Cake It’s a Slice Velveteen Hand Creme Review

Fragrance

First and foremost, if a scent makes me gag, it really doesn’t matter how well it moisturizes because I won’t want to wear it and have to smell a putrid fragrance. And I’m pretty picky when it comes to fragrances – most turn me off because they’re overpowering or because they give me a headache.

I haven’t tried a lot of scented hand lotions, so I don’t have a large pool to compare It’s a Slice to. I don’t have anything quite like it.

Scents are challenging to describe (because sometimes they can smell pretty different to different people), but I’ll try my best.

On the package, it says that the Cake It’s a Slice Velveteen Hand Creme is infused with mango and Shea Butter. What I detect is orange citrus with mango. But it’s not a juicy kind of fruitiness. There’s a slight powdery vanilla that makes the overall scent softer rather than sharp like a lot of fruity fragrances.

The scent is mild, but it’s noticeable. When you first put it on, it’s the strongest and can interfere with a perfume you’re wearing (depending on its strength). After a few hours of wear, it fades, so I don’t think it would pose too much of a problem in terms of clashing scents.

While it smells nice and doesn’t give me a headache, it’s not the super-sweet Vanilla Bean Noel type of scent that drives me bonkers.

Formula & Efficacy

I was extremely skeptical about this Cake hand cream because, in the past, when a cream is thin, it tends not to moisturize my hands very well. My experience with thin creams were always bad – they felt greasy, didn’t absorb well, and just sat on top.

So imagine my pleasant surprise when this thin cream softened my hands! Now, I didn’t use them on badly cracked skin, just dry skin, but still – this was impressive!

The cream is very light and absorbs extremely quickly – you won’t be stuck rubbing it into your skin for minutes. And after it absorbs, it’s not greasy!Β My skin felt satiny smooth and soft.

So far this winter, I’ve been lucky enough not to have to endure cracked, dry skin, but if it gets like that, I’ll test out this product and then update my review in this section to let you know.

In terms of effectiveness, the Cake Beauty hand cream does an impressive job considering its lightweight formula! I think this is perfect for those who want a good hand cream without the thickness or greasiness.

Ingredients

Normally I don’t expand on the ingredients because I include a photo with the full list, but this time, I had to say something.

This has Althaea officinalis extract! (Marshmallow extract!) Hehe, I love marshmallows! (In fact, when I was a girl, I named my white teddy bear Marshmallow!)

Packaging

When it comes to hand cream, I think that simple is best. And my preferred packaging is a squeeze tube like this one. A tube makes it a breeze to dispense the product hassle-free.

(Hand creams that come in tubs are the worst. A lot of times I’ve put the cream on and maybe want to dip back in for more, but because your hands are slick, it’s hard opening up a tub.)

I appreciate how the packaging is cute and simple with the orange-gradient design.

Price

Even though I enjoyed using this product and will continue to use it until it’s finished, I’m hesitant to purchase a new tube when this is done. The price is pretty heavy for a hand cream – it really is a luxury!

When I think about how I can purchase a huge bottle with pump of Aveeno for less than this hand cream, it makes me think twice. Then again, I’ve never been the one to splurge on a hand cream. On nail polish, yes, I’m a supah-freak! πŸ˜‰ But for hand creams, I’m pinching pennies so hard that they split into two.

If you can afford the splurge, then this may be for you. For me, right now, it’s pushing my cheapskate hand-cream budget.

    Pros
  • Hydrates hands well
  • Makes hands feel satiny smooth
  • Pleasant orange-mango-vanilla scent
  • Squeeze tube packaging
  • Lightweight formula
  • Not greasy
    Cons
  • Expensive (this is what I’d consider a luxury item)

Final Verdict: 8.5/10

The Cake It’s a Slice Velveteen Hand Creme hydrates your hands well with a lightweight, non-greasy formula that smells of orange, mango, and a powdery vanilla.

I gave this product a high final score because of its effectiveness, but I had to take off points because the price is really high and because I wasn’t infatuated with the scent. (This second point is obviously extremely subjective.)

Edit: Yay! Cake Beauty retweeted my review! πŸ˜€

      Hey althea!

Heheheh…she called you marshmallow? That’s a first! Did you like it when she called you that?

I have such strong connections of Marshmallow being my teddy bear. Marshmallow, is that you? πŸ˜›

This is one of the kinds of scents I like (orange-mango-vanilla), mostly because I love the fruits and vanilla. I really don’t think I would buy this because of the price tag. Aveeno is great for me and it moisturizes well and it goes on sale occasionally, I think I’ll stick to Aveeno.

      Hey maddy!

Aveeno is a great choice – very practical, economical, and effective. It doesn’t have the bells or whistles, but it gets the job done. πŸ™‚

Funny, I thought it would smell more like.. well, cake. Lol! I was imagining it smelling like red velvet cake..maybe because it said “velveteen” and my brain put “cake” and that together. *sigh* If it did smell like cake, I might be tempted. The price easily takes care of that though. It IS pricy for a hand creme! If I were to spend that much to begin with, I’d probably go all out and get the Crabtree & Evelyn Hand Therapy Creams for $4 more (same 100mL). Now, those are HG material except they’re pricey.

I just got my first Cake Beauty item recently and this one smells like cake. It makes me want to gobble it all up — but of course, I won’t. πŸ˜› You’ll see more of it in the mega Truckload Tuesday. πŸ˜€

Mmm…I got hungry reading your post. Craving cake pretty badly now…It’s all your fault! πŸ˜‰

I only have 2 other Cake Beauty products – those were Christmas gifts from my sister-in-law. It was a pleasant surprise!

Ooohhh…looking forward to your Truckload Tuesday post!

I have never used a cake product. Like you, I mainly hover over their display in sephora and never buy anything. What exactly is marshmallow extract? I thought marshmallows were man made from sugar and gelatin.

That’s what I thought, but apparently there is such a thing as a marshmallow plant! The root was used in a medicinal confection to ease sore throats.

Based on the name, I was expecting this to smell like sweet cake batter–maybe something along the lines of Philosophy’s Vanilla Birthday Cake?–but I was surprised that it smells more like citrus and powdered vanilla. Any hints of powder in a scent is a deal-breaker for me, so I don’t think I’ll give this hand cream a try. It’s nice that it absorbs quickly, though–I use BBW lotions, and am generally very happy with them, but they do leave a bit of a residue behind.

      Hey Jessica!

As long as you’ve found something that works well for you is what matters. πŸ™‚ But if you see this at Sephora, go ahead and give it a sniff. I’m not a fragrance expert, although I tried to accurately describe the scent.

Well….the teacher was an aging male former hippie who thought it was HILARIOUS…. I was flattered to have a nickname but it got annoying after awhile.
I’m trying to think of a non-pervy way to joke about me being a teddy bear but I can’t πŸ˜€

AHAHAHA, Thanks for the laugh, and your description of the teacher conjured up a funny mental image! (I’ll try to remember not to call you Marshmallow.)

I’ve never seen this brand before. I have issues with most scents giving me headaches too so I will have to check this out the next time I’m at Sephora. Thanks for the tip!

No problem! πŸ™‚ Hope you can find it easily enough. They have a bunch of other scents in case this one doesn’t do it for ya.
