OPI Spookettes Review & Swatches

It’s almost Hallowe’en! I’m excited, but also sad. Why sad? The closer we get to it, the more it means it’ll be overย soon. Wahhhh! (I really enjoy the anticipation leading up to an event.)

If you need some Hallowe’en nail-art staples, I recommend picking up the cute OPI Spookettes kit if you can still get hold of it.

It comes with 3 mini creme polishes: orange (He’s My Boo), white (Mummy Knows Best), and black (I Only Date Werewolves). But what’s really exciting is the green glow-in-the-dark lacquer (Zom-Body to Love)!

The OPI Spookettes set also comes with free nail decals!

OPI Spookettes Review

These mini polishes are going to just get a mini review each. I only like to do in-depth reviews if I’ve worn the polish on all my nails for at least a day and if I have lots of photographs to share instead of just a swatch wheel.

OPI He’s My Boo Review

He’s My Boo is your standard orange creme polish that dries smooth and shiny. It took me just 2 coats to achieve full opacity.ย This would make a great choice for pumpkin or candy corn nail art.

OPI Mummy Knows Best Review

Mummy Knows Best is a streaky white creme polish that I didn’t care for. The streakiness is way more noticeable in person than in my swatches.

I understand that white polishes are usually streaky, but I just felt like this one was worse than OPI Alpine Snow or China Glaze Snow. Even so, I’m glad to have it because I will use it to create the whites of the eyes in my nail art. For that purpose, it’s fine, just not for painting your entire nail with it…unless you want to use 3-4 coats and still have streaking issues.

I like the name of this polish. My dad used to always say, “See? Fathers know best!” So it’s funny that now this one’s for the ‘mums’. ๐Ÿ˜‰

OPI I Only Date Werewolves Review

I Only Date Werewolves is your standard black creme polish that has pretty good coverage and dries smooth. Hehe, and the name makes me laugh.

OPI Zom-Body to Love Review

This is the reason why a lot of people have already picked up this set. Hello, a glow-in-the-dark polish? It’s perfect for Hallowe’en and can take any nail art you do to the next level. (Think: glow-in-the-dark ghosts or skulls!)

By itself, it’s very sheer and has a soft, cloudy look to it. It dries with a subtle matte texture, so a top coat is required if you want it to be as smooth as a creme polish.

It’s best to layer this over another polish because when worn solo, you’ll get minimum coverage and your nail line will peek through. If you’re dead-set on wearing this by itself and are hoping to achieve the bottle colour, just know that it’ll take you well over 3 coats.

Also, keep in mind that this will alter the hue of your base colour. As you can see in my above swatch wheel photos, when layered over the black polish (OPI I Only Date Werewolves), it becameย grayish and speckled. If you choose to layer it over a light-green polish, you won’t notice too much difference, but if you layer it over a purple or yellow, you may get a new colour that isn’t pretty.

This polish doesn’t constantly glow in the dark. You have to expose it to bright light for a while and then it’ll be bright in the dark. But that’s typical of almost all glow-in-the-dark stuff.

Mini Bottle Size

Some people don’t like mini nail-polish bottles because they also have tiny brushes. I have small nails, so I don’t mind the small brush. And I really like these mini polishes for my toenails because my feet (and toenails) are small – I wear women’s size 5 shoes. The small brush is just right! Plus if you’re getting these to be used with your dotting tool or a nail-art brush, maybe these small brushes won’t dissuade you.

Nail Decal Overview

You get a total of 10 free nail decals (2 of each design), which I think was nice of OPI to include. Not everyone has nail-stamping supplies or likes to paint freehand designs.

Decals included:

  • Jack O’lantern face (black)
  • Spider (black)
  • Cobweb (white)
  • Trick or Treat text (white)
  • Bat (black)

To use these, your base polish must be completely dry. You remove the film over the decals, cut around the decal, dip it in warm water for 10 seconds, moisten the surface of your nail, remove the paper backing on the decal, and then place the decal on your nail. Afterwards, you’re supposed to blot it dry with a tissue. And although the instructions don’t say to, I think you should wait a few minutes before applying your top coat.

I didn’t want to just wear all these decals at once for the purpose of a review.ย I enjoy wearing a manicure and then showing you what I’ve worn. If I end up wearing any of these decals, I’ll let you know either in a separate post or I’ll update this post to include a photo.

Value

This is a great way to expand the colour selection in your collection without dropping a lot of cash on the full-size bottles.

    Pros

  • Has all the classic Hallowe’en nail-art colours
  • Mini set is affordable
  • Comes with free nail decals
    Cons

  • Small brush

Final Verdict: 8/10

This is a cute little set that’s perfect for Hallowe’en – it has all the colours you’d need to get festive.

