Smorgasbord Sundays: Some Things About Me You Probably Didn’t Know

Mary Swatch And LearnLearning more about the person behind a blog is always really interesting to me.

It’s the blogs with a personal element that keep me coming back for more. It’s what reminds me that there’s a human behind the content, and that the content isn’t just churned out by an opinion-free computer.

For this Smorgasbord Sundays post, I decided to share a few random things about myself that you probably didn’t know because I thought it might be fun.

I encourage you to leave a comment and let me know some random things about you, too!

Here are some random things about me that you probably didn’t know:

  • I have size-5 feet.
  • I was a vegetarian for about 4 or 5 years.
  • 90% of the time, I’m wearing black socks.
  • I have an irrational fear of little people. (I have nothing against them, and I’ve never had any bad experience with them, but whenever I’m in the same vicinity as them, my heart races and I get very nervous. Weird, right? It’s also funny because it’s not like I’m a really tall or big person. I’m quite small/petite, myself.)
  • I used to compete in cross-country & track-and-field events. (I made it to the semi-finals for cross-country a couple of times. So, if any monsters out there are reading this, you should probably chase somebody else.) πŸ˜‰
  • When someone has a great personality, they start to even physically look more attractive to me.
  • I used to follow baseball games regularly when I was in the 3rd grade.
  • A few years ago, I used to follow basketball games regularly.
  • I nearly always fall asleep if I watch a soccer match on TV…unless David Beckham’s playing. πŸ˜‰ (Hmm…wonder why that is…haha!) Also, the only reason why I stay awake while watching a live soccer match is because I fear being hit by the ball. Haha, I’m serious about that!
  • I think that basketball & soccer players are the most physically attractive athletes.
  • For less than a year, I used to hit the gym and work out for an hour every single day (not to get fit, but because I was bored and wanted something to do! Haha & then one day I skipped going & I never went back again.)
  • I don’t have a ‘type’ that I’m attracted to when it comes to men. I’ve been known to like all sorts of guys: big biceps, scrawny, much-older, bald, hairy, gothic, blue-collar workers, white-collar workers, etc.
  • I love doing handstands in the swimming pool.
  • All the swimsuits I’ve ever owned have always had crazy prints, rainbow colours, ruffles, leopard prints, or even all of the above at once!
  • I’m a Pisces.
  • My favourite things to wear are sweater dresses with knee-high boots.
  • I turned down a marriage proposal when I was a teenager & I don’t regret my decision.
  • I used to take gymnastic, ballet & tap-dance lessons.
  • I learned to ride a bike in just a few minutes. After learning, I never rode a bike again.
  • The majority of my friends are dudes, but I’m not a tomboy.
  • I think that Shannen Doherty (who played Brenda Walsh on 90210) has the most attractive female voice I’ve ever heard.
  • I used to bite my fingernails in elementary school. (Then one day I looked at my fingers & thought they looked gross & raggedy. After that, I made the decision to stop.)
  • I love scrambling around to take photos of the sunrise & sunset. Here’s one I took recently:

Sunrise Sunset

  • I have pink, striped fur & have been known to meow when my owner hasn’t gotten out of bed yet to feed me. Haha! πŸ˜‰

Today, I’ll be heading over to Sally Beauty Supply to renew my membership. They sent me a coupon to get a free nail polish if I renew! Haha, that helped to close the deal.

Also, they have the best acetone nail-polish remover that I’ve ever tried. I just finished my big bottle and need to get a replacement.

After that, I’ll be visiting my mom and spending the day at her place. πŸ™‚ During that time, I’ll also get to see her cat, Pingu. (He’s the cat in the photo on the blog’s sidebar…wearing a top hat and monocle.)

Hope that you all have a lovely Sunday!

Wow, that’s pretty cool! What’s the name of it? I’d love to check it out.

And good for you for speaking out about it to help other people become more aware of it.

