Smorgasbord Sundays: In The Next Karate Kid, Mr. Miyagi Said, “Time to Put Your Lights Out!”

Here’s a photo I took of myself a few years ago turning off the lights.

These days, I resort to using traditional things like switches. I know, boooorrrrring! 😛

Turn Off the Lights

I’m more a fan of the first and second Karate Kid movies, but I still get a kick out The Next Karate Kid because it’s so cheesy.

I was a fan of Mr. Miyagi because he was humble, could stay calm, definitely kicked ass, and still had a sense of humour.

Can’t believe that the actor who played him (Noriyuki “Pat” Morita) passed away in 2005.

When I was a little kid seeing Karate Kid for the first time, I didn’t have a crush on Daniel LaRusso like most girls probably did. I actually had a crush on Johnny Lawrence, the blond bad boy from the Cobra Kai dojo. He was such a jerk with a bratty voice, and I loved him for it. Go figure…

“Sweep the leg!” – What a classic line.

Which was your favourite Karate Kid movie? Which character did you have a crush on?

I think I liked The Next Karate Kid best just because it was a kick-ass girl protagonist (and the first of the series I saw). 😀

      Hey Carmela!

Yes, Hilary Swank kicked butt. And it was really refreshing to see a woman in the lead role instead of a guy, which is so typical.

Hehe, do you remember the ‘bad boys’ who wore those blue jeans and tight black t-shirts? Haha, it didn’t look intimidating at all! 😛

Mary, “Switches” are SO over 😉 I prefer your squishing technique! I loved the Karate Kid when I was younger…too funny that you liked the “bad” boy….did this carry over into your adult life? hahah I watched the “New” Karate Kid with my boys recently and while it was cute, I still felt like it was blasphemous to be watching a remake of a classic!

      Hey Maribeth!

Haha, it takes many years to perfect this squishing technique. An amateur could easily burn their fingers. Okay, maybe not. 😛

Hmm…good question! Yes, I like bad boys. 😉 I love how they’re adventurous and are confident with themselves. But I also like good guys because they’re reliable and honest.

I’ve never seen the new Karate Kid movie. From the preview, I just knew I couldn’t get down with it because the “Mr. Miyogi-esque” character was played by Jackie Chan, and I’m not a fan of his.
