Nicole by OPI Love Song Swatches & Review

Nicole-by-OPI-Love-Song-Swatches-ReviewNicole by OPI Love Song from the Selena Gomez Collection coming out in January 2013 is a simple, pretty purple. But when I thought about its name (and of love in general), I began thinking about a lot more than just a pop song on the radio.

Love is probably the most overrated and simultaneously underrated thing in the world. It can make or break you and drive you crazy or ground you in reality. People die for it, but people feel alive because of it.

I’ve had my heart broken pretty badly many times when I was too quick to open up and trust people, but I’ve also done my share of breaking hearts. (No halo here, unless it’s from an old Hallowe’en costume!)

Through all my experiences, what I’ve realized is that unconditional love is the hardest gift to come by. So when you find people who accept you (but who still encourage you to constantly improve yourself), you’ve struck gold.

And on your quest for finding true love, I think you need to learn how to love yourself – your quirks, your flaws, and your strengths. Then, if you’re blessed to find that Special Somebody, you can bring something more interesting to the table and have your own identity instead of being just ‘half of a couple’.

What do you think?

Nicole by OPI Love Song Review

Love Song is a simple purple that’s very easy to sport. I’d describe it as a greyish purple, but it’s definitely more purple than grey.

It’s brighter and more saturated than a pastel, but it’s also not really a vibrant shade. Very lovely to wear!

When I looked at my photos on the computer, I saw some very fine silver micro-shimmer, so I whipped out the bottle and inspected it. The are some shimmery ‘veins’ that I noticed were very subtle.

However, on my nails, I thought it was just a plain creme finish. Indeed, it does look like a creme. Unless you realllly inspect your nails ridiculously up close, your manicure with this will look more like a soft creme.

Application & Formula

I had absolutely no issues with its formula. It was creamy and easy to apply. Plus you just need 2 coats to achieve full opacity.

  • Soft, easy-to-wear purple
  • Good formula is a cinch to apply

  • Not the most original shade (but not every nail polish has to be 100% unique. Pretty colours still have value)

Final Verdict: 8/10

Nicole by OPI Love Story is a beautiful purple that’s nice, but it’s nothing ‘out there’. If you don’t have a purple like this (WHHHAAAAT?), then try this one out. 🙂

Do you believe in love at first sight? How old were you when you first fell in love?

      Hey Icequeen81!

Aww…why do you think that? Maybe try a more pink-based lilac? I can’t pull those kind of lilacs off – the cooler-toned ones are easier for me to wear.

      Hey Martha S.!

Yes, it IS crazy…haha! Lilac polishes were some of the first colours I stocked up on when I first started to collect nail polish seriously.

I really loved what you wrote in the beginning; “Love is probably the most overrated and simultaneously underrated thing in the world.” That is so true. I remember that I’ve been in love being frustrated and I’ve felt the earth crushing down and now when I think about it is feels like; “what, how could I ever feel like that for him?”. I really gives a picture on how unimportant things can be and how important one thinks that it can be. I think that I maybe was more naive when I was younger, and now days I don’t react in the same way. I’m in a serious relationship since a year and I hope it will last for long. The difference from now and when I was younger is that I think that it’s a more mature love and maybe that’s a key for making it last, to actually take things for what they are.

About the polish, not such a unique color but I do like the bottles they come in. They are cute 🙂

      Hey Gelic’ nail art!

Thank you for reading what I wrote! 🙂

Break-ups are usually very difficult, especially when (at the time) you were head-over-heels in love. I’ve had experiences like the kind you mentioned where it felt like life after the break-up seemed impossible or just verrrrry difficult to wrap my head around. But, like with many things, time has a way of forcing us to push forward and grow stronger than we ever thought possible. 🙂

I also hope that your current relationship is the one. 😀

Haha, really? I always hear people complaining about the Nicole by OPI bottle shape, but you like it! That’s the first time I’ve ever read someone praising the bottle shape! WOW!

