Maybelline Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil Swatches & Quick Look

Maybelline Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Eye PencilsEyeliner is a staple for me, and I wear it on a daily basis. It defines your eyes, bringing the focus to the ‘windows of the soul,’ as they say.

Ever since grade 10, I’ve been sporting eyeliner. That’s probably why I could give up all my other makeup if I was forced to, but eyeliner would be the one product I’d cling onto.

I love the ease of using a pencil, but I’ve also enjoyed the drama and lasting power of gel liner in a pot form. But with the latter, you need to use a brush, which isn’t exactly travel-friendly or I-need-to-rush-and-get-ready-for-work-but-I-have-to-clean-my-brush-first-friendly. 😉

So when PR provided me with several shades of the new Maybelline Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil that hits Canadian stores in July, I was thrilled!

My standards for a pencil eyeliner are very high because I’m set on what I like and what I don’t like. And I’ve had many years to see what works for me and what doesn’t.

(Black eyeliner is a staple for me, but I love adding a pop of colour along my lower lash line. The black and the blue gel pencils work very nicely together!)

I’ve already worn all of these Maybelline gel eyeliners several times, so you can expect an in-depth review of at least one of these.

For now, I’ve done a Quick Look post to show you swatches of all five colours, and I have the official press release, should you require further information.

P.S. Today is the LAST DAY to enter my China Glaze Baby Beats Micro Mini Set worldwide giveaway! (Ends tonight at 11:59 pm EDT)

      Hey Lizzy!

I really love the black, charcoal, and blue – been using them daily since I got them! The brown is also nice on the lower waterline when you don’t want something too dark. As for the white, I found that it was a bit patchy and doesn’t last on my waterline, so it was my least favourite of the bunch.

I do actually wear eyeliner every day, but I mostly use the ‘felt tip’ style eyeliners, they are the easiest to apply and have the best staying power in my experience. That white looks really interesting though, I like to use white to accent the inside corners of my eyes sometimes so I’d love to see how that one measures up!

      Hey Fedoraharp!

Since writing this post, I’ve tried the white on my lower waterline. Disappointed that it didn’t show up well! On the eyelid, it’s a bit patchy. I’m not sure how well it would hold up on the inside corners of your eyes, though.

I love eyeliner and wear it daily as well. I prefer the pencil but do own several pots of gel/crème as well

      Hey Sandra!

I used to reach for the eyeliner pots, but when I’m rushing to get ready for work in the morning, I tend to use pencils – so much faster!

I love eyeliner seeing as I recently graduated from the cosmetic techniques and management program I’ve found a new love for gel eyeliner. I actually like them in both the pot & pencil form. Black eyeliner is my go to color.

These pencils look really nice! I might pick one up. Nice swatches! Do you know if these are permanent or limited edition?

      Hey Flower!

All the information I have about these liners are in this post. I don’t remember seeing anything about it being limited edition, so it’s probably permanent. Fingers crossed because I love the black, charcoal, brown, and blue especially! Those go on so creamy and pigmented.

Question for you, and it is a stupid one. I bought the Cashmere white about 2 weeks ago and have used it maybe three times. It is out of the gel… am I missing something? I twisted the bottom thinking more would come up and it didn’t. I tried sharpening it just a little and that didn’t work. Is it just that this is something you can only use one or two times and toss away?

      Hey Confused!

Aww, don’t say that your question is stupid! Other people may have the same question as you, and I’m here to help. 🙂

These gel pencils need to be sharpened like a regular pencil. I’ve been using these pencils since I got them (even before I blogged about them), and there should be more gel inside when you sharpen them.

Is yours empty inside? That sounds like a defect, and if the inside is empty, you should maybe take it back to the store you bought it from, show them, and ask to exchange it. That’s not normal for these pencils.

You can use them up to they are little nubs. (I’ve been working through my black one the fastest.)

No problem! Just keep in mind that you may need to try several different pencil sharpeners, as some don’t seem to work. (I had no problems with the Urban Decay Grind House Sharpener.)

        Hey Pam!

This pencil needs to be sharpened, but judging from all the feedback I’ve received from other readers, it seems that not all sharpeners work on this product, sadly. (Scroll through the comments, and you’ll find a few suggestions. Hope that helps!)

      Hey Sanlee!

Sorry to hear that your eyeliner has been giving you trouble. I wonder if you got a dud. The pencils that PR sent me have sharpened very easily.

What kind of sharpener are you using? If possible, maybe try using a different one. I know that sharpeners can vary in terms of quality, the size of the hole, and the sharpness of the blade. Maybe the Maybelline pencil doesn’t fit your sharpener too well? It’s worth testing out a different sharpener, if you really love the pencil.

I hope that it works out for you.

Hi. It seems I’m having th same problw as everyone else. My pencil is plastic so I dosnt really sharpen at all. I just tried and just the plastic outside of as roughly cut off but the liner was untouched. Is there a certain type of sharpener maybe? But it really seems like they should twist or come with the correct sharpener since they seem more particularly.

Although one is “supposed” to sharpen these pencils, Maybelline doesn’t give any clues as to what to use to sharpen them. The plastic “barrel” just shreds. I wonder why the lower end of the pencil turns but doesn’t have any effect on the gel’s moving out of the body to where it can be used. So far it seems like a silly idea, not well thought out.

    I give it a minus 5 stars!

      Hey Nancy!

