Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Lip Swatches & Review

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Swatches Review

In early June, I got to wear all 10 of the newΒ Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencils that were released this August in Canada, thanks to PR sending me these and other Maybelline goodies!

In the above collage, I show 9 of them, but in this post, I’ll show you all 10 and let you know my thoughts on the general formula and packaging, as well as each shade.

If you follow me on social media, you already saw these lip swatches, but since I realize that not all my readers use social media, I decided to post them here. πŸ™‚

Which one do you like the most? My favourite is funnily enough the first one I ever wore – Berry Misbehaved!

As you know, I don’t post too many photos of myself (excluding my nails, of course), so this was a lot of selfies that I snapped with my phone.

I wore one colour each day I went to work, so that’s why the lighting is different. Sometimes I faced the window, other times I relied on office lighting, and some days were really sunny or dim. I didn’t swatch them. Each of them I wore for the entire work day and into the night until I washed up and went to bed.

Before I jump right into the review, in case you’re new to Swatch And Learn or missed my previous Quick Look post, click here to see it. It includes lots of pictures, as well as swatches on my arm. (You’ll be able to see the differences between the colours very well, since I have close-up photos that I took with my camera and not just with my phone.)

However, I’m going to repost just a couple of photos here to remind you of what all the pencils look lined up.

Lip Swatches!

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Berry Misbehaved

This was my favourite shade in the bunch because it’s vibrant and is a strawberry-toned red. I feel like it really wakes up my complexion and looks so cheerful.

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Cherry Cherry Bang Bang

Cherry Cherry Bang Bang is indeed a cherry red that reminds me of vintage pinups. It’s a classic red that I think a lot of people can pull off without trying.

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Plum, Please

I love dark lipsticks, and this one is the deepest one in the bunch. It’s not too dark that it looks blackened. The downside is that I found this one to be a little patchy, compared to the other shades. However, it’s not so bad, and I’ve worn it several times again because I enjoy the colour.

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Fast & Fuchsia

Fast & Fuchsia is a girly pink, and while there’s certainly nothing wrong with this colour, pink lipsticks rarely move me and get me excited. When given the choice between pink and red lips, I would 99.9% of the time opt for red. Still, this one is nice and very easy to sport.

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil I Like to Mauve It

If you’re looking for a very natural colour that’s like a “My Lips But Better” kind of lipstick, this might be the one for you. This colour was so close to my natural lip colour, I could probably apply it without a mirror, and it would look okay.

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil I’m Blushing

I’m Blushing is a deeper magenta on me, and I like this bolder colour much more than the Barbie pinks.

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil My-My Magenta

My-My Magenta is a vivid hot pink that is brighter and wakes up my complexion. I enjoy this a lot. It made me think immediately of a girls’ night out!

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Orange Ya Glad

Orange Ya Glad was way out of my comfort zone because I rarely wear orange, but this one was nice. It’s like an entry-level one because it’s not overly bright or pale.

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Partner in Crimson

Partner in Crimson is a rich red, and I love this one. It’s so easy to wear, and I think it suits a lot of different skin tones.

Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencil Pink Insanity

Pink Insanity was my least favourite in the bunch because it’s a cool-toned Barbie pink. These kinds of pinks tend to make your teeth look way more yellow than they actually are.Β Yes, it’s undeniably a fun shade, but I don’t think it’s very flattering on me, and it clashes with a lot of my clothes.

Colour

While the range of colours isn’t the most extreme (no blue-based purples or blacks), but I feel that all 10 shades are popular colours that most people can find a handful that they’d like to wear.

Most of the shades are bold, so if you’re more into nude lips, I Like to Mauve It will be your only option. The rest pack a punch and are very pigmented.

When I reach for lipsticks, the majority of the time, I want something bold, so these are right up my alley.

Finish

As the name would suggest, all of these have a matte finish, but it’s not overly dry. They are definitely not sticky, but they don’t make my lips feel like sandpaper, either.

Application & Formula

All of the shades I wore applied smoothly and easily, but Plum, Please, which is the darkest shade was noticeably streakier than the others. However, it’s not a deal-breaker because with a little more effort, you can make it look even.

