eos Honeysuckle Honeydew Lip Balm Review & Pictures

eos Honeysuckle Honeydew Lip Balm Review & PicturesI’ve been curious about the eos lip balms (also called Evolution of Smooth lip balms) for a long time because, well, the packaging is such a fun novelty, and they come in lots of different flavours.

It’s also cool how they’re 100% natural and 95% organic. According to the package, they’ve been certified organic by Oregon Tilth.

Other cool things about this egg-shaped Evolution of Smooth lip balm? It’s not tested on animals and it’s gluten-free.

It’s supposed to keep your lips soft, smooth, and moist. Well, I waited to try out this product a few times when my lips felt dry.

Did it pass with flying colours, or did it fail to impress because of performance anxiety? There’s only one way to find out – let’s get cracking!

eos Honeysuckle Honeydew Lip Balm Review

Flavour & Scent

I’m extremely picky about flavours and scents, especially when it’s in a product that’s so close to my nose and that I will be potentially smelling all day long. If it’s really strong, it could give me a headache, or if it’s a scent that I just don’t like, it could be a deal breaker.

The Honeysuckle Honeydew Lip Balm by eos scent and flavour was really mild and inoffensive. It smells faintly of a juicy honeydew – very fresh, but subtle. I enjoyed this scent a lot because I don’t have any other lip products that smell like honeydew, let alone any melons.

Now, I’m not usually a fan of melon scents or flavours in lip balms because often, they smell and taste really synthetic. This honeydew scent, however, definitely has a natural flavour and scent. And that’s good, especially since this product is advertised as being 100% natural!

When I’m wearing lip balm, I don’t lick my lips, but I did with this one just to test if it would taste okay. It’s actually alright! Again, very mild.

Efficacy

Now, you all know that my favourite lip balm is the Jack Black Intense Therapy SPF 25 Lip Balm because it’s super moisturizing and really is heavy-duty. I’m still using that, but for the purpose of this review, I wanted to give the eos lip balm a true test. I went without my dear Jack Black for several days and let my lips get slightly on the drier side.

(It was hard to do this because I’ve spoiled myself into always having overly conditioned lips, but it really is the only way to test this product without the residual effects of Jack Black.)

It does keep your lips soft and delicately hydrated. I would recommend this lip balm if you would like an everyday light conditioning balm for normal lips. But if you’re trying to treat winter-chapped kind of lips, I don’t think this is appropriate. This balm is more for maintaining healthy lips.

I would say that the moisturizing effect lasts for about 30 minutes on me. When it wears off, my lips still feel comfortable and don’t get dry like they do with some other drugstore lip balms I’ve tried. Because of this, I believe that this balm actually does moisturize my lips instead of just coating them.

Consistency

The Evolution of Smooth lip balm is thin, however, it doesn’t make your lips feel slick like if you used Vaseline (or ate greasy chicken!). I generally don’t like lip products that have that Vaseline feeling because it feels oily to me.

What I appreciated was that this lip balm doesn’t add a super-glossy finish and it’s not sticky at all. Sure, I like glossy lips, but sometimes you just want your lips to have that natural look. This gives you that. And because of it, I think a guy could easily use this product without feeling like he’s using a girlie lip gloss.

When I first glided this lip balm on and felt how thin it was, I thought that there was no way it would moisturize. I was really surprised! It’s not a deep treatment for your lips by any means, but I experienced noticeable improvement in the way my lips felt and it didn’t seem to dry my lips out.

Packaging

One of the first things that anyone will notice about the Evolution of Smooth lip balm is its shape. It comes in adorable packaging that’s reminiscent of an Easter egg.

I liked the minty-green colour, which is specially for the Honeysuckle Honeydew flavour. I also liked how it has a flat bottom (haha, the one time a flat bottom is a good thing, right? :P), so you can put it on a desk without it rolling around.

There’s anย asymmetrical indent along the middle for your thumb so that you can get a better grip. Also, while the plastic packaging is smooth, it’s not slippery. It’s somewhat soft and makes it easier for you to hang onto.

