Like a lot of other nailphiles, I was really excited to see what OPI Peace & Love & OPI looked like on the nail.
It’s from the OPI San Francisco Collection that’s coming out on August 7.
It’s an interesting duochrome (although at times I thought I saw a third colour, which would make this a multichrome).
I wish that the sun came out when I was wearing this manicure, but Mr. Sun was shy, so I only have natural-light and flash photos to share with you.
I tried really hard to capture the duochrome by posing at weird angles. Hopefully you’ll be able to see the colour shift okay.

OPI Peace & Love & OPI Review
Colour
Peace & Love & OPI mostly looks like a duochrome, but at times, I was so sure that there was a third colour shift, so maybe it’s actually a multichrome.
The predominant colours are a deep teal and fuchsia. The shift between the two is easy to see – you won’t have to squint to see them.
However, photographing the shift was a bit tricky. With flash photography, I found it nearly impossible to show the two colours. And with natural lighting, I had to hold my hand at awkward angles.
Just when I thought it was a duochrome, as I was photographing it, I noticed that there’s a bit of silver that peeks through. The silver blends in a lot with the teal, so maybe that’s why I didn’t see it at first.
Finish
Although OPI’s press release on this collection said that Peace & Love & OPI is holographic, I didn’t see that at all. It had more of a multichrome-metallic, shimmery finish. Haha, I literally stared at this polish a lot, as though I could ‘will’ the holographic quality into existence. 😉
Perhaps it would come out in the sun, but in natural lighting and everyday conditions, I didn’t see even a faint holographic presence.
With this metallic finish, you can see visible brushstrokes. I know that’s a deal breaker for some. I was fine with them, but I think the manicure would look smoother with fewer showing.
Since these brushstrokes show, I suggest painting your nails a little slower so at least you can get all of them to line up instead of some going off on different angles.
This is the type of polish that doesn’t seem to look better when you apply a shiny top coat. It ends up looking exactly the same as if you wore it without. However, since I prefer to use a fast-drying top coat for my manicures, I used it over this polish.
Application & Formula
Applying this polish was really easy because the polish flowed wonderfully onto the nail and allowed me to work with it more before drying too quickly.
It covered the nail very well with just 2 medium coats, and I found the formula to be fuss-free, aside from the brushstrokes.
How Similar Is It to OPI Not Like the Movies?

In a nutshell, they’re not dupes. The predominant colour in Not Like the Movies is silver, and overall, the polish looks much lighter than Peace & Love & OPI. Also, Not Like the Movies has little tiny silver pieces, but Peace & Love & OPI has no glitter or pieces.

Although I realize lots of people will be disappointed that it’s not actually holographic, I still think it stands alone as a nice nail polish. The colour shift in Peace & Love & OPI is noticeable, and you’ll have fun looking at your nails at different angles.

OMG My favorite part has to be how opaque it is after two coats. Every time I grab a gorgeous duo-/multi-chrome that’s entirely too sheer I want to kick someone square in the head. :p I shouldn’t *have* to layer it over black!!! The color’s pretty gorgeous, too. lol

I was expecting it to be extremely sheer, so it was a nice surprise. I think it’s because of the metallic element to it that improves its opacity.

I’ve been waiting for this one! Love it. Duochromes almost always seem to be brushstroke-y (for me, at least), so I don’t really mind. I just apply carefully. It’s worth it for the effect. I definitely need this one!

What is up with a company as big as OPI not getting their terminology straight and labeling this a holographic polish? I mean, come on, that’s just sad! That said, I like this a lot better than Not Like the Movies (it was so sheer!) so I’ll probably pick it up when the collection comes out. This is one of the few colors I’m even interested in from the collection.

I was disappointed that it wasn’t holographic. Then again, I wore this when it wasn’t sunny out. I’ll have to take a closer look at the bottle in direct sunlight. Maybe some holographic quality will shine through.
Definitely this one’s not nearly as sheer as Not Like the Movies. 🙂
It’s pretty but it reminds me of Zoya Ki too much. Ki is lighter but the color shift is the same to me. I’m still swooning over the color and duochrome shift for this OPI though.

Ooh….it looks good under natural light but just blackish metallic with flash….is it difficult to see the duochrome in the shade?

Yeah, using flash photography really makes the polish look less interesting than it actually is. Even when I tried to use the flash at different angles, it didn’t show the multichrome.
The multichrome is harder to see in the shade. It’s definitely better in natural light that’s not too dim. And the shimmery quality comes out a lot in the sunlight.

When I saw your first post about the new OPI collection I was looking forward to see a swatch of Piece & Love & OPI . It dissapoints me really, I was expecting more. It is a nice polish but I don’t think I want to buy it anymore.

How would this OPI compare to Essence’s Chic Reloaded (which I bought but haven’t worn yet)? They look pretty similar in the bottle, I think?

That’s a really good question! I’ll have to pose the question to my readers who might know better. I don’t own Essence Chic Reloaded, and I also haven’t seen it in person. From online swatches, it does look similar to me.
I have both and they are *very* similar.
In Chic Reloaded, the green is more forest or kelly, the purple leans more blue, the shimmer is larger and the base looks a bit darker. Peace Love & OPI is more sage and eggplant, as advertised, has finer-grain shimmer and a lighter base. But, they are very, very close, so all those differences are very minor. Formula was quite good on both.
Essie’s For The Twill of It is a closer dupe for Peace Love & OPI then Chic Reloaded, but if you already have the essence one, it’s hardly worth bothering with the two new ones.

How close is this to Essie’s For the Twill of It?

I don’t own Essie For the Twill of It, but I did see it in person, and it seems like both are quite pigmented. The major difference I noticed was that Essie For the Twill of It leans heavy on the green side, but there are flashes of a magenta/purple. At first glance, yes, I’d say they’re comparable colours. But, to know the minute differences, I’d have to swatch them side-by-side. Unfortunately, I don’t have that shade.
I have this on hold for me for tomorrow when it is officially out, even though JC Penny had it in July and it’s pretty much gone and I didn’t know it. Anyway, I love love multichromes. However, I don’t like dark polishes. Feels like Elvira fingers. I’ll still get it because they’re holding it for me, but it won’t be a favorite. Also, I’m pretty bored with the green/ purple/ pink shifters. That’s way way overdone. Green to purple. Meh. I personally love the Mari Moon shifters and the Ludurana ones!! Now they are badass multichromes! =) OPI, China Glaze and drug store lines should learn from them! =)

It’s interesting how different retailers sell it before the official release. But, I’m glad it’s like that or else everyone would be swarming the stores to get hold of the colours. It would be like MAC’s launch of new collections – crazy town!
Yea, really, on the different releases! When I asked Penny’s, they said they got it in July and I was like, what?! And the Wal-Mart salon said they had it but couldn’t put it out yet till the 7th. Haha… something fishy going on, here! 😉 I’ve never seen Mac sold around here, but if like to try some of their polishes.

I compared this to the new Essie “For the Twill of It” and while the colors are very similar (at least under the store lights) I like the OPI better because it has more shimmer. I wasn’t sure which one I would get until seeing them both side by side and OPI is my pick.
I’ve never been so taken by a nail polish collection before, but naming them “San Francisco” colors really hooked me!

In the OPI gel version, it’s a lot more silver vs dark, but it does go holo outside at least in bright sun. Inside, it’s pink to fuschia to green to teal to blue…… It looks almost like an oil slick really.
