KleanColor Chunky Holo Purple Swatches & Review

KleanColor Chunky Holo Purple Swatches & ReviewA few weeks ago, I wore KleanColor Chunky Holo Purple 234 layered over OPI Can You Dig It?, and guess what? I forgot about the photos I took of it on my camera until now!

This combination was a winner for me, and I wore it for 7 days straight. I wanted to wear it longer, but with so many untried colours in my collection, I start feeling guilty if I wear the same manicure for more than a week. Does anyone else feel the same way?

You may remember that I previously reviewed some other colours in the KleanColor Chunky Holo Collection and said that Bluebell was incredible. It still is, but if you’re a fan of purple and you love a strong holographic-glitter polish, Chunky Holo Purple will steal your heart!

KleanColor Chunky Holo Purple Review

Colour

KC 234 Chunky Holo Purple is a rainbow in a bottle. The base is a translucent purple and there’s chunky square-ish glitter suspended in it that’s extremely holographic. When you move your fingers, you see red, orange, yellow, and green! It looks as if you got into a fight with a pixie and she hit you with her dust!

By itself, it’s very sheer and not too interesting. This polish is like a magic potion – layer it over the right polish and you’ve just created a love spell! (But if you want to see it solo, check out the KleanColor Chunky Holo Purple swatches I did in my Haul of Shame post, where I swatched every colour in the collection by itself.)

This colour was tricky to photograph. Usually photographing a polish in sunlight brings out a lot of a colour’s personality, but this time, it actually made KC Chunky Holo Purple less vivacious! With flash, it became flat.

The only way to capture some of its beauty was to snap it in natural light, but my camera doesn’t produce the best quality in such settings. Add on top the fact that sparkly polishes make my camera a total spaz and that this polish had so many colours in different angles!

If you like what you see in my above photos, let me tell you something: it’s waaaay better in person! I wasn’t able to accurately capture how stunning it truly is!

Finish & Grittiness

The holographic nature really sparkles when layered.

This has large pieces of glitter, so it doesn’t feel as smooth as a creme nail polish would. However, given how big the glitter is, I was surprised that it didn’t feel sharp or jagged. It’s smoother than you’d think.

Application & Formula

The formula is Big-3-Free (i.e. it doesn’t contain Formaldehyde, Toluene, or DBP), and it has a slightly thick consistency. I’m fairly sure that this is so the polish coats the glitter to tone down the grittiness. Despite this, it’s easy to apply and control.

Smell

If this is the first time you’ve ever tried a KleanColor polish, you’ll most certainly be taken aback by the incredibly nasty and strong fumes that are 100000 times strong than that of OPI, Nubar, China Glaze, Orly, and many other popular polish brands.

It hits you like you’re the victim in a Whack-a-Mole carnival game!

But, since I tend to hold my breath a lot when I’m painting and this isn’t my first KleanColor experience, I knew what I was getting into.

Layering

To achieve the manicure in my photos, the below polishes are what I layered: OPI Can You Dig It? and KleanColor Chunky Holo Purple – 2 coats of each.

KleanColor Chunky Holo Purple Layered Over OPI Can You Dig It

Pros

  • Stunning strong holographic glitter polish (a rainbow in a bottle!)
  • Ideal for layering over another colour
  • Dries fairly smooth for a glitter polish
  • No Formaldehyde, Toluene, or DBP
  • Inexpensive
Cons

  • The worst polish I’ve ever smelled
  • Can be tough for non-Americans to get hold of if you don’t want to buy online

Final Verdict: 9.5/10

I docked points for the fumes smelling really badly, but it gets a higher score than KleanColor Chunky Holo Bluebell because when given the choice between purple or blue, I almost always go with purple.

Have you tried this polish layered over something other than purple or black? Which is your favourite from the Chunky Holo Collection?

      Hey Elle!

Hehehe, yes, this is the best colour in the Chunky Holo Collection that I’ve tried for sure! I even bought a few back-ups (since the price wasn’t too hard on my wallet). One bottle will probably go in an upcoming Swatch And Learn giveaway. Not sure when yet, but I think this would be a good prize. I like to give people things that I would want to get myself. 🙂

I love a good holo polish! Those natural light photos are ridiculously amazing. I probably stared at them for a good 5 minutes. Awesome photos! This is definitely going in the “must have” list.

I’m with you with wearing a mani for more than a week. It doesn’t sit well with me either when there are so much more polish that also need some love. 😉

      Hey Carmela!

Thank you so much – hehe, I took hundred of photos to try and find ones that best captured the nature of this polish. Natural light was the only real way I seemed to be able to show you all the different colours. And in person, this polish looks even better. Haha, just beware the fumes. 😛

Back in the day, I used to wear the same manicure for 7-14 days straight (without chipping). I’ve been amazed at the quality of some inexpensive polishes and how they can really hold up over an extensive period of time.

