liked the one at my parents’ place more because when you looked at the tree, you saw our one-of-a-kind ornaments that reminded you of fond memories.

It used to be a tradition we had that, each year, we’d make a new ornament to commemorate that year. I miss that. I’m not sure why, but after high school, we stopped doing it.

One day, if I ever have a family of my own, I hope to rekindle that tradition. Of course, this greatly hinges upon me moving into a bigger place – I’m practically living in a shoebox now! There’s no room for a big tree, and I do miss it.

China Glaze Zombie Zest Swatches & Review

Natural Light China Glaze Zombie Zest Awakening Collection 2010 Swatches & Review smallerIf zombies saw China Glaze Zombie Zest, maybe they wouldn’t spend so much time moaning about braaaaainssss and more time painting and moaning for polissssssh! (Actually, that sounds more like me.)

This kind of swampy-green is what I reach for when I don’t know what to wear. It’s totally in my comfort zone. A general rule of thumb: If my mom wouldn’t like it, I probably would love it. When it comes to nail polish, makeup, and fashion, we are polar opposites.

Zombie Zest comes from last year’s China Glaze Awakening Collection, which I really enjoyed. Y’know, although I love their Christmas collections, I always get giddy with anticipation over their Hallowe’en collections.

Nail Art Tutorial: Haunted House Nails

Flash Haunted Mansion Halloween Nail Art TutorialAt first, this design may look like a Christmas tree next to an egg yolk or like a whole bunch of random dots. Haha!

They’re really supposed to be Haunted House Nails – see how the black house has all the lights on? The small yellow ‘light’ can be seen from the windows. And that big ol’ egg yolk? Imagine that it’s a moon in the sky.

In my other photos of it in different lighting, hope you’re able to humour me and see a haunted mansion at night. 🙂

I could see how you could tweak this design for Christmas. Instead of different-sized little dots, add multicoloured little dots for the string of lights.

To create this, I used a combination of nail stamping and freehand painting.

When I visited my mom on Sunday and showed her this, I asked her to guess what they were. “Dots!” She said. Hehe, okay, that’s technically correct. When I asked my boyfriend, he thought they were stylized Christmas trees. 😛

A man in his 50’s actually paused mid-sentence to tell me that he really liked my nails! (That was the first time an older man commented on my nails out of the blue…hehe, and on this Christmas-tree-and-egg-yolk design, too!)

There was also a little girl who kept staring at my nails on the subway. She was soooo cute! Every time I’d look at her, she’d look away and pretend that she wasn’t looking at my nails. Then, when I looked away, I could see her leaning forward to look at my fingers. Maybe she was trying to figure out what eggs had in common with trees. Or why someone had egged the tree. 😛