Each of the lipsticks I wore for a full day and into the night. I didn’t touch them up, and I ate my lunch, drank water, and went about my normal routine while at work.

I was really excited to see that they looked great for the entire work day and lasted even after having lunch. (Of course, if you’re going to eat greasy wings, don’t expect it to last. But if you’re eating just a regular meal, it’ll hold up nicely.)

I applied a little lip balm and then blotted my lips with a tissue paper before applying them. This helped to keep my lips from feeling parched because no matter how great any matte lipstick’s formula is, it’ll naturally get drier throughout the day.

As you may know, my all-time favourite and most-worn lipstick is MAC RiRi Woo (it’s nearly the same as MAC Ruby Woo), and they both have a super-dry Retro Matte finish. So, I am not scared to wear dry lipstick. In fact, I love them because they are bullet-proof!

The Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencils aren’t as dry as the Retro Mattes. They feel creamier, but not greasy or thin. They really hug your lips.

Packaging

The tube is thin and comfortable to hold, and you just have to twist the barrel to push up more product. I love how the lipstick is in a pencil form. It makes lining your lips and then filling them in easier, since it’s more precise.

Scent

At first, I thought that there was a mild mint smell to these pencils, but then I realized that (DUH!) I had put on minty lip balm prior to using them, and of course the balm got a little bit onto the pencil!

They don’t actually smell like anything much, not even the typical Maybelline lipstick smell that’s a bit like Play-Doh.

That’s good news for me because if I don’t like the way a lip product smells, it can be a deal-breaker.

Price

Each lipstick is $11.99 CAD, which is very reasonable. Plus considering how pigmented the lipstick is and that it lasts so long, you get a lot of value for the price.

Smudger

Each pencil comes with a smudger that you can use to blur the colour or mix multiple shades to create an ombre effect.

I’ve tried doing this, but didn’t take any selfies.

Pros

  • Beautiful, pigmented colours that are easy-to-wear
  • Creamy & not overly drying
  • Trendy matte finish
  • Long-lasting
  • Slim tube is comfortable to hold
  • Twist barrel to push up more product
  • Pencil allows you to line & fill in lips
  • Great value
  • Comes with a smudger to create ombre looks or to blur the colour
  • No noticeable scent (Also doesn’t have that typical Maybelline lipstick Play-Doh scent)

Cons

  • Mostly bold shades (which is a Pro for me), so if you’re looking for nudes & soft shades, you pretty much only have I Like to Mauve It as your option

Final Verdict: 9.5/10

I’m in love with the Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencils, and have gotten a lot of use out of all of them, except for Pink Insanity.

Hopefully Maybelline will release new shades with the same formula and expand the range to include nudes to appeal to more people, as well as purples and novelty shades.

Have you tried the Maybelline Color Blur Matte Pencils? What lipstick shades would you want Maybelline to release in this formula? Do you take lots of selfies?

I’m not a big make up person. I only wear it out of necessity, but i’m really liking the lightest shade of the group-I like to Mauve it. I think I might have to give this one a try. Thanks as always for sharing. They all looked great on you! πŸ™‚

      Hey Melissa!

Out of all the colours, I Like to Mauve It is definitely the easiest one to sport. Hope you like it – it’s very natural-looking.

      Hey Leanie!

Most of the colours fell within my comfort range, which was cool because I’ll be getting a lot of use out of these lipsticks! πŸ™‚ Hopefully Maybelline will add more shades to the range. I really want a purple in this line!

Man, I wish they sold these around here! We do get Maybelline but we don’t get a very large selection of it imported. I would definitely be picking up a few of these, particularly Cherry Cherry Bang Bang, Plum Please, and Partner in Crimson. I’m actually wearing something very similar to Orange Ya Glad on my lips right now. And to be honest I probably have similar dupes of Plum Please and Partner in Crimson because I’m fairly predictable when it comes to lip shads, but I’d probably buy these anyway πŸ˜€

(sorry for the sudden influx of comments on old posts, I haven’t checked any blogs in a while so I’m playing catch-up now)

      Hey Fedoraharp!

Sorry to hear that these will be tricky, if you want to track them down. I was very impressed with these – love the precision you can get, and the colours are so wearable.

Maybe they’ll land in Israel, but just a lot later? *Fingers crossed*
