Nicole by OPI Stars at Night Swatches & Review (Layered Over OPI Vant to Bite My Neck?)

Nicole by OPI Stars at Night Swatches & ReviewSome people think that bar glitter makes their nails look hairy. Well, hun bun, if you want to see hairy (or furry), you should check out a flocking manicure I did not long ago.

So, in comparison,ย Nicole by OPI Stars at Nightย is the tame version of hairy nails. ๐Ÿ˜‰

This silver-holographic polish is part of the Selena Gomez Collection coming out in January 2013!

P.S. I never knew how many Selena Gomez fans are out there. After blogging about this collection, I found that out on Twitter! Wow, and they seem like a very loyal fan base, too!

Nicole by OPI Stars at Night Review

Colour

In a clear base are lots of silver pieces of bar glitter. You mainly see a fresh-looking silver, but when you look at your nails at awkward angles, you’ll see the holographic beauty shine through. You can see pretty much every colour of the rainbow – red, orange, yellow, green, purple, and blue.

When I first got the entire Nicole by OPI Selena Gomez Collection, I was staring at this polish in the bottle for quite some time. It sparkles so much, and I love how the colour dances like a sugar-pumped maniac!

Finish

This bar glitter has noticeable texture. It can be smoothed out when you wear a thick top coat. And although it was gritty, I was shocked that when I removed this manicure, I didn’t have to scrub and scrub and scrub my poor fingers raw! It all actually came off very easily…only slightly more difficult than a regular creme polish!

It might have been because I used only a single layer over a creme lacquer, but still! Impressive how easily it came off!

Also, it’s important to note that with bar glitter, you may need to push around the bars with your brush for even distribution. And if any bits hang beyond the free edge of your nail, you can file them down when the manicure’s dry to avoid any sharp scratchiness.

Application & Formula

I found that where I first placed my brush was where all the bar glitter wanted to hold a party. ๐Ÿ˜‰ And there’s quite a lot of clear base polish, so the glitter slides down your brush quickly like a kid on a slide at a water park. Be prepared for that! (The bar glitter’s practically screaming, “Weeeeeeeeeeee!”)

Once you expect the formula, it’s easy to work with. You just need to use your brush to push around the glitter. It’s not tedious – it actually spreads out pretty quickly.

Nicole by OPI Stars at Night dries very quickly. By the time you finish painting your second hand, your first hand should be relatively dry or even completely dry.

I don’t recommend using more than one coat because the more layers you use, the more challenging removal becomes. Also, since it’s bar glitter, you’d need to put on a bazillion coats if you want full opacity.

This is definitely a polish that looks best layered over another polish, and I suggest using a dark shade so the glitter really pops! Of course, you can do whatever you want. (Reader: “Mary, you’re not my real nail-polish mother!”) Feel free to wear this any way that makes you happy. Remember, polish is all about having fun. If a rule doesn’t fit, throw it out the window. They’re your nails, so they’ll abide by your rules. ๐Ÿ™‚

Happy polishing!

Pros

  • Brilliant silver bar glitter that has a holographic effect
  • Can be layered over another polish for a festive look
  • Easier to remove than typical glitter!
Cons

  • You need to push around the glitter to evenly distribute it
  • Layering several coats will make it harder to remove

Final Verdict: 6.5/10

Nicole by OPI Stars at Night is a fun polish to have in your collection. If you aren’t afraid of having nails that look a little hairy, I say try it! Your nails only live once. ๐Ÿ˜‰ Well, even if they live more than that, they still want to see what a nail toupee looks like. Haha! (This polish is like a nail wig meant for a go-go dancer!)

Would you sport this silver-holographic bar glitter? Have you thought of what you’ll be wearing on your nails during the holidays?

This one reminds me a lot of the silver rainbow bar glitter in the Zoya Ornate holiday 2012 collection. I am getting used to a heavy bar glitter since we have seen so many ‘fully loaded’ kinds of polish with all kinds of textures and polishes that now are packed with speckles of all kinds of color combos without even having any grit to them. I have to be in the right mood to rock a full bar glitter still now, but not opposed to it like I was at one time.

      Hey beachgal!

It’s pretty cool how bar glitter has become trendy again. I remember years ago, you could find it commonly at the drugstore…and then it disappeared for a while. Guess sometimes even nail polishes need to go on vacation. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I agree with you – I have to be in the right mood to sport bar glitter. It tends to be a lot funkier than regular glitter.