Oh, sorry to hear that you and apparently so many others are having this problem with your pencils! Strange how mine sharpened just fine. I used the Urban Decay Grindhouse pencil sharpener. Not sure if that should make a difference, since it’s just a standard size.

Can you exchange your pencil at the store you bought it from? Maybe it’s defective.

you keep suggesting everyone else’s pencil is defected, and seem so puzzled that yours sharpens just fine. Mine also is impossible to sharpen. I think it’s a rip-off.

          Hey Joan!

Yes, my pencil sharpens fine, and it’s possible that the plastic in the barrel is posing trouble for some people’s pencil sharpeners. I’ve used several of my pencils, and they’re half finished.

Have you tried a different sharpener to see if you’re having the same problem with your pencil? Have you contacted Maybelline to let them know that you’re having problems sharpening it? Maybe Maybelline will need to do a redesign.

This gel pencil is good but how do I sharpen it? Can the pencil scroll up and down? I am so puzzled how it can be sharpened. Maybelline should emphasize more on how to sharpen this thing. There should be more pencil inside.

      Hey Juliet!

I tried again today to twist the bottom of my pencils. They turn, but no product gets pushed up to the top. Also, I have been just sharpening them with the Urban Decay Grindhouse pencil sharpener, and it seems to be working fine. (There IS more pencil inside because I’ve been using my pencils, and they’re more than halfway done.)

I have a feeling that the plastic encasement is what may be giving people trouble with sharpening it. It’s thick and slippery. Hmm!

Have you tried using different sharpeners? I wonder if some work better than others. (I only have one sharpener, or I would’ve put more to the test.)

Hmm, yours twists up? Strange because I tried to twist the bottom of mine, but it didn’t make the product push up. I have to sharpen mine to get more of the pencil.

I also am having the exact same issue with my Maybelline LASTINGDRAMA waterproof gel pencil. The first one I bought I tried to twist and also tried to sharpen with no luck. I returned the pencil thinking that is was defected but now I have the exact same problem. I am not happy that I have to make yet another return to the store for the exact same purpose. This is ridiculous . I have tried many different sharpeners but none will work because the gel is too low and the plastic that surrounds the gel prevents sharpening. I liked the pencil for the first week and then I became extremely frustrated. Now I have exact same problem with second one. I think the company should replace my pencil and send me the sharpener they think works.
Interesting that the company does not know this or has not taken these off the shelves until the problem is addressed.

      Hey Mindy!

It sounds like a pretty common issue with these pencils, even though I haven’t experienced it with the ones I’m using. Maybelline should redesign the part around the pencil, since it’s posing a problem with the majority of sharpeners.

You should send Maybelline your feedback – it might help them to improve their product! (If enough people mention the same issues they’re having, Maybelline will most likely do some tweaking.)

I was having the same trouble as everyone else, with the pencil not sharpening. I have two sharpeners, though, and the second one works like a champ. It’s a little green one that came in a bag of Clinique stuff years ago. It’s got a different angle on the blade than my pink one, and I love that it worked!! (I had to dig for the second sharpener)

So, try again, if you’re having trouble.

      Hey Lisle!

Thanks for weighing in and sharing what worked for you.

Sadly, it seems like a lot of people are having an issue sharpening the pencil. Maybe the plastic part is too thick for typical sharpeners. I hope those who are having issues contact Maybelline and let them know. Only when consumers report a problem can companies work to fix it in the design and manufacturing process.

I’ve been using my Urban Decay Grindhouse sharpener, and I haven’t had any trouble, so it surprised me to hear that so many readers weren’t in the same boat. It’s good that everyone is voicing their concerns. Maybe Maybelline will read the comments here.

This pencil is a rip off. Used it about 5 times, it twists but nothing comes out of the barrel and there is nothing to sharpen. If so many people are having issues why is it still being sold? Obviously a major defect.

Yes, it’s unfortunate that so many people are experiencing this issue. It must be a design or manufacturing issue the company is having. Hopefully customers will report it, so Maybelline knows.

I just used my Covergirl Masters 3-1 Sharpener and it worked like a charm. Of course I bought this years ago and find products manufactured over the past few years the quality has gone done quite a bit! This pencil is great, but I agree, it’s useless if you can’t sharpen it.

Good to know that your Covergirl pencil sharpener worked with this Maybelline eyeliner. Thanks for leaving this comment! I hope that it will help those who have been struggling to find a sharpener that works. (Maybelline will really need to rethink the material they used in this pencil. I’ve tried 3 different sharpeners with no luck, then I got aggressive with it and kinda had to angle it just so, then it worked. It’s not the result I was hoping for because it gets a little mangled and isn’t pretty BUT it reveals more product. I form it, with my fingers, very gently. I’m going to find a better sharpener, possibly at Staples.

      Hey Jacalyn!

While I’m glad that you got it to work, it’s disappointing to hear that you really had to struggle. It must be an issue with the product design and not necessarily the sharpener. Hope that Maybelline will improve it for later releases, since there are so many people who are experiencing the same problem.

Have had the same problem with sharpening. I have tried the Cover Girl brand, a Clinique and one other cosmetic sharpeners, as well as, an electric pencil sharpener and even tried using my craft knife. Nothing works! I love the liner, but Maybelline has made a dud!
I would comment to them directly but do not wish to have to set upon account, password, etc. and then receive a bunch of junk mail. So, I guess I will have to try a different brand.
    So disappointing!