These days, I paint my nails more often, which is good because I can enjoy more colours I own, but it also sucks because for those 3- or 4-day manicures, I can’t comment on the polish’s longevity and share that information with you all. And I know that lots of people like a polish to last for more than 4 days, if possible, since not everyone 1) wants to paint their nails so often and smell the fumes and 2) has a crazy collection to burn through. 😛

If you didn’t mention that you struggled with capturing this colour I would have never known! Again, I was mesmerized by each photo!!!! looooovely shade on you! I don’t blame you for wearing it for seven days!
Because of this whole blog thing 😉 to too try to share my time equally between colours… and at the same time, being a blogger… I want to show my own personality, so some colours will be shown over and over (same with stamps) because they are my favourites 😉 I wouldn’t mind seeing this beauty on you again 😉

      Hey Marta!

Thank you so much! I’m pretty sure my neighbours think I’m a special case because they sometimes catch me taking photos of my hands. And I tend to take hundreds of photos just so that a few turn out okay and so I can pick and choose.

Your personality definitely comes through on your blog, and your photographs are crystal clear – I’m always impressed by the quality. Actually, you’ve inspired me to try harder to photograph my nails! When I look at your photos, every nail is very sharp. I want to practice more to get to your level. 🙂

Eventually I’ll want to upgrade to a new camera, though. Mine is probably 5 years old or more. The new cameras on the market really make me drool. The next camera I get will be a huge upgrade, so I need to save up. Ideally, I’d want to invest in a digital SLR.

        Awww 🙂 Thanks Mary 🙂
I happen to mooch the camera off of Peter 😉 He has gotten into photography and we actually own a few cameras and a few more lenses. I use his “oldest” camera… that he retired from his photography (lol)… it is a Nikon Digital SLR D70… I solely attribute the photo quality to it 😉
I take photos of my hand too… with three little ones “mommying” at me… so I’m sure the neighbours have formed their opinion of me also 😀
But… what am I doing chatting boring cameras when there is a lovely KleanColor I could be staring at 😉

So pretty!! I really need a hologlitter in my collection but the smell hmmm… 🙁 Speaking of glitter I’m curious have you tried Dear Laura PA nailpolishes? They have a lot of different glitters which look pretty interesting (haven’t tried them myself though)

And I totally know what you mean about changing nailpolish! I’ve been just painting over my old mani’s to extend the time before I have to use remover aha

      Hey Lulu!

Yeah, the smell is stronger than any other polish…ICK! Just try holding your breath while you’re painting and make sure the room you’re working in is ventilated.

No, I’ve never tried any Dear Laura PA nail polishes before. Actually, I don’t think I’ve heard of them even! Hmm…something new to look into.

      Hey PreciousPearl!

Out of all the ones in the Chunky Holo Collection, this one is the must-have for me especially if you’re a purple polish fan! 😀

I had been contemplating whether to get this or not for a few days but you’ve totally won me over with your swatches! It looks like a holo that i will loooove which is why i placed a order in already 😀 Just have to wait a while to get it… but I’m already excited!
You should swatch it over different colours too one day since I’ve only seen it over purple and black. I actually want to try this over a bright fuchsia pink… for some reason I think it would make a really good match.

      Hey Ivy!

Thank you so much for liking my swatches of it that much. This polish is one of the gems in my collection…although the fumes make it also the stinkiest ones, too…hehe! 😛 Seriously, though, this is really gorgeous – you won’t want to take it off!

I’m so excited that you decided to get this one! 🙂 Please let me know how you like it when you wear it. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.

I’ll definitely wear this one again layered over another colour. For the first time trying it, I wanted to see all of its rainbow capabilities, so that’s why I stuck with the purple. But it’s going to be fun trying this over another colour or even a non-creme polish. 🙂

I don’t know why the rest of my comment didn’t show up 🙁
      but here it is:

yes! the most I’ve gone is ten days because I was trying a matte polish. I really only paint my left hand though. I prefer shorter nails, but nail swatches just look better on longer ones, so my left hand stays pretty and useless.

Oh…that’s too bad! I know that’s happened to a couple of people before. Really don’t know why it happens. 🙁 But thank you for trying to post the rest of your comment again. 🙂

Wow, 10 days for a matte polish is a really long time. Most people say it chips within a few days. I have some matte polishes, but haven’t gotten around to wearing them yet.

Hehe, you paint just one hand? I’m not sure I’d be able to leave the house with just one hand painted. Well, I mean I’m sure I could, but I don’t think I’d want to…haha, I’d be self-conscious. So more power to you!

      Hey Kee!

I know, right? American’s have the easiest access to all the amazing polishes. Wish that us Canadians could get a break more often.

Have you looked on eBay? Back when I wrote that post, I saw that there’s an eBay seller who ships these to Canada, although she lives in the States, so duty and higher shipping rates will apply. 🙁

Maybe in the future I’ll have a giveaway and one of the prizes will be a KleanColor Chunky Holo polish. Hmm…

This is my favorite and I NEED to buy black and candy! I layered it over a dark purple and over a bright purple and it looks amazing. I can’t wait to try it over black!

I just got my hands on this on Monday and was reading your post to see what you had to say before trying it. I’ll let you know how it goes. However, I do own 3 other Kleancolors and none of them smell as vile as the Chunky Holo Purple. I think maybe it’s an ingredient specific to the holos that makes it smell so horrific.
