Smorgasbord Sundays: What’s on My Walls

Owl PictureI’m a fan of art – it’s amazing how the same piece can be interpreted in so many different ways.

You’re used to seeing my painted nails in swatches and nail-art tutorials, but there are some other things that I like to paint. (You could insert a joke here about me wearing war paint on my face if it makes you happy.)

Many years ago, I got an easel, oil-paint set, and brushes as a gift from my boyfriend. I’ve used it only a few times – yeah, I need to bust it out more often. And I have 2 blank canvases that I still haven’t used yet. Hmm…I’m sensing an upcoming project!

I don’t have any formal training, so my techniques are very simple, but I liked the end results enough to display them in my home.

In this Smorgasbord Sundays post, I’ll show you 2 of the paintings I did and also a few random other things I have hanging on my walls.

P.S. No, the owl picture isn’t one of the paintings I did. I wish!

Smorgasbord Sundays: DIY Necklace Holder & Organizer Tutorial

DIY Necklace Organization TutorialCanadian Tire isn’t one of my favourite places to shop. They sell things like automotive tools, sports equipment, hardware, power tools, kitchenware, tires (yes), etc. It smells like boxes, sawdust, and a lack of nail polish. 😉 But I found myself there yesterday because I needed to pick up a few things including stuff for a necklace holder.

I’m not too big into ‘real’ jewelry, but I’m addicted to costume necklaces. You can’t beat low price points and a huge style selection.

Lately, though, I’ve been neglecting to wear them. They were tangled up in piles in boxes and on necklace trees.

A few days ago, I bought some more costume necklaces (I can’t be helped.) and decided that I really should organize and display my collection. My reasoning was that it would make me wear them more often if I could see them while I’m getting dressed.

I did a lot of research online and found really unique necklace holders on Etsy. While the prices were reasonable, I felt like I should be able to make a necklace organizer myself for a lot less. Also, since I don’t have much space to work with, I decided to utilize my wall. It was the perfect canvas.

I’m pleased to say that as long as you already own a hammer, you may only need to shell out about $2.99 CAD and about 15 minutes of your time if you follow this DIY Necklace Holder & Organizer Tutorial!

Smorgasbord Sundays: How to Make Easy Pumpkin Pie

How to Make Pumpkin Pie the Easy WayNot everyone is a whiz in the kitchen. And sometimes you just want to whip something up quickly instead of going through a lot of pomp and circumstance.

Other times, you want a dash of pomp and a 3/4 cup of circumstance simmered over low heat for 5.5 minutes.

I love me some pumpkin pie, but I don’t always have a fresh pumpkin handy. (Does anyone have one ‘just in case’? If so, I’ll be over in a jiffy…but only after you’ve made the pie…hehe! I’ll bring my appetite.)

So here’s my lazy-person’s guide for How to Make Easy Pumpkin Pie. You won’t need a fresh pumpkin, and this is not from scratch, so Martha Stewart, please click elsewhere or you’ll be completely horrified. 😛 Continue reading

Smorgasbord Sundays: Some of My Crushes

CrushesWe have all had a crush. You see the person. You feel giddy. You smile a lot. You write simple staccato sentences.

While I’ve never been obsessed with any celebrity, there are a few who I had crushes on.

For this Smorgasbord Sundays post, I thought it would be fun to show you my crush progression from when I was a kid up to today.

Are you curious to see how I went from admiring Kermit the Frog to Jamie Oliver? There are a lot of people and even a cartoon fox in between!

Hehe, I had some ridiculous early crushes, so hopefully it’ll make you feel comfortable enough to tell me who you had a crush on or still do today. I’d like to know! Don’t be shy! 😀

Smorgasbord Sundays: From Mary’s Desk – Some Things I Learned While Blogging (Part 1)

SwatchAndLearn.com Blogging Tips & TricksI may not be a blogging veteran who served time in the Nail Polish War and travelled the seven seas fighting for colour freedom. I don’t even have any cool badges or pins.

But after sticking with Swatch And Learn since July 25, 2010, I have learned a lot of valuable lessons that I feel are worth sharing.

I strongly believe that everyone can contribute. It doesn’t matter if you have very little blogging experience or even professional blogging experience – we can learn from each other and I have learned from others.

This is my contribution.

Today’s Smorgasbord Sundays post is a little different than my previous ones. Firstly, it’s way more text-heavy than picture-heavy. Secondly, there are lots of photos of my face. And thirdly, I have finally admitted to being The Cheshire Cat.

I will talk your ears off about jealousy, perseverance, and how to get over other common blogging hurdles. If you don’t want to listen, that’s okay – there’s no audio.

My intention is not to be preachy, and I swear to you that I wasn’t wearing a white collar while writing this. My goal is to share my thoughts and advice with you because I’m curious to see whether or not you feel the same way. Sometimes issues that bloggers face are swept under the rug, and that rug may be a little too small to conceal what has become the elephant in the room.

Smorgasbord Sundays: Where’s Waldo Is Proof That a Good Man Is Hard to Find

Where's Waldo The Fantastic Journey Book smallerWhen I was a kid, I really loved the Where’s Waldo? books because not only did they keep me busy for a long time, but it was fun to make up stories for the craziness that went on inside.

To this day, I still enjoy looking at them. I marvel at Martin Handford’s talent to create a world full of characters.

All these characters are busy in the pictures. They’re working, goofing around, getting into mischief, trying to save themselves from calamity, schmoozing, etc.

Despite all the busy shenanigans going on, the reader is asked to seek out Waldo and his travelling companions and not to get distracted in this quest.

I think this is a good message in life. Every single day, we meet tons of people – on the bus, in the store, in a line-up, at the bank, and other places.

Many remain strangers, but we choose with who to build long-lasting relationships.

Even when life feels like an ant farm filled with people who can sometimes appear cold and heartless, it’s important to find and surround yourself with the right company. This is our fantastic journey. Continue reading

Smorgasbord Sundays: I Eat Penguins!

President's Choice Banana Bread Little Penguins Soft CookiesPenguins are funny animals – the way they waddle when they walk and look like they’re wearing a tuxedo is enough to make me like them. Plus I think it’s very bizarre (and intriguing!) how they’re flightless birds that prefer the water.

So when I did some grocery shopping the other day and spotted these cute President’s Choice Banana Bread Little Penguins Soft Cookies, you know I had to get them.

My inner child was tugging at my shirt saying, “Can we get ’em? Can we get ’em? Can we get ’em?”

“We” got ’em. 😛

Look how fun the packaging is – 2 too-cool-for-school penguins being total badasses and riding a makeshift skateboard with bananas as the wheels. Continue reading
