Merry Christmas from Swatch And Learn!

Hey everyone!

I hope that you all have a very Merry Christmas and are spending it with loved ones!

Merry Christmas 2013

Since I’ll no doubt be very busy today and the next little while, please note that I may be slower to reply to messages than usual.

Also, since I have limited access to the internet while spending time with my mom for Christmas, you can expect my next blog post sometime the following week. (I’ll be showing you one of the shades from the OPI Gwen Stefani Collection in-depth.) I may poke around a bit on social media, though.

Thanks for understanding!

May your Christmas be filled with lots of happiness, love, and humour!

I’ll be in touch again soon.

Love,
Mary

Blog News: My Prom Manicure Is Featured on PromCanada.com

SwatchAndlearn Prom Nail Art on Prom Canada smallerRemember not long ago, I participated in a nail-art challenge to create a prom-inspired manicure for a new magazine called Prom Canada? (I came up with this manicure incorporating freehand and nail-stamping designs.)

Well, they’ve launched a new website (PromCanada.com), and they published an article featuring my nail art as well as Dee Thompsons’ (the contest winner’s) and other voters’ favourites!

Blog News: I Attended the Contessa 2013 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards

Contessa 2013If you followed me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, you already know that on Sunday November 10, I attended the Contessa 2013 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards.

It was held in downtown Toronto at the Westin Harbour Castle.

I’m not a hairstylist, but one of the amazing PR firms I collaborate with (Langton Communications) invited me to the event because they thought I’d enjoy it – they were so right! 🙂

The Contessa Awards are pretty much like the Academy Awards, except for the hair industry. They were founded in 1988 and are Canada’s longest-running and most prestigious awards honouring excellence and creativity in salon professionals. (Top manufacturers and distributors of professional beauty products support Contessa. They have many sponsors including CND, JOICO, L’Oreal Professional, Marvel Beauty Schools, Paul Mitchell, Redken 5th Avenue NYC, and many more!)

According to the press release PR provided, the submissions “are evaluated on originality, creativity, fashion appeal, model suitability and technical execution”. They also take into consideration the quality of the photography, makeup, and clothing.

They announced the nominees for each category, and then the winner headed to the podium and gave their acceptance speech. (There were some that were so raw and emotional – you could truly see just how much it meant to them and how much hard work they put in to deserve their place in the spotlight. It was inspiring!)

A lot goes into the cuts, colours, and vision for the entire image, which includes makeup and nails. (This post is very picture-heavy, but stick around because I’ll show you some of the winners’ photo submissions. One winner is actually a nail artist, which I thought was really cool to see. I’ll show you the manicures she came up with.)

Even though I brought my DSLR camera, I rarely busted it out. So all the photos you see in this post that were taken by me were with my smartphone. The quality isn’t the best, but I also included some Instagram videos, so you could get a glimpse into what it was like to actually be there. (A pictures says a thousand words, but a video says even more!)

The entire night was like nothing I had experienced before. It was so great to see everyone dressed up and to be among creative artists who challenged the status quo and who weren’t afraid of taking risks.

I’m in desperate need of a haircut, and there was so much inspiration at the Contessa Awards!

What an honour and a privilege it was to be invited! I am so very grateful to the entire Langton Communications team, especially Donna-Lee, Michelle, and Maxine, all of who I saw at the event.

Blog News: Swatch And Learn on BundleMonster.com

A little while back, Bundle Monster reached out to me and asked if I’d like to be featured on their public-relations page. Of course I wanted to because they’re a company I fully support and have really enjoyed collaborating with – what an honour! And they also promised to give full credit for the photo used at the bottom of the page.

They asked a few other bloggers, and chose some.

Well, I received the news just last week that they selected mine (the Chalkboard Nail Art I’ve showed you on here before) to showcase along with some other talented women! You can just imagine how loud I squealed when I read the e-mail!

Below is a screenshot, but you can click on the images below, which are linked to Bundle Monster’s PR page.

Blog News: I Attended a Nicole by OPI Carrie Underwood Media Luncheon with Suzi Weiss-Fischmann (Plus Surprise Giveaway!)

Nicole by OPI Carrie Underwood Collection Media LuncheonBlogging continues to be a very rewarding project for me, and there have been moments when my eyes have watered up, thinking about the kind and talented people I’ve gotten to know and all the doors that have opened as a result of sticking to this since 2010.

On Tuesday October 1st, I attended a media luncheon where Suzi Weiss-Fischmann (the Executive Vice-President and Artistic Director of OPI) unveiled the new Nicole by OPI Carrie Underwood Collection that’s hitting stores in January 2014!

I posted some sneak peeks during the event on my Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts.

If you’ve followed my blog for some time, you’ll remember that I met Suzi at 2 other events for a blogger dinner showcasing the Nicole by OPI Selena Gomez Collection (the 1st time) and for a media luncheon unveiling the OPI San Francisco Collection (the 2nd time).

For a nailphile to have met Suzi once alone is already a dream come true, so for me to have 3 opportunities seems so unreal! Each time, it’s inspiring!

Keep reading this blog post as I take you along the journey with me and show you photos.

Plus, you’ll want to read until the very end because I have a worldwide giveaway for a special nail polish autographed by Suzi! You won’t want to miss out!

Edit: Congratulations to Suzanne! She won my giveaway for the OPI Pure 18K White Gold & Silver Top Coat signed by Suzi! (She has 48 hours to reply to my e-mail to claim her prize.) Thanks to everyone for participating. Please stay tuned for my next giveaway.

Blog News: My Interview Was Featured in Your Nails Magazine!

Your Nails Magazine Swatch And LearnToday I have some really exciting news to share! I’ve known about it since the end of July, but I’ve kept it hush-hush. Why? Not because I was asked to, but because it’s just more fun this way to announce it now!

My interview was featured in Your Nails Magazine! (And I’m representing Canada – wooooo hoooo!)

Back in the summer, Karolina Boczek (the Managing Director of Your Nails Magazine, a magazine geared toward nail professionals) reached out to me. She told me that her magazine runs a regular article in every issue that asks nail technicians and people who are passionate about nails to answer a few questions.

She was wondering if I’d be interested in a feature. Hells to the yeah, as they say!

I sent short answers to her questions, some of my manicure photos, and a headshot of myself as requested.

Then, it was just a waiting game – a very exciting one!

You have no idea how many times I went home and checked my mail to see if the issue arrived! (This is my very first magazine feature, so it’s a huge deal to me! Plus the fact that I’m not a nail technician or a nail professional in any way makes this a special honour.)

The September issue I’m featured in is No. 8 (4/2013) ISSN 2009-4752, and you can find me on page 51, in the centre column and under the section called “What’s Hot & What’s Not Around the World”.

Unfortunately, I don’t own a scanner, so I had to photograph the page with my camera’s flash. (I have a few friends who have scanners, so hopefully I’ll be able to scan the page nicely and add it here in the near future.)

When you get to page 51, I’m featured along 2 others, Ami Harris (who has had 15 months of professional training) and Ria Lopez (who’s been doing nails professionally for 5 years). I’m honoured to be featured alongside them!

In this post, I share the full article with you, as well as a closer look at the pictures.