(Hehe, but knowing me and my clumsiness sometimes, I can imagine me opening this up and accidentally dropping it on the floor and crying about it like some kid who dropped a scoop of ice cream from their cone. Guess I’ll have to be extra careful with my precious little egg!)

You twist to unscrew the cap, and when you re-screw it, the cap snaps when it’s closed.

The product itself looks like the yolk of an egg in shape. It’s domed and very big – obviously much larger than your typical stick lip balm.

If you’re like me and (unfortunately) carry around some crap in your purse, you’ll appreciate how the shape of this lip balm is very distinctive, which makes it easier to find at the bottom of your purse when you’re hunting for it in a dark movie theatre. Also, if someone gets on your nerves, you could throw it at their head. (I’m kidding! Fine print: Mary from Swatch And Learn is not liable for any lawsuits caused from following such action. :P)

How to Use

Since the product was so big, I was curious as to how to apply it. The ‘yolk’ is so big that you can just pucker up your lips and apply the balm onto your top and bottom lips simultaneously. I tried that, but I felt really silly doing that, so I just put it on each lip separately.

It feels really interesting gliding it on…almost like you’re wiping on a really soft ball onto your lips. It’s soothing and fun, but I think it’s going to be messy or trickier when I’ve used up more of the product and the dome gets flattened.

With this product, don’t expect to apply it with precision. I think the advantages of this are the ease of use and how quick it is to apply.

When you put the cap back on, be careful to line it up first before screwing it on so you don’t knick the product. If you don’t care, then ignore me. Hehe, but I really get bummed out when I knick a lip product, so that’s why I’m telling you this…(You may be crazy like me.)

Ingredients

I appreciate how it is 100% natural and 95% organic. There are so many chemicals in lots of things I use everyday (e.g. nail polish, hair conditioners, etc.), so I feel good about using something that contains things like vitamin E, shea butter, jojoba oil, and extracts.

It doesn’t contain gluten. That’s not a big deal to me, but I know that some people are allergic to that ingredient, so it’s worth noting. It also doesn’t contain petrolatum or parabens.

One more thing is that it doesn’t contain any sunscreen, so be aware of that if this is your main daytime lip balm.

Animal-Friendliness

You’ll be pleased to know that the eos lip balm isn’t tested on animals.

Price

It costs around $3-something CAD at Rexall when I saw it just a couple of weeks ago. I think this is a decent price for what you get. It’s not too expensive, but not the cheapest.

Pros

  • Fun packaging
  • Shape makes it easy to find quickly in your purse
  • Great mild scent & flavour
  • Provides light everyday moisturization
  • 100% natural & 95% organic
  • Certified organic by Oregon Tilth
  • Gluten-free
  • Not tested on animals
  • Has thumb indentation for easier grip
  • Affordable
  • Not sticky
Cons

  • Not available at too many brick & mortar stores in Canada (as far as I know)
  • Product may be messy or tricky to apply when you’ve used more of it & the balm dome gets flattened
  • Offers light moisturization & won’t heal very chapped lips
  • Product can get knicked when screwing on the cap
  • Doesn’t contain SPF

Final Verdict: 7/10

The eos Honeysuckle Honeydew Lip Balm actually lives up to the hype! I think this is a fun little lip balm to have handy for when you’re craving just a bit of flavour, scent, and light hydration without the shine. (I can see this as being a good lip primer for lipstick.)

It’s nowhere near taking the place in my heart for my beloved Jack Black lip balms, but this is nice to use in between or when you’re indoors and don’t need any SPF.

Have you tried the eos lip balms? If so, which is your favourite flavour? Do you think the packaging is cute or ugly?

