China Glaze Elfin’ Around Swatches & Review

China Glaze Elfin' Around Swatches & ReviewNow that December is here, I’m getting more into the festive spirit with red nail polishes.

Well, I’ve worn several already, but I decided to blog about them this month, so it’s more timely. You can expect more holiday shades coming soon!

Are you getting your home all ready for the holidays? Or are you planning to pack your bags and head somewhere to visit family and friends?

I’ll be visiting my mom during the Christmas week, and I’ve taken time off work so that we can do more things during the day.

Since I usually just visit her once a week, it’s nice that I’ll be able to spend a longer time and consecutive days with her.

In today’s post, I’m showcasing China Glaze Elfin’ Around from the Happy HoliGlaze Collection, which is an interesting twist on the typical Christmas reds on the market during this time of year. It’s actually a reddish orange, but it can read red when you look at it solo and in some lighting conditions. (When I review traditional reds later this week, you’ll really be able to see the difference!)

Zoya Dream Boxes & Incredible Black Friday Deal

Zoya Dream Box Cheers to AllZoya is one of my favourite brands of nail polish because they always offer such fashion-forward and daring colours plus finishes that take my breath away.

So when they sent me a press release about the Zoya Dream Boxes and also a special Black Friday Deal, I had to share it with you.

Zoya doesn’t ship to Canada, but even if I can’t partake in this special deal, it doesn’t mean that I won’t pass it along to my American readers! (I will admit that being a Canadian nailphile right now is making me shed lacquer tears because the Black Friday offer is insane, and I wish I could participate.)

If you want to get right to the Black Friday Deal, scroll to the bottom of this post for the coupon code that will get you the above Zoya 12-piece set free (yes, FREE!) plus more goodies (valued at over $118 US) when you spend at least $72 US from November 28 (6 pm EST) to November 29 (11:59 pm EST) only on Zoya.com!

China Glaze This Is Tree-mendous Swatches & Review

China Glaze This Is Tree-mendous Swatches & ReviewBeing a green lover, I was very excited to try out China Glaze This Is Tree-mendous from the Happy HoliGlaze Collection. The fact that it was also full of fine glitter was like the icing on the cake.

When I wore this, it was almost like I had green tinsel on my nails because no matter where I was, I could see them twinkle.

This is a very festive look, but I’d wear it again any time of year, not just around the holidays.

If it were a darker green, I think I’d fall more in love with it, but it’s still pretty, and I had lots of fun wearing it!

OPI Underneath the Mistletoe Swatches & Review

OPI Underneath the Mistletoe Swatches & ReviewOPI Underneath the Mistletoe from the Mariah Carey Holiday Collection was the colour I was the most excited to try from the set. It didn’t disappoint!

There’s a depth to this polish that doesn’t quite translate as well in photographs, but it’s clearly evident in real life.

The red base is translucent, which allows the glitter to peek through in a way that’s like looking into water and seeing something shiny sparkling at you.

If there’s just one nail polish from the Mariah Carey Holiday Collection, I highly recommend you get OPI Underneath the Mistletoe!

You know what? I’ve never kissed anyone under the mistletoe, mainly because nobody I know actually follows the tradition of hanging it.

When I was in elementary school, one of my friends’ parents used to put mistletoe in their hallway, and when they invited me over for a party, I tried to convince my friend to invite the cute guy in class. (I had not-so-secret plans to get him to stand under the mistletoe while I was there. Hehe, but she was too shy to invite him, so my kiss at that party never happened.)

I think that hanging mistletoe is such a romantic tradition, don’t you?

Blog News: I Attended the Contessa 2013 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards

Contessa 2013If you followed me on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook, you already know that on Sunday November 10, I attended the Contessa 2013 Canadian Hairstylist of the Year Awards.

It was held in downtown Toronto at the Westin Harbour Castle.

I’m not a hairstylist, but one of the amazing PR firms I collaborate with (Langton Communications) invited me to the event because they thought I’d enjoy it – they were so right! 🙂

The Contessa Awards are pretty much like the Academy Awards, except for the hair industry. They were founded in 1988 and are Canada’s longest-running and most prestigious awards honouring excellence and creativity in salon professionals. (Top manufacturers and distributors of professional beauty products support Contessa. They have many sponsors including CND, JOICO, L’Oreal Professional, Marvel Beauty Schools, Paul Mitchell, Redken 5th Avenue NYC, and many more!)

According to the press release PR provided, the submissions “are evaluated on originality, creativity, fashion appeal, model suitability and technical execution”. They also take into consideration the quality of the photography, makeup, and clothing.

They announced the nominees for each category, and then the winner headed to the podium and gave their acceptance speech. (There were some that were so raw and emotional – you could truly see just how much it meant to them and how much hard work they put in to deserve their place in the spotlight. It was inspiring!)

A lot goes into the cuts, colours, and vision for the entire image, which includes makeup and nails. (This post is very picture-heavy, but stick around because I’ll show you some of the winners’ photo submissions. One winner is actually a nail artist, which I thought was really cool to see. I’ll show you the manicures she came up with.)

Even though I brought my DSLR camera, I rarely busted it out. So all the photos you see in this post that were taken by me were with my smartphone. The quality isn’t the best, but I also included some Instagram videos, so you could get a glimpse into what it was like to actually be there. (A pictures says a thousand words, but a video says even more!)

The entire night was like nothing I had experienced before. It was so great to see everyone dressed up and to be among creative artists who challenged the status quo and who weren’t afraid of taking risks.

I’m in desperate need of a haircut, and there was so much inspiration at the Contessa Awards!

What an honour and a privilege it was to be invited! I am so very grateful to the entire Langton Communications team, especially Donna-Lee, Michelle, and Maxine, all of who I saw at the event.

beautyblender Review & Pictures (Plus blendercleanser Review & Pictures!)

Beauty Blender Review Beauty Blender Cleanser ReviewLast year when I attended IMATS, I found a good deal on a beautyblender set that included both the beautyblender and the blendercleanser for $30 CAD flat (no tax).

Normally, the beautyblender alone costs $26 CAD plus tax, so I gave into the temptation and bought it. (This was waaay before I heard about inexpensive dupes of this makeup sponge.)

Lots of makeup artists and beauty enthusiasts recommend the beautyblender, and it has won Allure’s Best of Beauty Award around 5 times!

I had been curious to try it for a long time with liquid foundation, even though you can use it with blush, bronzer, and pressed powder.

For powdered products, I like using a brush, so for this review, I just tested it on liquids like foundations, concealers, and BB creams.

So, did it live up to the hype for me?
