OPI Who the Shrek Are You? Swatches & Review

OPI Who the Shrek Are You SwatchesSome people see a cute puppy and want to take it home. Others check out a hot guy at the bar and want to take him home. I see green nail polish and just have to have it!

But sometimes I’m let down. Such was the case with OPI Who the Shrek Are You? from the Shrek Forever After Collection.

The snot-green color wasn’t what put me off as you might think. In fact, I actually dig the color because it reminds me of spring and I can’t wait until winter’s over.

Find out why I was so disappointed in this color, and why it doesn’t live up to OPI standards.

(January 19, 2017 Edit: It has been six years since I posted this review! A lot of time has flown by. WOW! I have recently re-swatched OPI Who the Shrek Are You?, and I decided to include a newer swatch of it here, since it depicts the colour better. See below. The rest of this post contains my original review and photos from 2011.)

OPI Who the Shrek Are You? Review

OPI Who the Shrek Are You? is the perfect bright spring green. Yeah, some may liken it to snot or vomit because it isn’t your typical, pretty girly-girl color, but that’s why I like it.

Unfortunately, when I wore this color, it gave me a case of lobster hands! By comparison, it makes my skin tone look reddish even when it’s not. Strike one!

OPI Who the Shrek Are You? also had a very thick formula that was runny at the same time. Strike two!

And after applying only two coats, it bubbled like crazy! There was no salvaging it even with a thick, correcting top coat like Seche Vite! Strike three!

In my OPI Who the Shrek Are You? swatches, you won’t see the bubbling because I snapped the photos before the polish was dry. When it dried, the bubbles were all over each nail like polka dots! It was so terrible that I had one of two choices:

  1. Remove everything & start fresh
  2. Add a glittery top coat to conceal the imperfect finish

I decided to go for the second option. (Stay tuned for my review on OPI Glow Up Already!, which is the glitter top coat I chose to go with.)

Pros

  • Fresh spring green color
  • No DBP, Toluene, or Formaldehyde
Cons

  • Thick formula
  • Bubbles like crazy all over when it dries

Final Verdict: 4/10

While OPI Who the Shrek Are You? is a fresh green that I had to own, I think it looks way better in the bottle than it does on my nails. And the fact that it bubbled so badly that I couldn’t wear it on its own gets two thumbs down from me.

If you decide to pick up this shade, I recommend adding nail-polish thinner to it to help with application.

But, after trying to wear this polish twice with disastrous results, this is a color I won’t be reaching for again anytime soon.

Have you ever bought a color you were excited to wear but then were disappointed with its performance? Which brand and color was it?

(Update: I added nail-polish thinner to my bottle, and now it applies beautifully and without any bubbling. My new Final Verdict Score is now an 8/10.)

I love this color for spring and summer. I haven’t used it in a while, but I can’t recall having any problems with it bubbling … no, just thinking about it now I’m quite sure it never bubbled at all. However, Rumple’s Wiggin’ and What’s With The Cattitude? from the same collection bubbled horribly for me. Funkey Dunkey did not, and I do not own the other two. I guess it’s just the pastel colors that have shoddy formulas.

Hi Jaycee! Hmm…sounds like you got a better batch. Did you try using nail-polish thinner for your bubbly ones to see if it helped? I may try that.

    Hey Mary,
I know this is an old post, but it intrigued me when I saw it in the “recommended reads” at the bottom of your Color Club Wild at Heart review.
I got my nails done a while back, maybe March 2011 and un-be-knownst (spelling?) to me, I picked the Rumple’s Wiggin’ colour (I don’t look at the names, I just pick it for the colour). It is a beautiful light purple colour, I loved it πŸ™‚ I didn’t realize that it was a Shrek collection colour until my cousin (my manicurist) pointed it out πŸ™‚ I thought it was pretty cool that OPI would bring out something like that ’cause when you think of Shrek you definitely don’t think nail polish colours πŸ˜‰
I may just have to get my nails done again and get Who the Shrek Are You? just to see if I like it as much on me as I do on here πŸ˜€

      Hey Erica!

I love reading all comments left by my lovely readers no matter if it’s on an old or new post. πŸ™‚

Yeah, it’s pretty cool how they put out a Shrek collection, isn’t it? Haha, and this one is a snot-like green. Sounds gross, but I like greens, so…it’s interesting to me.

Have you tried OPI What’s With the Cattitude? It’s the light blue from the Shrek collection. I really love it! It’s very fresh and clean without making your fingers look reddish like some pastels do.

No, I haven’t tried that one yet either. I don’t go and get my nails done that often, but I always try to pick a colour I don’t have at home πŸ™‚ I’ll try to remember that one when I go πŸ™‚

Cool – let me know how you end up liking them. πŸ™‚ It seems like more people love What’s with the Cattitude? compared to Who the Shrek Are You?.

This color is actually my favorite for pedicures … it makes my toes look happy πŸ™‚
I’m going to be so sad when the Dashing Diva near me runs out of this color πŸ™

      Hey Sharm!

Yes, this certainly is a ‘happy toe’ shade!

If you love it that much, would you consider buying a back-up bottle of it from that store? It might be worth it if you think you’ll burn through one bottle.