I actually love melon milk, melon candy, and fresh melon, so I think I’ll love this lipbalm. And from your review, it does sound like a really nice moisturizing lipbalm. Yet another thing to add to my shopping list for when I visit the western hemisphere again! =)

The packaging reminds me of Tony Moly’s Egg Pore Line! Unfortunately, I can’t use it since every other thing I’ve tried from Tony Moly made me break out–horribly. It looks reallyt cute though–would make a really nice gift: (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-1GkZgViYL98/TeMnENFmVNI/AAAAAAAAANQ/MpMHLipzNIY/s1600/tonymoly_egg.JPG)

      Hey Anthea!

Yes, it’s a good everyday light-moisturizing balm that doesn’t leave behind a lot of shine. And it’s great knowing that it’s 100% natural.

Hahahaha! Oh my gosh – those Tony Moly stuff look so cute and really like eggs!

I’ve been wanting to pick one up for the longest time just because I’ve been so curious about the packaging. Thanks for the detailed review! I think it would be interesting to see how it applies once you’ve made a dent in the product, seeing as it’s spherical. I’m not a fan of pots where you dip your finger into it (eww, germs!) so I’ve been wondering how this one holds up to the hype with the unique packaging and actual moisturizing power.

Oh and FYI, I’ve also seen this at a Shoppers Drug Mart. ๐Ÿ™‚

      Hey Carmela!

Oh, my Shoppers Drug Mart sucks – they still don’t carry it. My Rexall offers 2 flavours (this and Summer Fruit). Does your Shoppers carry more flavours?

I’ll try to remember to take a photo and add a new section in my review after I’ve worn this lip balm down flat.

The moisturizing power is light, but it’s there. ๐Ÿ™‚

I think mine only had those two. Summer fruit is the red one, right?

I’m more than a little excited for winter (I know, strange)! I have ulterior motives though: been wanting to test out your beloved Jack Black lip balm and the best test is against my perennially chapped lips, esp during winter. ๐Ÿ˜€

Yep, Summer Fruit is the reddish one. I almost reached for that one, but…well, the power of green compels me!

Jack Black’s balms are AWESOME for all your worst lip nightmares. I’m very confident that you’ll be as ecstatic about it as I am.

I love this stuff! I found mine at shoppers about a month ago, and I actually picked up a three pack while I was in the us. I think it works amazingly well. I have never been a chapstick person, but my lips were so dry I had to try something. I picked up an eos and a rose salve- I only use the eos. That said i got a gloss in my glymm box by principessa, I think? And so far I really like that as well!

Hmm…I’ve never seen them at my Shoppers, or I would’ve picked some up a long time ago! I’ll have to look again, but…sigh…my Shoppers is hit or miss with new collections, cool stuff, etc. ๐Ÿ˜›

Oh, I’m curious about the rose salve, too! That’s something I’ll need to look into.

I was on the hunt for this when I was in Florida in March, but couldn’t find it anywhere. Was very excited to find it at Pharma Plus last month. I bought the mint one and I love it. It does seem to last longer on my lips than it did for you. I’d say at least a couple of hours. Love how the mint feels on my lips.

Oh, I’ve never seen the mint one in person. Luck you! My store just has this one and Summer Fruit. I love the way minty balms feel, too – tingly on your lips and they’re just so refreshing. ๐Ÿ™‚

100% natural is fantastic for a lip product. Almost every lip gloss/balm I’ve checked has an insane amount of ingredients for “plumping”, “skin conditioning”, “smoothing” or whatever vague classification under ewg.org. Seeing a list with natural fruit oils as the top ingredients is a wonderful change.

I just can’t get over it’s odd packaging. This little round thing looks cute but I could already imagine problems with it (and you confirmed my predictions after reading ur review):
    – people don’t want to look funny and end up applying each lip separately which defeats the purpose of the egg like shape.
    – because of above, the shape is much too large for smaller lips
    – You can easily dent the balm while you’re unscrewing or capping.
    – once the roundness of the dome is gone, you must use your fingers which isn’t very hygienic. (especially cold/flu season! yikes!)…unless you feel comfortable applying a 2 inch diamater lip balm onto your lips lol.

