Get ready to dip your nails into the hottest summer colours because the Essie Summer 2016 Collection officially launches on May 17th across beauty destinations in Canada!
The first thing that stood out to me is that there’s a black nail polish in a summer collection. You know how happy that makes me? I’ve always been a strong believer that you should enjoy any colour you want regardless of what is ‘in season’ or expected.
I’ve been known to sport black manicures in sweltering August and blinding neons during February’s frost. That’s why seeing a dark colour in the Essie Summer 2016 Collection made me smile – it encourages going against the grain, which can oftentimes be quite refreshing!
The formulas on all of these were excellent because I only needed two coats to get full coverage.
It must be noted that Coconut Cove (white) pleasantly surprised me because it wasn’t a streaky, sheer mess, which is typical of many white nail polishes. It covered very well!
Another honourable mention goes out to Tribal Text-styles (black) because the formula was extremely pigmented and smooth with the ideal consistency.
Loot the Booty (sapphire blue) and Viva Antigua! (turquoise) are both gorgeous with a delicate sparkle, and after Tribal Text-styles, they’re my favourites in the collection.
When I swatched Berried Treasures (berry), I wondered, “Is it an Essie Brides No Grooms dupe?” You may remember it from the Bridal 2015 Collection. Since some of you may also be curious, check out the bottom of this post because I did comparison swatches that answer the question.
Additionally, this post includes the official Essie Summer 2016 Collection press release and Rebecca Minkoff’s editor’s note (she’s Essie’s Global Colour Director), in case you want to know the inspiration behind the colour selection.
P.S. Yes, I’m a green nail-polish lover and maybe sometimes I’m immature, but when I read the name Berried Treasures, it made me think of buried treasure…as in the green kind. Am I the only one?
Edit (April 12, 2016): One of my readers asked me on social media if there’d be a mini set for this collection. I sent over an e-mail to find out. Turns out that, YES, there will be a mini set, and it will include all the shades! If I receive more information, I’ll add it here.
Edit (April 15, 2016): Someone on Instagram wondered how they compared, so I added a comparison swatch of Essie Hiking Heels with Essie Color Binge in this post and on my social media.
There are six shades in the Essie Summer 2016 Collection:
- Tribal Text-styles
- Loot the Booty
- Viva Antigua!
- Hiking Heels
- Berried Treasures
- Coconut Cove

Essie Berried Treasures vs. Essie Brides No Grooms
Before I tell you which is which, take a look at the photo below, and try to guess!
While they are very similar, it turns out that they are not dupes of each other. However, for me, they’re so close, so I think you don’t necessarily need both…unless you’re a collector.

Essie Editor’s Note: Rebecca Minkoff
I spend a lot of time on the road. Partly because I have to – it’s a necessity to find inspiration – and partly because I love to. The more I travel, the more I appreciate real adventure. Tourism shouldn’t necessarily be about visiting the most famous monuments (although, that can be exhilarating). For me, a really amazing experience is usually defined by connecting to the people and place in a way that feels personal, and different. Something off the beaten track is often more memorable than the most popular attraction.
That’s why I love Antigua. By car, bicycle or on foot, it’s an absolute pleasure to wander in such a beautiful city. What makes Antigua so special is the people; they’re so warm and kind, you begin to feel like a local. Going to the market to buy some fresh fruit becomes an epic discovery of culture, history and of course, gorgeous handmade fabrics and tribal text-styles. Their vivid, saturated colours reflecting the local flora can be seen everywhere.
Natural wonders are everywhere – lush mountains, rainforests, waterfalls. Each bend in the road presents a spectacular new view. Start the day with a beautiful breakfast of local fruit and nothing to do except go where the mood takes you. There’s no need for a plan – leave the guidebook behind and drift. Adventure will find you. Just go.
Let’s get lost,

