If you want to banish dry skin like a medieval outcast, retire your suit of armour, and arm yourself with a bottle of Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion! (The lotion is mightier than the sword.)
Its packaging may look plain and boring, but it’s what’s inside that counts, remember? 😉
I’ve depended on this Aveeno hand and body moisturizer for a few years now. Every time that I’ve ever strayed, I always go back to this.
It works. And I like how it doesn’t have any frills or frou-frou fragrance that competes with the perfume I’m wearing.
This Aveeno lotion is a workhorse – does the job…even when it has work cut out for it! And dry skin doesn’t stand a fighting chance – it retreats to the valley. (Where’s the valley? I don’t know. But let’s just pretend it makes sense.)
Come see why this is a winter must-have for me!

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion Review
Effectiveness
In order for me not to “Bust” a moisturizer on Swatch And Learn, at the very minimum, it must do its job – moisturize! The Daily Moisturizing Lotion by Aveeno definitely moisturizes. And it starts to work immediately, which is why I like it so much.
I’m the type of person who doesn’t moisturize my hands often, but I wash them a lot. See the problem here? I’m stripping the natural oil from my skin a lot, but not replenishing it.
So, usually it’s when I start to feel that the back of my hands are dry when I use moisturizer. (I’m trying to improve my habits and get into the preventative mindset.)
Every single time that my hands have been parched and I’ve slathered this stuff on, it always started to work immediately.
If my hands are reallllly dry, then it’ll sting. But if my hands are just a normal kind of dry, it doesn’t irritate.
Lasting Hydration
What I enjoy about the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion is that not only does it start hydrating your skin immediately, but when it soaks in, your skin actually looks better – smoother and more supple.
When I’ve used this on my raw, sore hands in the dead of winter, this is the lotion that brought them back to normal and healed them.
The rare times that I reapplied this, I did notice that it kept improving the softness of my skin.
Can the Lotion Withstand Hand Washing?
No. If you use a good soap with water, you’ll be washing this lotion down the drain.
However, Aveeno has another formula in purple-and-beige packaging that provides intense therapy. I’ve tried it, and it actually stays on your skin even after one or two hand washings!
Consistency
Some people dislike the consistency, but I love it. It’s thicker, doesn’t feel greasy, and it’s not watery. When it comes to hand creams, I prefer something that’s heavy so that it lasts longer. And I find that a lot of the thinner lotions like the ones from Bath & Body Works just stay slick for too long.
This Aveeno moisturizer isn’t meant to be used exclusively for hands (you can use it on your body, too), but I mainly use it for my hands before I leave the house and before bed.
Packaging
The packaging is really no-nonsense. This doesn’t bother me, but if you’re looking for something pretty to have in your bathroom, haha, this isn’t it.
I really appreciate how this size comes with a pump – it’s easier to dispense the product. And even if you need to go back and get more, you’re not Butter Fingers trying to unscrew a cap.
However, obviously, this size isn’t meant for travelling. But you can get smaller sizes in a tube with a flip-up cap.