Finally! 😀 I’ve been looking forward to this one, and it’s a cute purple. I’m realizing more and more that I kinda like purples. Preferably with an edge, though 😉
I feel like a lot of the colours of this collection are channeling Barbie like crazy. If that’s a good or a bad thing, well, that’s personal 🙂

Nice one as always, Mary 🙂

      Hey Charlotte!

Haha, sorry for the wait! Yes, definitely a cute purple and easy to wear.

Actually, that’s a smart observation. Never thought about it before, but after you mention how the collection is channelling Barbie, I can totally see it! 🙂

P.S. Thanks for your encouragement! It helps to put more fuel in this little engine of mine. 😉

Haha, no worries. It’s here now – yay 🙂
I don’t think I’ll get it, but not because I dislike it, just because there are other colours that I want more.

You’re welcome 🙂 Motivation is so important, I believe it’s really important to remember encouraging people when you feel like they’re doing a good job. People tend to forget sometimes, maybe because everybody’s so busy?

Yes, I know what you mean! Even a simple ‘thank you’ can really be the motivation someone needs to push forward through a trying time or to continue doing something good. We all need that kind of support and not just brutal, negative critiques. Even when people are busy, I think we all need to make the time to encourage others.

        1. Mary Post author

Oh, okay. I get it. I think that a lot of people feel the same way. It’s easy to worry about getting hurt, especially if you’ve been hurt badly in the past. The next time around, it’s not as easy to open up. Then again, some people open up even more afterwards (too much) and then get exponentially hurt. (That has happened to me.) We learn from every mistake, though, so at least it’s not 100% negative.

Love is definitely confusing. Some people who act like they’re in love will still deny that they are, in fact, IN LOVE! Haha, I’ve always found that pretty funny. Actions speak louder than words, and some people don’t listen to their actions! 😛

          1. Charlotte

I’m such a sissy, but I’m working up some courage, you know? Haha, well, everybody has their weaknesses and being able to open up to romaaaaaantic lurrrve is definitely on my list. And there’s also a bunch of romantic stuff that’s just a bit too cliché/cheesy I think. But romance can also be so, so sweet when it’s sincere 🙂
I’m really sorry to hear you got hurt like that (why does this always happen to good people?!) but yeah – we just have to make the most of it and learn and grow through the mistakes. (Speaking of clichés ;))

Haha, yeah, I know! I think I’m more in that field than the one where people think they’re in love, but they’re actually just in love with being in love.

Haha, yes, there’s a LOT of love cliches. Sometimes I do like them even though they’re cheesy, but sometimes they really annoy me! (E.g. I like getting flowers on Valentine’s Day, and every time a guy has serenaded me, I’ve always swooned! Hehe, it helps that I’ve so far only been serenaded by actual musicians – they could play the guitar and sing very well!)

I guess love hurts just everyone, but it makes us stronger and helps to define what we need to be looking for in a future potential partner. We learn valuable lessons…like while it’s good to be trusting, you also can’t be TOO trusting because we aren’t living in a Care Bear world. There’s danger there, and often mean-spirited people prey upon trusting individuals.

I’ve found that some of the people who are the most eloquent and socially savvy have been the ones who have hurt me the most. Not sure if it’s because they’re very adept at manipulating people’s emotions…But now, I’m more drawn to people who are socially awkward. I’ve found them to be more honest about their feelings. Whether or not that’s the case, it’s just one of the many changes I’ve made in my life in the journey to finding Mr. Right. (Although, I’m also not actively looking. Building up your own individuality and feeling comfortable in your own skin first is the key, I believe. Then, while you become a better person, you’ll probably meet someone. And, even if you live the single life forever, that’s okay, too. There are many ways to have a satisfying life, and being half of a couple isn’t necessarily something that’s right for everyone. That’s what I’ve concluded over the years.)