    Hi Mary,
Happy Sunday, It’s so much easier to talk to someone that has a great personality. Before I started my real nail polish collecting, I was (and still am), into collecting drinkin glasses and pens. Every now and then if I see a new glass or pen I will buy it, even tho I don’t really need it. I love dogs. I love other people’s cats, I don’t like the litter box, that’s why I don’t own a cat. I love to cook and I’m a very picky eater. I have two daughters. I can’t go more than 3 days without changing my nail color. And I have a routine with my nail polish: Every Friday I remove the polish from my finger and toe nails, file and push back my cuticles. Soak my feet, the paint my toe nails. On my fingers I use 2 coats of Nail Envey Original, then 1 coat of OPI Natural Nail Strengthener. Then on Saturday I paint my finger nails. Then see how long it takes me before I change the color. Thank you for sharing some personal stuff with your reader’s. Sounds like you have a great Sunday planned, enjoy. :~)

      Hey Melissa!

Happy Sunday to you, too! πŸ™‚

How many drinking glasses and pens do you own? Hehe, when I was in elementary school, I used to collect interesting erasers (e.g. rainbows, soccer balls, flowers, etc.)

Hahaha, yeah, the litter box is nasty, so I don’t blame you for not wanting to clean it. πŸ˜›

Jealous about your coupon! LOL. I almost exclusively buy polish at Sally’s (as in I rarely buy anything else unless it’s nail related) and my renewal coupon was for something from their hair care line! I’ll still take it, but I like yours better! πŸ˜‰

      Hey Kayla!

Gotta love these little extras that Sally’s throws in sometimes. πŸ™‚

Aww…but they were all out of the nail-polish remover I liked. I’ll have to go back again. In the meantime, I had to buy some crappy drugstore remover. πŸ™ After trying the Beauty Secrets one, this drugstore stuff is terrible! I forgot how bad it was…haha! The woman at Sally’s said that they’re backordered on it and don’t know when it’ll come in because it’s stuck at customs. I couldn’t believe that they were even out of the 1 gallon bottle! :O (Yes, I was so desperate, I was considering buying a gallon of it if I had to.)

Thanks for sharing more about yourself! It’s fun learning more about the person behind the blog :). I like doing handstands in the pool as well–I was so proud of myself when I figured out how to do it. I can’t even do so much as a cartwheel on dry ground, though.

If most of your friends are guys, what do they think about your interest in nail polish? Haha πŸ™‚

      Hey Jessica!

Glad you enjoyed it! πŸ™‚ And YAY for another handstand-er in the pool. πŸ˜‰ I rarely see anyone do that, and it’s so much fun!

My guy friends know that I’m obsessed (haha!), but I think they find it amusing because they do egg me on and ask a lot of questions about colours and applications. They also know to compliment me on my nails. πŸ˜‰

Well I learned that despite your fear of little people you can outrun all of them, not only because of their short legs, but because of your running background πŸ˜› Also that it doesn’t take much for you to make a decision since all the ones you mentioned seemed to be abrupt (no more gym, nail biting, bike riding).
One more thing…my size 8.5 feet can squash your tiny size fivers πŸ˜€

      Hey Frosso!

You’re so lucky! It must be cool to have 8.5-sized feet. The way I see it, if shoes don’t fit, you can go up or down a size…or two. But, for me, I can’t go up or down a size. Size 6 (other than sneakers) are always too big, and, well, I can’t afford the high-end designer shoes that come in size 4. On the bright side: at least I can find SOME shoes that fit. πŸ™‚ Better than walking around barefoot.

    Hi Mary,

I’ve been reading your blog for a while, but I’ve never commented before. This time, I just have to! My dad named me Brenda because of Shannen Doherty’s character on 90210. The fact that you mentioned something about her on this post kind of feels like… deja vu?

      Hey Brenda!

How cool that you were named after the best character on that show! πŸ™‚

I’m curious now – Do you like her character, too? Have you watched the episodes of the original show?

So cool to learn more about you Mary!! Do you find it difficult to find cute shoes in your size. I wear an 8, which is average, so they’re usually gone. Especially if there is a sale.