Do you only date werewolves? Does ‘mummy’ really know best? Are you looking for ‘zom-body to love’? ๐Ÿ˜‰

I love the name “he’s my boo”. I think they did great colors for the Halloween season. Because normally you see mostly black and red. I am not a fan of red at all.

      Hey Kelly!

      Yeah, it’s a cute name for a polish. ๐Ÿ™‚

Oh, then you won’t like a lot of Christmas nail collections – red’s always everywhere!

I can’t believe I almost broke my commenting record! *gasp*

Okay, so I loooove Zom-body to love. I wish it was more green though since the Ghoulish Glow I got from the China Glaze set looks almost similar, except it doesn’t have much color which I think is perfect for layering over white. I would get this set if only for those awesome decals! ๐Ÿ˜€ I really was thinking of getting this but China Glaze got hold of me first and full-size is always better than mini. ๐Ÿ™‚

I was so surprised to find you have such dainty feet! Your nails don’t look small at all!

Haha, your commenting record is VERY impressive, so I’m glad that you kept it up. ๐Ÿ˜€ (Thanks for being such a loyal visitor and commenter!)

Yup, if you saw me in person, you’d also see that I have small hands. My nails don’t look small in blown-up photos, but when you see the size of my hands, you’ll see that everything is scaled down in proportion. Haha, I’m glad about this. I wouldn’t want to have small hands and then huge nails…although…they would be fun to paint. ๐Ÿ˜›

I’ve been looking for this set for a while but I can’t seem to find a store that has it in stock! I haven’t checked Sallys though – too long of a drive. It’s odd that the glow in the dark didn’t work on refresh mint :O but oh well, the color is quite pretty by itself. Did a top coat affect it’s glow in the dark ability?

      Hey Vivian!

I’ll have to test it out again on China Glaze Re-Fresh Mint because I don’t know why it didn’t work since it’s just a minty green. And I’ll also need to try adding a top coat to that swatch wheel. I’ll report the results in a comment to you and also edit the review to include that piece of information.

I love OPI nail polish!!!! I was wondering, does OPI’s black shatter work well? And, which shatter/crackle would you consider better: Sally Hansen, OPI or China Glaze. I want to buy the OPI Halloween two pack (glow in the dark and shatter) but I don’t know if I should get OPI or one of the different brands. This summer, I bought a crackle polish from Colour Club and the polish hardened between 1-3 months. BTW, this is out of the blue but I love your nails! Do youuse any nail care products to keep your nails looking so long and healty? Also, your nail shape is fabulous. One more thing, I live in Ontario and the Muppets nail polish has already come out in some of the Trade Secrets stores. PS: Sorry my comment was so long.

      Hey maddy!

Yes, OPI Black Shatter has worked very well for me. (If you want to see an old detailed review I did back in February: http://www.swatchandlearn.com/opi-black-shatter-review-swatches/)

I’ve never tried any of the Sally Hansen crackle polishes, so I can only comment on OPI and China Glaze. I found that they both were easy to use (and both had thick consistencies), but if you have to choose, I’d say go with the OPI mainly because it has a wider brush. For crackle polishes, that’s much better so you don’t have to keep dipping in for more polish and so that you don’t have to go over your nail so many times (which can disrupt the shattering effect). I had to concentrate more with the China Glaze, and it was easier to screw up with a thin brush.

Thank you so much for the compliment on my nails! ๐Ÿ˜€ I really wish I could be more helpful, but the only nail treatments I use are a base coat and a top coat. For the base coat, I rotate between Nubar Foundation Base Coat, OPI Natural Nail Base Coat, Orly Bonder, Nail Tek Foundation III/II, and I’ve tried a few others, too.

I think the strength of my nails is due largely just to genetics. My mom has strong nails, and my dad’s nails were strong. As for shape, my nails just grow with this oval shape, although I love the look of square/squoval nails waaaay better. Just doesn’t look right on me the times I’ve tried it. Not sure why. I also am not very good at shaping using a nail file, which is why when I trim my nails and file them, I stick to my oval-ish shape.

Yes! I’ve seen The Muppets Collection already at Trade Secrets! ๐Ÿ˜€ Isn’t that great how it’s out early? Gives people more time to snatch up their favourite colours and wear them sooner.

And don’t mind writing long comments. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m glad that you had a lot on your mind that you wanted to share with me! (And, as you can see from mine, I like writing long comments, too!)

      Hey Ruthe!

Do you think you’re going to get this or China Glaze Ghoulish Glow? If you don’t want the non-glow-in-the-dark look to be green, Ghoulish Glow is better. But, the green in this one is obviously what attracted me. Hehe! ๐Ÿ˜‰ (Like a moth to a light.)