On a more random note, you should do more lip product reviews in the following months! The cold weather is coming our way and it might be really useful for some. I am definitely in search for a good lip balm. I find that most tend to try out my lips even more.

      Hey Vivian!

I totally vouch for the Jack Black lip balms for severely chapped lips. That can heal lips even in the dead of winter! It comes in a nice squeeze tube, so it’s hygienic, and you get a nice glossy shine plus SPF 25. ๐Ÿ™‚ And the great thing about that lip balm is that your lips feel super conditioned after using it – never dry!

This eos lip balm is muchhhh lighter in terms of hydration compared to the Jack Black one. Different purposes. ๐Ÿ™‚

I’ll see what I can do about more lip-product reviews, but once I find lip balms that work, I tend to be really loyal to them. I’ve had bad luck with nearly all drugstore lip balms, so this eos one was a real shocker!

how weird, you’re the second person who has recommended me that today! The cashier at sephora also gave me a heads up and included a lip balm sample. It’s a sign from the lip gods! haha, I’ll be sure to check it out. It’ll be great for my BF too since they don’t come in girly tubes.

When you try it, I bet you’ll be hooked, too, because it’s so effective!

(I reviewed the mint one: http://www.swatchandlearn.com/jack-black-intense-therapy-lip-balm-spf-25-natural-mint-review-pictures/, but I’ve also tried the lemon one, too…The lemon and chamomile version is delicious-smelling and very relaxing. I may review it later because I love it, too. I feel like the mint one’s good for day….hehe, it wakes me up! Then the lemon and chamomile is relaxing, so it’s great for wearing when you’re sleeping.)

eos lip balms have been super popular with my friends, but I never got around to trying them (though the super cute packaging almost sucked me in a few times :P). I don’t think I’ll get this lip balm because my lips need the real-deal thick lip balm; thanks for the great review!! ๐Ÿ˜€

      Hey Ruthe!

Oh yeah, if you need thick lip balm, this surely isn’t the one for you. I’d suggest Jack Black – it heals ANY and EVERY chapped lip issue you can think of. But this one’s nice for just in between and when you don’t need SPF.

I have tried it too. The product itself seems good, but I just can not embrace the shape. I think I like my product a little more protected from the elements when I take the lid off until I can use it.

I understand how you feel. When you unscrew the lid, the balm is like an egg yolk and is so vulnerable to the elements. I always have to take extra care to make sure I don’t accidentally drop it…hehe! But the shape is what drew me to the product the most. Then it was the formula and the flavour that made me want to continue using it. ๐Ÿ™‚

I had the EOS but gave it away to a friend who fell in love with it (a guy, nonetheless). I have been meaning to pick up another. I will tell you this one was great for work, except it fit awkwardly in my pocket haha! It takes a long time for this sucker to wear down, but it actually gets easier to apply when it has a bit of a flat top. That’s when it feels more like a regular balm from a tube. They also sell EOS in “click sticks,” but I liked the idea of the orb more hehe! I loved the honeydew, bu I want to try some of the others too. Maybe lemon drop? mmm they also have some seasonal flavors that come out near wintertime, so I am starting to look now (I have heard Target i the spot…do you have Target in CA?).

I can see a lot of guys liking the eos lip balms because they don’t leave your lips glossy, and the packaging isn’t overly girly.

Hehe, but, yes, it would stick out in your pocket. I wonder how guys would carry them around without a purse…

I finally put a small dent in my Honeysuckle Honeydew one! ๐Ÿ˜€ It’s not completely flat yet…but…I’m going to miss the rounded balm when it does get really flat.

No, we don’t have a Target here in Canada, unfortunately.

I love EOS lip balms! They’re the best. I prefer them over Jack Black because I don’t like the taste, heaviness, or stickiness it adds to your lips. If my lips are really chapped, I just put a LOT of EOS on. It does just fine. Also I like that I just forget its on after a while. They also taste super yummy!