Great color! The beginning of this post was AWESOME, like whoa. I do get crushes fairly quickly, and I once heard someone say “I fall in and out of love ten times a day” or something to that sort, and that is totally me. Like I can see someone, develop a crush after talking to them and mostly never go out of just flirting. But that’s just kind of how I am, I’m very flirtatious and love being single, but also in a relationship. I like flirting with different guys, but if I’m dating one, it’s all different. I think if you’re in a relationship, you have to be all in or it doesn’t work out. I totally believe in the loving yourself before you can love someone thing, it makes so much sense. And I also believe love or someone special comes right when you stop looking for it. Sorry I went off on a little rant there lol oops.

      Hey Brianna!

Thank you! I wasn’t sure if some readers would say that I was kind of veering off the topic of nail polish, but decided to post it anyway. A lot of times polishes (and their names) make me think about other things. And I enjoy rambling sometimes. 😉 Hehe!

I agree with you about being ‘all in’. Although some people say that open relationships are more fulfilling, I have yet to know of anyone who leads such a lifestyle and being truly happy with it.

  4. Sahra

Absolutely love it – I think muted purple’s are gorgeous. As for being in love – I definitely believe in love at first sight – in fact, the first moment I laid my eyes on my husband, I knew I was going to marry him – 10 months later, I did. I was 21 when we got married, and now coming up to 4 years down the track I can definitely say that my idea of love has changed, deepened and matured, just as our relationship has. I think love is able to mould around both parties to become something ultimately personal to the couple. <3

    1. Mary Post author

      Hey Sahra!

Your story of falling in love with your then-boyfriend-turned-husband is sooooo romantic! Thank you for sharing that with me (and my readers). It reinforces my belief in love at first sight. (I like believing in happy things like that.)

Actually, I have a little ‘story’ to share, too. One of my ex-boyfriends was completely speechless when he first met me. When we eventually started dating and going steady, he later revealed that he had that Love at First Sight experience (that he didn’t believe in before)! Maybe this is awful, but I didn’t have the same reaction to him, and after being with him for a little over 2 years, I dumped him because we weren’t right for each other. :S Although it’s a sad ending, the happy part is that love at first sight does exist. (Also, we’re still friends even though we’re not dating.) I think it’s romantic, and I wish that I could experience something so profound like that. It must feel amazing!

    1. Mary Post author

      Hey Marisa!

Yes, this is such a Marisa shade for sure! I’m sure it’ll look fantastic on you. You make a lot of pinks and purples look extra pretty. I’m not sure how you do it. I’ll see the exact same polish on someone else, and it’s nice, but then when I see it on you, it looks so much better. Where do you buy your special pixie dust that makes that happen? I need to know! Hahaha!

  5. Marta

LOVE this color. It is shades like this that – when I look at them- make me happy… and yet I don’t wear purples all that often.

I don’t know if I believe in LOVE at first sight, but I do believe in interest-at-first sight. I remember the first time I laid eyes on Peter, my husband. I was 15, it was in youth group. It sounds cheesy but I remember what he looked like, what he wore even, and the faces and surroundings around him were a bluur. It was months until we spoke and started a young-friendship, but later we both talked about the moment where everything slowed down for both of us 😀 odd right! So it must be true (at least in this case).
And you as a heartbreaker? I don’t see it 😉

    1. Mary Post author

      Hey Marta!

Aww…thanks for sharing that sweet story with me. It always makes me feel so happy when great people (like you and your husband) find the love of their life. And the fact that you met at such a young age makes it even more romantic! 😀

  6. Kay

Awesome swatches of this colour – I have a friend who ADORES Selena Gomez and purple so I may get this for her next birthday!

BTW, I really appreciated your “ramble” about love – I think the part about unconditional love from others and loving yourself is so true!

… Despite the fact that I haven’t been in a relationship before due to my educational settings, hahaha!

Anyway, before I “word vomit” again, I just wanted to say that I appreciate when you go off-tangent very much as it makes your blog more unique and interesting 🙂 Hope you have a great day!

    1. Mary Post author

      Hey Kay!

She’ll love this purple, and the application was great.

Aww…thanks! I like to ramble. Haha! I usually tie it in somehow, so it’s not completely random. Gotta maintain some sanity, right? 😉
