Black nail polish – I know, I know. Yawn, right? Agreed. What gets me excited about e.l.f. Essentials Nail Polish Black is actually the value. I really wasn’t expecting much from it, which is why it’s been sitting in my nail polish drawer for a while now.
But after wearing the fairytale colors of the Milani holo collection, I just feel like sporting something harsh and dark, yet still pretty. And that’s just exactly what I get from elf Essentials Nail Polish in black!

elf Black Nail Polish Review
I am in a semi-complete disbelief after trying the elf Black Nail Polish. It actually gets checkmarks all across the board. When I got this nail lacquer, I wasn’t looking for super quality. It was more as a base to use for some pretty top coats. But I’m actually excited to wear it on its own!
Let me praise the color first. elf Essential Nail Polish Black isn’t a smoky shade or a dark gray. It is BLACK. Like menacing jet black. I never thought I would wear black nail polish, but I’m actually digging it.
I didn’t apply a top coat in the pictures because I plan on testing out a sheer color on top later on, but as you can see, it has a natural shine to it.
And the formula is sooooo much better than expected. It’s more on the thick side, but there is absolutely no issue with the consistency. Applying it is really a cinch; I’m not sure if I should credit this to the formula or the “aerodynamic bristle design” (from the site). elf Black Nail Polish evens itself out on the nails, so you don’t have to worry much about streaks… which I find show more on high-shine cream colors.
It dries quite speedily, but it’s not lightning quick. I accidentally bumped my finger after a couple minutes of putting on e.l.f. Black Nail Polish, and I basically wiped off the color. I would estimate the setting time to be around 7 minutes, which isn’t too shabby.
Another thing that surprised me is the opacity of it. One coat nearly satisfied me, but I think because this is a black nail polish, any sheer spots are more apparent. I put on two coats for good measure.

Final Verdict: 9.7/10
I’m doomed! I think I’ll have to go order some more nail polishes from the elf website to see if the other shades are just as good. They seem to be consistently adding more colors. Oh! And I almost forgot to mention that I really like the bottle, too. It’s not your run-of-the-mill round bottle. Very cute.
