Fragrance

First and foremost, if a scent makes me gag, it really doesn’t matter how well it moisturizes because I won’t want to wear it and have to smell a putrid fragrance. And I’m pretty picky when it comes to fragrances – most turn me off because they’re overpowering or because they give me a headache.

I haven’t tried a lot of scented hand lotions, so I don’t have a large pool to compare It’s a Slice to. I don’t have anything quite like it.

Scents are challenging to describe (because sometimes they can smell pretty different to different people), but I’ll try my best.

On the package, it says that the Cake It’s a Slice Velveteen Hand Creme is infused with mango and Shea Butter. What I detect is orange citrus with mango. But it’s not a juicy kind of fruitiness. There’s a slight powdery vanilla that makes the overall scent softer rather than sharp like a lot of fruity fragrances.

The scent is mild, but it’s noticeable. When you first put it on, it’s the strongest and can interfere with a perfume you’re wearing (depending on its strength). After a few hours of wear, it fades, so I don’t think it would pose too much of a problem in terms of clashing scents.

While it smells nice and doesn’t give me a headache, it’s not the super-sweet Vanilla Bean Noel type of scent that drives me bonkers.

Formula & Efficacy

I was extremely skeptical about this Cake hand cream because, in the past, when a cream is thin, it tends not to moisturize my hands very well. My experience with thin creams were always bad – they felt greasy, didn’t absorb well, and just sat on top.

So imagine my pleasant surprise when this thin cream softened my hands! Now, I didn’t use them on badly cracked skin, just dry skin, but still – this was impressive!

The cream is very light and absorbs extremely quickly – you won’t be stuck rubbing it into your skin for minutes. And after it absorbs, it’s not greasy! My skin felt satiny smooth and soft.

So far this winter, I’ve been lucky enough not to have to endure cracked, dry skin, but if it gets like that, I’ll test out this product and then update my review in this section to let you know.

In terms of effectiveness, the Cake Beauty hand cream does an impressive job considering its lightweight formula! I think this is perfect for those who want a good hand cream without the thickness or greasiness.

Ingredients

Normally I don’t expand on the ingredients because I include a photo with the full list, but this time, I had to say something.

This has Althaea officinalis extract! (Marshmallow extract!) Hehe, I love marshmallows! (In fact, when I was a girl, I named my white teddy bear Marshmallow!)

Packaging

When it comes to hand cream, I think that simple is best. And my preferred packaging is a squeeze tube like this one. A tube makes it a breeze to dispense the product hassle-free.

(Hand creams that come in tubs are the worst. A lot of times I’ve put the cream on and maybe want to dip back in for more, but because your hands are slick, it’s hard opening up a tub.)

I appreciate how the packaging is cute and simple with the orange-gradient design.

Price

Even though I enjoyed using this product and will continue to use it until it’s finished, I’m hesitant to purchase a new tube when this is done. The price is pretty heavy for a hand cream – it really is a luxury!

When I think about how I can purchase a huge bottle with pump of Aveeno for less than this hand cream, it makes me think twice. Then again, I’ve never been the one to splurge on a hand cream. On nail polish, yes, I’m a supah-freak! 😉 But for hand creams, I’m pinching pennies so hard that they split into two.

If you can afford the splurge, then this may be for you. For me, right now, it’s pushing my cheapskate hand-cream budget.

The Cake It’s a Slice Velveteen Hand Creme hydrates your hands well with a lightweight, non-greasy formula that smells of orange, mango, and a powdery vanilla.

I gave this product a high final score because of its effectiveness, but I had to take off points because the price is really high and because I wasn’t infatuated with the scent. (This second point is obviously extremely subjective.)
