Zoya Toni Swatches & Review

Zoya-Toni-Swatches-ReviewIf you were a kid growing up on the 1980s like me, you’ll probably remember Saturday morning cartoons and how awesome they were.

You’ll also probably remember The California Raisins commercial and the brief “After These Messages” snippets.

Oh, those were the days! *She says while her rocking chair squeaks*

Zoya Toni from the NYFW 2012 Collection reminds me of The California Raisins. No, it doesn’t sing or dance…but maybe if I keep looking at it late at night, it will start to. 😉

(And don’t tell any of the Raisins about this polish because they’ll get scared. After all, the bottle is basically their Raisin ‘blood’.)

Zoya Toni Review

Colour

Toni by Zoya is very close to being the colour of a raisin. To me, it’s a deep, dark purple with heavy brown undertones. Sometimes, it looks like a reddish brown.

This is a colour that I hardly ever buy only because other colours jump into my shopping bag. (Raisin-type polishes are lazy. They see my shopping bag, but they just veg out on the store couch and stuff their face with chips.) 😉

So since wearing this shade is a new experience for me, I was surprised that I actually liked it. Sure, it’s not as exciting as Zoya FeiFei, but there’s a time and a place for Toni.

This is a great fall shade that’s rich. I was reading my Instyle Makeover magazine the other day, and I saw how one of the colour trends includes wine shades. This is right on cue.

I think that because it’s vampy without being one of those near-blacks, it might be a great option for those who want to try something dark without going gothic all the way. And the traditional, seasonal colours for this time of year will mesh very well with Toni.

An interesting thing to note is that in some dim, artificial light, this shade can look more brown with a tinge of raisin. However, in most lighting, you can clearly see the raisin.

Finish

Toni by Zoya is a creme polish, so it’s very clean and simple. It’s easy to remove, and it would be wonderful to use as a base colour for nail art.

Application & Formula

The first coat was pigmented, but it didn’t provide full opacity. You’ll need a second coat, and if you tend to use medium coats like me, two coats is all you’ll need for complete coverage.

The formula is easy to control, and the finish is very smooth and shiny.

Pros

  • Raisin hue that can look a little brown in certain lighting
  • Easy-to-control, smooth formula
  • Dark polish that doesn’t look gothic
Cons

  • Dark polish that doesn’t look gothic (Hehe, it’s a Pro & a Con!)
  • Not the craziest polish in the Helmer (This is a safe choice as far as vampy polishes go.)

Final Verdict: 7.5/10

After this experience, I’m curious to look into more raisin-coloured nail polishes. I went into this thinking that I would strongly dislike this on my nails. What a surprise…hehe, I swatched and learned. 😉

Do you like raisin-colour polishes? Do you remember The California Raisins? Did you also used to watch Saturday morning cartoons as a kid?

      Hey Gelic’ nail art!

Zoya is killin’ it with their fall shades – so much diversity. And this one was a total surprise for me!

You know, I like that colour. It wouldn’t be one that I would pick up at the store without having seen your swatches.
And I remember Saturday morning cartoons, though I was born in ’88 so I don’t remember much of the California Raisins (but I do know who they are!). Cartoons these days are terrible, I can’t stand being in the room when someone is watching them, unless they are the classics (Bugs Bunny, Care Bears, etc.). I don’t know what I’m going to do when I have kids…. The hubby’s gonna have to supervise while I’m painting my nails or something 😉

      Hey Erica!

I was realllly young when the California Raisins were on, but they played it so much, so I guess it just stuck. Hehe, and my older brother and I would sometimes sing along with it (that is, when we weren’t fighting). 😛

Yes, the classics like Bugs Bunny and the Care Bears were the best! And do you remember watching Inspector Gadget and Astro Boy? Those were more on the weekday mornings, though. Funny how I was able to get up so early as a kid. But as an adult, I’m SO not a morning person.

I was generally not a fan of raisin shades of nail polish until I saw this one and now I am. It is gorgeous and rich and vibrant in its own way.

I used to love the California Raisins commercials! I still love some of the Saturday morning cartoons, but I’m very nostalgic about Bugs Bunny — especially Yosemite Sam.

      Hey Gwen!

Looks like Toni is slowly but surely converting a bunch of us and convincing us to not overlook shades like this. 😉 What’s interesting is that sometimes it looks more brownish or even red-wine-ish. I think if it didn’t ‘change’ shades much, it could be very boring.

Hahaha, on my bedroom door when I was a baby, I had a Yosemite Sam decal. I also had tons of other characters from the Bugs Bunny show on my door. But the Yosemite Sam one was the lowest on the door and just at my height. Apparently I went through a ‘picking’ phase, so unfortunately, I peeled off half of Yosemite Sam from my door. Haha, well, half is still there. The next time I visit my mom, I’m going to take a look at it. Funny how when you see something very often, you stop ‘seeing’ it and become desensitized. I’ll need to revel in that nostalgia again. 🙂 Thanks for indirectly reminding me! 🙂

This is a really pretty one – and like others have said, I find raisin shades hard to wear – usually the red/brown/plum looks too something that is not right on me…but this one has more purple in it and I think I could wear it. Did not grow up in the 80’s but do remember the dancing/singing raisin commercials…thinking it was from the CA Raisin Association

      Hey beachgal!

It really depends on the lighting, but sometimes it looks more brown or red-wine-toned. Hopefully it works for you, though. I’ve seen some other pictures of it online, and it didn’t look nearly as purple. Not sure why because when I wore it, the purple came out a bit more in certain lighting.

Hehe, it’s funny how the California Raisins had at least one of their own CDs! I don’t have it, but I wonder how many kids from that time had parents who bought it for them. 🙂

I just got this shade when Zoya had their BOGO last week. It’s quite beautiful and looks lovely on you! I can’t wait to wear it, myself.

      Hey Sandy!

Man, Zoya is amazing with their special promotions, aren’t they? If I lived in the US, haha, I’d be placing Zoya orders a little too frequently!

Aww…sorry to hear that you can’t wear Toni. Have you tried it, or can you tell just by looking at the colour? Is it the undertone that makes you steer clear of it?

      Hey Randi!

Oh, I’m not sure. The only Chanel nail polish I own is Peridot. That would be great if this one was very similar, especially since Toni is much more affordable!

If any of my readers know, please let Randi know by replying to the comment. 🙂
