Last week, I gave you a glimpse into the OPI Hawaii Collection Media Launch I attended with my recap post.
Today, I’m going to share with you an in-depth look at OPI Hello Hawaii Ya?, which is a dusty purple I love from that collection! (It’s one of my top picks.)
(If you want to see quick swatches and bottle shots of the entire OPI Hawaii Collection, be sure to check out my Quick Look post.)
OPI Hello Hawaii Ya? is what I’d call an editorial version of purple because it’s slightly smoked out and isn’t like a typical one with an Easter vibe.
I also like this shade because of the name. It’s not the wittiest from OPI, but it reminds me of one of my friends. He always greets me with a big smile and says, “Hi! How are ya?” So when I saw this polish, I thought of him. And no, hehe, he’s not Hawaiian.

OPI Hello Hawaii Ya? Review
Colour
Before green nail polish waltzed into my life, my first love back in 2008 was purple lacquer! At that time, I had more purples than any other colour – probably three times as many.
Although now greens make my heart race, purple is a close second, and Hello Hawaii Ya? by OPI has a soft spot in this nailphile’s heart.
Instead of being bright like the kind of purple I associate with Easter eggs, OPI Hello Hawaii Ya? has a dusty quality. When I say “dusty”, I mean that in a good way. It’s muted, yet somehow it still packs a punch. It’s like a kitten with a roar.
Although this polish is not at all a dupe for OPI Parlez-vous OPI?, it brought back nostalgia for me when I first began seriously collection nail polish in 2008 (before I started this blog). That purple had a grey undertone that I fell in love with, and it was part of the La Collection de France that was the very first OPI collection responsible for turning me into a nail junkie.
Bold and bright shades are fun to sport, but dusty tones like OPI Hello Hawaii Ya? are a cool twist on colours we already love. They add a bit of edginess, and for me, a warm cup of nostalgia.
Finish
Creamy and smooth, Hello Hawaii Ya? by OPI is simple yet striking. There are no crazy effects. It’s a calm colour – as calm as a purple can be. And because it has a creme finish, it’s easy to remove. You won’t have to scrub your poor fingers red and raw.
Application & Formula
Applying this baby was a breeze. The formula was of average consistency – i.e. the “Goldilocks” formula, which is not too thin and not too thick. I could control the polish easily with my brush, and it didn’t run the risk of flooding my cuticles.
With just two coats, I got opaque coverage, so I didn’t feel the need to apply a third.

Final Verdict: 9.5/10
If you’re a purple fan, you’ll love this. If you enjoy wearing dusty colours, get this. And if you were like me and fell in love with the OPI La Collection de France back in 2008, maybe you’ll also feel nostalgic, too.
OPI Hello Hawaii Ya? is one of my top picks from the OPI Hawaii Collection. It has the excellent formula that OPI is known for, and I can imagine that the colour would be flattering on many different skin tones!
Does OPI Hello Hawaii Ya? make you feel nostalgic? What other colours in the OPI Hawaii Collection are you most looking forward to? Do you remember the OPI La Collection de France back in 2008?
Yes! Beautiful.
Hey Robbie!
This would look absolutely breathtaking on you!
Thank u!!! I will be rocking it for sure.
Can’t wait to see!
This is a very pretty color. I’m not much of a “purple person” but I can see myself getting this one. Just curious I wonder how it looks compared to OPI’s How do you Lilac it? or OPI’s A Grape Fit. Thanks as always for sharing can’t wait to see the others in this collection.
Hey Melissa!
Compared to the two purples you mentioned, Hello Hawaii Ya? has much more of a dustier appearance with a slightly grey undertone. The ones you mentioned are more vibrant purples.
Stay tuned all this week. I’ll be showcasing more shades from the OPI Hawaii Collection – ENJOY! 🙂
Okay. I love anything grey even if it’s just an undertone. LOL I can’t wait to see the others in the collection.
Then you’ll really love this! 🙂
Normally I don’t like greyed out colours. because I have the feeling my skin looks ill when I wear them. But this colour just speaks to me. I think it will join my stash at one point.
Thank you for showing it, dan’t wait to see the next reviews to the Hawaii Collection 🙂
Have a nice day
Hey Akima!
I think that you’ll be able to pull this one off because it’s not overly grey-toned. It’s still a lively purple, but it only has a slight dusty feel to it. I hope that you enjoy it! 🙂 Please let me know what you think, if you decide to get your hands on it.
More in-depth reviews on the OPI Hawaii Collection colours are coming all this week! 🙂
This is a gorgeous color on you! I’m very much looking forward to picking this one up. 🙂

Hey Linda!
After being thrown into winter, a pretty spring shade like this is just what we need!
I can’t wait for the Hawaii collection to hit the stores… I think I want all of them! 🙂
(alright, not all of them… I’ll leave the yellowy-gold-glitter one for someone else… I can share, see?)

Hey Joyce!
There are so many great colours, and especially now, I’m looking forward to the spring. Enough of this winter!
Wow, I like this one more than I thought I would. While I don’t have to stick to “work-appropriate” shades, I feel like this could fly under the radar due to that dustiness you mentioned. I thought of Done Out In Deco, another dusty OPI purple, which is much lighter. Hmmm, I didn’t think I’d be picking this one up but I think your swatches have changed my mind! I like how elegant it looks.
Hey Maureen!
It’s a really pretty purple, and the dustiness is what makes it different than a lot of the brighter purples on the market. I think you’ll really enjoy this one! 🙂 Let me know what you think after you’ve worn it! 🙂
I like Very much this mail polish and the color!
Hey Ilaria!
Glad you like it! It’s really an easy colour to wear, and I enjoyed it!

Hey Icequeen81!
So happy to hear that! 🙂
Hi there, I was wondering how Hello Hawaii Ya compares to Essie Merino Cool, (if you have that one). I think the pics of Hello Hawaii Ya are gorgeous but I don’t want to get it (for cost savings reasons) if it’s too close to the Essie.
Hey Clarabelle!
OPI Hello Hawaii Ya? is more purple and less grey than Essie Merino Cool. Compared to each other, Essie Merino Cool has a much stronger grey/taupe undertone. They’re very different, so I think you can totally justify owning both. Hope that helps!
Oh me, oh my… is this polish perfection? I love OPI – the quality formula, the perfect-results-every-time brush, the iconic bottle shape – and I find dusty shades like this flatter my skin tone, and have such an elegant, year-round, all-occasions look… and my favourite colour? Purple?! Give that girl a free manicure! (lol!)
Ohhh… … I think I’m in love… Tx
Hey TishK!
Dusty shades are so gorgeous! I can never get tired of them, especially when they’re a dusty purple or a dusty blue!