Final Verdict: 10/10
Yes, I gave this a perfect score! The Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion is my favourite lotion even though there are lots of prettier ones on the market that make you smell yummy. When I use hand cream, a lot of times it’s because I need hydration ASAP! It may not be an exciting product, but it gets the job done (and quickly, too)!
How do you deal with dry skin during this time of year? Do you like scented lotions? Do you prefer thick or thin lotions?
Hey look! It’s the lotion that I live in!
This is the lotion that I sent to my sis-in-law when she was deployed to Iraq and she loved it so I started buying it for myself because I figured that if it could keep her skin happy in the desert, it might help my chronically dry skin, too.
I love thick lotions because they seem to absorb better and they don’t end up dripping on the carpet if I tilt my hand the wrong way.
I use the Aveeno on my body, but my feet get Gold Bond Ultimate skin therapy cream every day. It’s a bit thicker and more expensive than the Aveeno, but my tootsies love it really keeps the callous action under control.
Every morning…a squirt of cuticle oil at the base of the toenail and a massage with the Gold Bond. At this rate, my feet should last a lifetime 😛
Hey karen!
YES, that’s a good litmus test – if it works in the dessert, it can surely work anywhere! 😉
I’m glad that I’m not the only one who likes this lotion even though it doesn’t have any bells and whistles. It works, and that’s enough for us, right? 🙂 And YAY for someone else liking thick lotions. It seems like almost everyone I know prefers the watery kind from Bath & Body Works…
Haha, I laughed when you said that your feet will last a lifetime. I hope so with all that TLC! 😀
This is the lotion my family uses at home and it works great.
Hey maddy!
So between candles, nail polish, and lotion, we’re pretty similar. 😉
This is THE BEST LOTION EVER!! I’ve tried tons of different lotions, my hands get really dry in the winter & this is the ONLY lotion that keeps my hands soft & not dry & red. LOVE IT! Though, I may need to give the purple bottle a try, since I wash my hands a lot.
Hey Melissa!
As far as I know, they only come out with a tube of the purple one. If they had a full-size bottle with a pump, I would buy that instead. It’s pricier, but soooo worth it. (If you think this Aveeno Daily Moisturizer does wonders, the purple one will blow you away…)
I have serious dry skin in the winter, and this is one of my saviors! I try staying away from scented lotions because they just dont quench my skin like I need.

Hey Amber!
It would be cool if Aveeno came out with lotions that were just as moisturizing as this but came in yummy scents, wouldn’t it?
Hey Mary! I love this lotion and use it too! But for a different reason!
My boyfriend used to be a tattoo artist, and we both have many tattoos- we both SWEAR by this stuff to use after you get a tattoo. This is the only thing we use on our tattoos. It works perfectly to deeply moisturize, without irritating. New tattoos are really a lot like a fresh sunburn- so it’s important to moisturize it to help it heal. This stuff is amazing! I also use it on my hands, feet and legs too!

Hey Emily!
That’s cool that it has another purpose, too.
How many tattoos do you have? And what’s the last one you got? (I don’t have a single tattoo, but I like the way tattoos look on others. It really is wearable art!)
I probably have one of the world’s most dry skin. Ever. I’m still looking for the best lotion, especially for winter. I’ve tried this (and all it’s other variants, the calming line with the lavender packaging is my favorite) and it’s perfect for the hotter, humid months. But come winter, and even with continuous use of Aveeno, I STILL get itchy. So far, I’ve found that Gold Bond works the best for me. It stops the itch and really keeps me hydrated. In past winters I used to layer Bio Oil with other lotions that usually work for me during the hotter months as I find that combo tends to keep the moisture in for longer. I always go for thicker lotions. I feel the watery ones don’t really do much for me to begin with. 🙂

Hey Carmela!
You know, it’s too bad that Fiona doesn’t still blog for Swatch And Learn. She used to always tell me (and readers) how verrrryyyy dry her skin was. I’m sure she would’ve been able to give you super recommendations that offer extreme hydration. (I do remember that she really liked a Jergens lotion, though. She did a review on it.)
I love this lotion too! However, I am now a die-hard Bath and Body Works fan (you should see my collection!) and I have come to love the scents. It all started with my mom buying some when she was in the States. She had really bad dry spots on her shins. She even went to the doctors and used prescription lotions/ointments that still didn’t work. She bought Bath and Body Works at the time Coconut Lime Verbena (now called Coconut Lime Breeze) lotion and it worked for her! That was the only thing she had tried that worked.
I find that the Bath and Body Works lotions work just as well as the Aveeno lotion, plus you get the yummy smells that come with them 🙂 And for a side note – Bath and Body Works has “Triple Moisture Body Cream” that has the same type of thick consistency as Aveeno. And you can get some awesome deals on them too 🙂
Hey Erica!
Oh yes, Bath & Body Works has an amazing range of scents! 🙂 And it really just takes that one scent to get you hooked. That’s how it was for me with Vanilla Bean Noel. After that, I was a goner. 😉
That’s pretty cool how the Bath & Body Works lotions helped your mom so dramatically! Haha, you’d think that the prescription stuff would be better!
luv
Hey Raegan!
Glad you’re also digging this practical and effective lotion! 🙂