Were you also pleasantly surprised to see a black nail polish in a summer collection? Which are your favourite shades in the Essie Summer 2016 Collection?
So with retro revival, spring, resort, summer and tjr upcoming bridal, oil slick and shimmer brights, not to mention stuff coming in the last 6 months of the year, I may as well get my pay directly sent to Essie… The turquoise of these looks super gorgeous. How close is the black to frockn roll?
Hehehehehe, I know what you mean! Those nail companies – they sure know how to reel us in!
Compared to Frock ‘n Roll, I feel like this black has more visible sparkle! I would choose this over Frock ‘n Roll for sure.
I love the blue, turquiose and black! I don’t have many Essies as they are expensive here in the UK and fairly ‘tame’ but these three I want to have! I like the idea of a black in a summer collection as I wear most colours throughout the year – apart from very Christmassy one.
YAY for another person who loves wearing black nail polish for summer! 🙂 I feel like we are rare birds of a feather! *High-five*
Pretty colors! I’m liking this collection, especially the blues. I am curious about the white. Is it my imagination or is it opaque in 2 coats? Thanks as always for sharing with us!
I was just thinking the same thing. If that is really a 2 coat white it is going on my MUST HAVE list!!!
Yes, it covered very well with just two coats. I was surprised because, even though I don’t usually wear white nail polishes as full manicures much, this one seemed to give me great opacity with just two coats! It’s one of the best white nail polishes I’ve ever tried!
I got great coverage with the white in just two coats that I didn’t even feel the need to apply a third coat! That is extremely rare for me, when it comes to white nail polishes. I was so impressed with the pigmentation on that one!
I was pleasantly surprised by the spring collection and I’m really liking the look of the new summer collection too (those blues are so pretty!) Essie is really stepping it up!
I agree with you in that Essie seems to be getting better and better! They’re definitely the nail company to watch!
Nice, I can’t wait for this collection to come out in the US
Thanks for stopping by the blog and sharing my enthusiasm over these polishes! 🙂
Nice. I want to get my hands on this nail polish summer collection..
Which colours interest you the most?
These are all amazing! I love every one of them and will probably be purchasing at least half the collection. The black and teal are incredible. Well done on this collection Essie! Great photos as always 🙂

Hey LemonBerry Blog!
Aww, thank you so much! Your encouragement means so much, and it reminds me how fortunate I am to be part of the beauty community that is so supportive! 🙂
You will really enjoy this collection. It’s one of my favourite Essie collections!
I love them all except the coconut white….I’m not sure I have any outfit that can make the white work. Any suggestions?
oh my nail polish recently posted: Sally Hansen Insta-Dri Nail Polish Review- Does It Live Up To Its Name?
Hey oh my nail polish!
I rarely wear a full white manicure, either, so I understand where you’re coming from.
When I do wear white on my nails, I usually am also wear white clothes or pastels. I tend to wear white nail polish mostly in nail art.
Does the faint colour shift on the blue translate on the nail? Doesn’t matter if it doesn’t, I love it anyway!
How close is the green to Garden Variety? 🙂
No, I wouldn’t say that Loot the Booty shifts on the nails at all.
Loot the Booty is much more of a blue than Garden Variety. If you compare it to Viva Antigua!, Garden Variety is darker and a creme. Hope that helps!
This is a gorgeous collection, I thought Hiking Heels would be my favorite but it’s Loot the Booty! And when I think of buried treasure I think pirates, which makes me think of gold dubloons or silver. 🙂
That one’s so pretty! (I’ve reviewed Loot the Booty in-depth in today’s blog post, so you might want to check it out.)
Hehe, Loot the Booty also makes me think of pirates! ARRR! 😉
Any idea if these will be released as gel polishes? I would love viva Antigua, coconut cove and tribal text-styles in my gel collection
The press release in this post about the Summer 2016 Collection is all the information I have, so it doesn’t look like it’ll come out in the gel formula.
I also checked another press release I have (for the upcoming Essie Gel Couture line, which I’ll be sharing on the blog soon). Hmm, those are all new shades!