      Hey Marisa!

I haven’t worn too many bar glitters, but from the ones I’ve tried, this one has a way better formula than most. I think it’s because there’s more clear nail polish that coats each piece of glitter. That not only helps to smooth out the pieces a bit, but when it’s on your nails, you have more time to move everything around with the brush before it sets.

I really love glitters…except bar glitter. And I’ve never thought about it as looking hairy but it totally does! So yeah, definitely won’t be buying this one. I have no clue what I’m going to be wearing on my nails for the holidays. I scored a free bottle of Zoya Trixie during their flash promos this week so maybe I’ll have to try that out.

      Hey Camille!

Aww…must you single out bar glitter like that? It just wants to feel like a wanted member of the family! Hahaha! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Awesome news on the Zoya! ๐Ÿ™‚ Love how they have so many great promotions, but I wish they opened it up to Canadians. I’m sure I’d do a lot of damage to my wallet then…haha!

I haven’t decided exactly what I’ll be wearing on the holidays, but I’m hoping to get China Glaze Party Hearty on at least one nail. To me, it’s the perfect Christmas polish ever created. Last year, I didn’t get a chance to wear it, and I really missed it.

I know, I feel bad that I gotta hate on the bar glitter. It really pains me. Bar glitter is like regular glitter’s ugly step sister. And it really is a shame you have to miss out on the Zoya promos. I’ve been a bit too naughty snagging the great deals. I told my husband he can put them in my Christmas stocking. haha!

Out of all the nail-polish brands, it seems like Zoya is the most active with their promotions. Definitely if I lived in the US, I’d have lint in my pockets. But, who knows? One day, they may open it up to Canadians, haha, and then I’ll go berserk to make up for all those years I was deprived.

Haha, hopefully your husband has the good sense to listen to you. ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Hey Lizzy!

You know what? That’s the coolest description of bar glitter I’ve ever heard! Chromosomes! That’s so neat – I’m going to think of that the next time I wear bar glitter.

Such a sparkly polish! I don’t usually wear bar glitter polish because 1.) it’s glitter and hard to remove and 2.) I’m questioning the fact that some people think it makes their nail look hairy. Anyways, I was at the Upcoming Collections section of Polish Chest and I saw some amazing stuff from China Glaze! Here’s the link: http://polishchest.blogspot.ca/p/upcoming-collections.html and I’m just super excited for these new collections! Especially Hologlam, Tranzitions and Texture!

      Hey maddy!

This one’s actually a lot easier to remove than any other glitter I’ve tried. I think it’s because there’s a lot of clear polish as the base. With this polish combination, it came off in hardly any time. I didn’t even have to do the foil method! Shocking!

Yes, China Glaze is KILLING IT as usual! ๐Ÿ˜€

By the way, tomorrow I’ll be posting the China Glaze Tranzitions press release and promo pictures for a detailed look at each shade. ๐Ÿ™‚

Hehehhe, and I’d be your nail-polish mother any time you want. Instead of nagging you to make your bed or wash the dishes, I’ll nag you to do nail art and to always wear a shiny quick-drying top coat. Hahaha! ๐Ÿ˜‰

      Hey Charlotte!

Yes, I can see how the bar glitter reminds you of New Year celebrations! ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s a very glittery, festive polish.

Aww…thanks! Glad you like this one the most. Hit the Lights (the yellow) is still a favourite. Maybe it’s because I don’t have as many yellows as I do other shades…

If you ever want to see all the shades from the Selena Gomez Collection I’ve reviewed, you can check out this post: http://www.swatchandlearn.com/nicole-by-opi-selena-gomez-collection-press-release-actual-bottle-photos-quick-swatches/

That’s awesome! I’m so glad to hear that. Did you know you’re the VERY FIRST PERSON to ever mention that? All this time, I didn’t think anyone really found it helpful, but I included it just in case. Now that I know at least you find it useful, I’ll continue doing it. ๐Ÿ™‚

Haha, yeah, it does add a little extra work on my plate, but it’s worth it!

Hope that’s the case! ๐Ÿ™‚ As a blogger, sometimes you don’t know what people really like unless they communicate it somehow…or if you look at site analytics a lot. I’m glad that you let me know you use it. Haha, good to know that the extra effort isn’t being wasted!
