Revlon Emerald City Matte Suede Review & Swatches

I’m drawn to green polishes like a zombie to brains. Neeeeeeed green nail polishes. Yummmmmmm.

My most-recent green-nail-polish purchase is Revlon Emerald City Matte Suede. In the bottle it doesn’t look all that unique – I’ve seen many dark greens like this before and actually own a few, but I was sold by it being a “Matte Suede”… although I have some bones to pick with Revlon about that. I wouldn’t classify this as suede, and it can barely be labeled as matte.

Plus, the name Emerald City? It’s not a very original name! Basically everything green is named that nowadays! That aside: I actually really do like this color. It’s deep and green and vibrant and deep and green and vibrant… Totally gorgeous. I think it’s one of my favorite green-green polishes that I’ve worn this year.

Revlon Matte Suede Emerald City Review

Revlon Matte Suede Emerald City is a lush forest green with tiny specks of green sparkles. It’s beautiful. But I actually like it more during application when the polish is still wet. The green sparkles twinkled more brilliantly when it was wet. As it dried and turned “matte,” the twinkling is less apparent.

I considered putting on a top coat to gloss it up and bring out the sparkles but vetoed that idea since I got this color for “Matte Suede.”

It’s a very shiny matte. It’s not glossy like your normal lacquers, but Revlon Emerald City is a polished matte, if that makes sense. It looks and feels like frosted glass – it doesn’t reflect light, but at the same time, there’s some shine to it. And it’s not suede at all. AT ALL.

Quite opaque, but definitely not a one-coater. I wanted to get away with just one application. Two coats result in intense color and complete evenness.

Since I didn’t wear a top coat, I didn’t expect Revlon Matte Emerald City to last me very long. And it didn’t. I saw a bit of chipping by the second day, even though it’s not major. Only small touch-up was needed.

Application & Consistency

I’m a huge fan of Revlon nail polishes. The ones I own all go on quite smoothly without complications, and Emerald City Matte Suede by Revlon is no exception. The consistency is smooth as liquid metal – not too thin, not too thick – it dries and goes on evenly.

Drying Time

Surprised at how fast Matte Suede Emerald City by Revlon dried. Takes only about 5 minutes before I feel safe putting on a second coat. Not bad!

Hard to photograph the list of ingredients in this curved bottle. But it says that Revlon Emerald City is a toluene- and formaldehyde-free formula.

  • Dries quickly
  • Beautiful lush green with green sparkles
  • Goes on evenly
  • Formaldehyde- & toluene-free
  • Great consistency

  • Chips easily
  • Not completely “matte” & definitely not “suede”

Final Verdict: 8.9/10

This color is so lush and dark that it reminds me of pine trees during Christmas. But I don’t care! I’m wearing it for summer, and you can’t stop me! The dark shade might not suit the hot heat, but I don’t think there should be a rule for when you can or cannot wear a color. 😛

Would you put a top coat on this beautiful green to bring out the sparkles, even though it’s a matte color? Do you prefer dark or light greens for summer?

I’m not normally a fan of green (or blue) nail polishes, but this one looks very classy on! This could be a nice holiday colour – a departure from the traditional glittery red polish for the holidays. I’m not surprised that it chips easily – I find most mattes chip quickly because you can’t wear a top coat with it. I guess it’s a good excuse to change up your polish more often! 🙂

Hi amarock! Yes, I agree! I think the dark color with the “matte” finish makes it very classy. I think it would be nice in December, but I’m wearing it in the summer anyway!

You’re right: it gives you an excuse to change to another color. 😛 Good thinking!

Ooohh this is really pretty! I’ve almost gotten this polish about three times before, but I’ve always put it back on the shelf…After these swatches I don’t think I’ll be able to do that anymore 😉

      Hi Poetic Realist!

I was soooo tempted to put a top coat on this because I loved it when it wasn’t completely dry. I just might now after hearing you say that!

Beautiful swatches! I bought this color a few months ago and only swatched it on one finger, so I have yet to wear it for an extended amount of time. I really love that it has shimmer. It adds something a little extra to keep it from being a typical matte color. I’m not exactly sure what suede is supposed to look like as this is my first time owning a color with that description. I’d definitely wear a top coat on it just to see what the result would be, but I probably wouldn’t do it that often. I feel like wearing it that way all the time would defeat the purpose of me buying it for the matte suede effect.

      Thanks, Melissa!

I know how you feel! I totally don’t want to put a top coat on this because I got it for the matte effect. But I think a TC would bring out the green shimmer more, making the green sort of ‘glow from within’!

I just purchased Emerald City a few nights ago, I completely agree with you on the color. It is a very very pretty green and it does have a little shimmer to it oddly enough. This was my first try with matte/suede so I had nothing to really compare it to. I also bought ruby ribbon and both colors turned out to be great shades for christmas. I also applied a clear top coat just to see the results, and it still looked really good, but lost any matte/suede quality ofcourse. But if you like the color and can give sacrifice the matte look, a top coat will help it last longer.

      Hey Frosso!

Back when Fiona wrote this post (when she was still blogging on here), I also was drooling over her swatches! Sometimes I see it at the store and consider picking it up. I’m a hopeless lover of green polish. 😉
