Consonant Natural Lip Conditioner Pure Unscented Review & Pictures

Consonant Natural Lip Conditioner Review & PicturesAt the beginning of this month, I had the pleasure and honour of being invited to attend an exclusive launch for Consonant Skincare’s downtown location located at 120 Adelaide Street West (Unit R12) in Toronto’s Richmond-Adelaide Centre.

You’ll remember that previously, I published my exclusive interview with Consonant Skincare’s owner and CEO, Bill Baker. Bill was also at the event, and we got to chit chat about the brand and the wide range of natural products.

The core philosophy of the brand is that what you put on your body goes in your body. That’s why they offer natural skincare – they’re not laden with chemicals, so their products are a great choice for those who are looking for healthier skincare options.

After the event, I received a wonderful bag filled with goodies, which I shared on my Instagram here.

One of the treats inside was this Consonant Natural Lip Conditioner Pure Unscented, which is 100% natural and has high levels of essential fatty acids, which are important for healthy skin.

It’s the first Consonant Skincare product that I’ve ever tried. I’m a big fan of lip balms, so it was a no brainer that it would be the first item I’d try.

Consonant Natural Lip Conditioner Pure Unscented Review

Scent

Unscented products for skincare are some of my favourites because then I don’t have to worry about being turned off by the fragrance. (I have a sensitive nose, and sometimes a strong scent can give me a headache, even if it’s pleasant initially.)

Although I enjoy minty lip balms, ones that don’t have any scent are ideal because they suit any situation.

Seeing how a lip balm is used on your lips, which are close to your nose, sometimes a scent can seem even stronger, and some scented lip balms can make you swear you can even taste it in your mouth.

The good news is that the Consonant Natural Lip Conditioner doesn’t smell like much, so it’s not offensive, and it’s suitable for everyday wear, even by those who are the most sensitive to smells. It’s not perfume-y, fruity, or minty in the slightest.

Hydration

This Consonant natural lip balm claims to protect, soothe, and hydrate dry lips, and I found this to be true.

When the weather’s been fluctuating so much, my skin has trouble adjusting sometimes, and there were a few days when my lips have felt unusually parched. Those times were especially great for putting the Consonant lip balm to the test!

I never have extremely dry and cracked lips (even in the winter), but if you go skiing or participate in extreme outdoor winter sports, maybe you could test it out even further.

For my everyday use, I found that the moisture provided by the Consonant Natural Lip Conditioner made my lips feel comfortable and soft.

Longevity, Formula & Finish

The consistency of this natural lip balm is very different than the balms that I tend to use and love. (I often reach for something thick and in a squeeze tube, such as the ones by Jack Black or First Aid Beauty.)

In comparison, the Consonant Natural Lip Conditioner comes in a stick tube and has a thin formula that leaves a healthy-looking sheen.

The thin consistency felt light on my lips. Since the consistency was so much thinner than what I’m used to, it felt greasy. But it wasn’t greasy in a I-need-to-remove-this-because-I-feel-gross way. It was just that it didn’t feel thick like my other balms.

Unless I’m wearing lipstick, I’m the type of person who habitually re-applies lip balm because I love the feeling of having smooth and soft lips.

Reapplying this balm was easy to slick on because it has a smooth formulation, and the tube makes it easy to twist the bottom to push up more product. (It’s less messy than lip balm tubes that I tend to use.)

Unlike thicker lip balms that allow me to apply it once and it lasts for 3-4 hours, I found that I felt the need to apply this one more often because of the thin formulation. Then again, I like my lips to feel overly moisturized.

Ingredients

As you can see by the ingredient list, it is short, not filled with chemicals, and is 100% natural. This is especially important if you’re pregnant or if you’re just looking for a healthier alternative.

It harnesses the power of Sweet Almond Oil and Jojoba, which are skin-loving ingredients.

Price

For $6 CAD a tube, the Consonant lip balm is affordably priced and in line with many lip balms on the market.

Can It Be Used as a Lipstick Base?

One of the claims for this lip balm is that it can be used solo or as a base for lipstick. Seeing that I’m wearing lipstick more often these days, I wanted to test that out.

If you’re going to be wearing the popular matte-finish lipsticks, you’ll need to blot your lips with a tissue paper after applying the lip balm. Otherwise, your lipstick will take on the sheen from the balm. (If you’re wearing shinier finishes, then using this lip balm is fine.)

Alternatively, I found that dabbing (instead of swiping) the product onto my lips also made it wearable with matte lipsticks so that there wasn’t too much slickness that would impart a sheen.

How I Prefer to Use It

When I first tested out this product, I used it during the day because I knew that I would tend to reapply it several times.

However, since I prefer to use a lip balm with SPF during the day, I ended up reserving the Consonant Skincare lip balm for the night, right before bed. When I use it this way, I wake up to my lips feeling comfortable.

Pros

  • 100% natural
  • Canadian (I’m Canadian, so while I do promote companies/brands from all over the world, it’s nice to be able to promote one who’s local.)
  • Convenient, mess-free stick tube
  • Hydrates lips
  • Unscented (Can be a Con for some)
  • Thin formulation (Can be a Con for some)

Cons

  • Unscented (Can be a Pro for some)
  • Thin formulation (Can be a Pro for some)
  • Can feel a bit greasy at times
  • Doesn’t contain SPF

Final Verdict: 7/10

Although the Consonant Skincare Natural Lip Conditioner in the Unscented version worked well on my lips at hydrating them and keeping them smooth, it hasn’t knocked my Holy Grail lip balm to second place. That being said, I like using this at night because there’s no SPF, and it does a good job.

I was so excited to see you review this! I’ve had my eye on this to replace my beloved Jack Black (thanks again for the reco, btw!) but now that I’ve read your review, that might not be the case at all… I’m looking to switch to something organic/green but the other lip balm I was looking at, an RMS Beauty one, is pretty pricey. I already have the Bite Beauty treatment one and it doesn’t really deliver like Jack Black does (was tempted to send it back but my hubby loved it for his winter parched lips so I gave it to him, lol). Guess my perpetually parched lips will have to stick to Jack for the moment. Thanks for saving me the $ I would’ve shelled out otherwise! P.S. I do love their cleanser and have my eye on trying the Hydraextreme (did I get that right?) serum. 🙂

      Hey Stacey!

So glad that you found my review helpful! Aww, and thanks for stopping by my blog. I know that you’re really busy with your cute daughter. (She’s growing up so quickly, isn’t she?) 🙂

So awesome that you’ve been enjoying Consonant skincare! I’ll be reviewing that HydrExtreme serum on here most likely. Still want to test it out more before I share my thoughts on it.

Hmm, I also haven’t found any lip balm that’s more effective than the Jack Black ones. (The First Aid Beauty lip balm hydrates nicely, but it doesn’t have SPF, which is important for the daytime.

I’ll let you know if I find anything comparable to Jack Black, and if you do, please let me know!

      Hey Sasha!

My pleasure! So happy to that you took the time to leave me a comment!

Do you use the same lip balm at night that you do in the day? I’m curious. (Sometimes, I also use my Jack Black lip balm at night, even though it has SPF.)