The fear of little people, it’s a little weird. But who am I to judge right? ;0)

I ran track in high school!! But I quit after two years. Sounds like you were way better than I was, lol! I also followed basketball in high school. Mostly because I had a crush on Michael Jordan, heehee ;0).

Whoa Pisces!!! (high five). How did I miss that? You must message me the exact date if you don’t want to share it here. Mine is March 5th.

So cool that you took dance lessons as a kid. I always wanted to, but my parents made me learn piano instead. Now I live vicariously through my daughter ;0).

Hope you enjoyed the time with your mom.

      Hey MariJo!

You’re soooo lucky you wear size 8 shoes! You can go up or down a size to get the right fit. Haha, yeah, it’s tough finding nice shoes in size 5. A lot of times, stores only carry shoes in size 6 and up. Or if they have size 5, they use it as the floor model! It’s very hard finding even standard dress shoes that fit my feet because not only are they size 5, but my feet are quite narrow. A lot of shoes these days seem to be made for those with wider feet, it seems. But…I keep searching and hoping!

Hahaha, I have no idea where my fear of little people began or why!

Oh, who didn’t have a crush on Michael Jordan? πŸ˜‰ He was so hot (and talented)!

*High-five* for Pisces! Sure, I can message you the exact date. Hehe, yeah, I kept it quiet about my birthday. Didn’t blog about it or anything. But I do celebrate it with family and friends.

Haha, I also took piano lessons! Did you go for any of the standardized testing with the conservatory of music or did you learn for fun? First I learned how to play pieces for fun, but eventually I took the formal examinations.

Thanks! πŸ™‚ I did have a great day with my mom.

I just ran into this post and thought it was cool. Here’s another Pisces. πŸ™‚ I saw that MariJo’s birthday is March 5…mine is March 8th. Very cool! It’s been great reading everyone’s comments too. Helps you put a little character to each name.

    A few randoms about me:

    I also have size 5 feet. :0)
I learned to play violin, but never learned to read sheet music.
    I LOVE chocolate!
My hubby and I have been together 28 years, married for 24.
I’ve become almost obsessive about learning all I can about nails and nail care. ;<)
I was born with a spinal condition that causes extreme pain at times, so I became an advocate for others who suffer from daily chronic pain so they can get the care they deserve.
Finally, I am from a large blended family. In total, there are 21 kids and I'm the 'middle' child of the 21, but the oldest of the 4 girls. The rest are boys.

It's been fun reading everyone's replies and getting an idea of everyone's personalities a little bit. Thank you for posting this Mary! I may do something like this on my blog one day soon. :0)

    Have a wonderful Sunday!

      Hey Angela!

YAYYY – another Pisces! πŸ™‚ In real life, I actually don’t know many, so this is pretty cool to share a birthday month!

Thank you for participating – I love getting to know more about my readers!

Okay, so now that I know you have size 5 feet, are yours narrow, wide, or regular? (Mine are narrow, so that makes it even tougher to find dressy shoes that fit.) Where do you buy your shoes? (Please share your secret sources! Haha, I am desperate to uncover some kind of small-foot mecca!)

Wow, kudos to you for learning to play the violin! I’ve never tried it, but I heard that it’s incredibly difficult.

Congratulations on being married for so many years! πŸ˜€ That makes me smile because a lot of couples break up, so when a couple lasts, it helps to reinforce the notion that love can last. Thank you for that!

Oh, I’m so sorry about your spinal condition, but I’m not all about sadness. I’m proud of you…REALLY PROUD of you, actually! Because a lot of people might be struck down with something like that, but you still seem to hold a positive attitude about a lot of things. That attitude is really important to see beyond the pain and setbacks in life and to move ahead, enjoy life still, and allow yourself to focus on the happier parts of life. You’re an inspiration, and it’s wonderful that you’ve become an advocate for those suffering from daily chronic pain. It takes a special kind of inner strength to do that.

Hahaha, your whole family could get together and play baseball! It must be cool to have so many siblings…but also challenging when it comes to birthday time. Hehe, are you celebrating birthdays nearly every month?
