OPI 50 Years of Style Swatches & Review

OPI 50 Years of Style Swatches & ReviewSome gold polishes can be tricky for me to wear because the undertone is more of a champagne than a yellowish gold.

Unfortunately, such was the case with OPI 50 Years of Style from the Ford Mustang Collection.

It’s a decadent colour – there’s no doubting that, but the shade looks ‘off’ against my skin tone.

If you have a lighter or a richer skin tone than I do, I think it would look way more flattering.

Key Notes

OPI 50 Years of Style Review

Colour

The champagne gold looks very elegant, and when I wore this, I felt like I should be attending a fancy cocktail party.

Unfortunately, this shade just didn’t jive with my skin tone. I look better in golds that lean yellow more strongly and that aren’t as pale. However, just because it doesn’t flatter me doesn’t mean that it won’t look good on you. Sometimes, you have to try it on your nails to find out.

Finish

I’m not the biggest fan of the frosty finish because it leaves brush strokes. If the colour suits me, I can sometimes overlook brush strokes, but this one had a strike on both counts for me.

50 Years of Style by OPI shimmers and sparkles because of the frosty finish, and it’s really pretty. If only the brush strokes were less prominent.

Application & Formula

When applying a polish like this, you have to be more mindful of the placement of your brush when you’re painting. If you do a messy job, the brush stroke lines will be crooked. Try to paint it on straight, so at least your nails look uniform. Otherwise, crooked lines on all of your nails could create a weird illusion that all your nails are wonky.

I found that with two coats, I got great coverage, and I didn’t feel the need to add another layer.

Pros

  • Decadent champagne gold
  • Good coverage
  • Pretty shimmer from the frosty finish

Cons

  • Shows brush strokes

Final Verdict: 5.5/10

As you can tell from the low score I gave 50 Years of Style by OPI, I’m not the biggest fan of it. On another person, it could look swoon-worthy, but I think it washes out my skin tone and doesn’t add that ‘something extra’.

The next time I wear this, I’ll need to do nail art on top like stamping to ‘make it work’.

What type of gold nail polishes suit your skin tone best? Do you like frosty finishes or do you think they’re dated? Do you mind brush strokes?

      Hey Melissa!

From what I’ve seen in online swatches (since I don’t own that polish), it looks like OPI Bling Dynasty leans more orange and is more saturated than 50 Years of Style. 50 Years of Style is much lighter, more like a champagne.

Thanks for the review! I’ve been looking for a good gold shimmer for a while (not a metallic foil) and I thought this might be the one, but based on your evaluation, skin tone compatibility seems to be pretty important. I’ll have to check it out in person.

I love frost finish, despite the brushstrokes! The color is a warm golden, like a chocolate foil! Yummy! I’m pretty pale (and my undertone is cold), so I don’t think this beuty could fit for me, but… I like it sooooo muuuch!

      Hey GoldFrancine!

It’s nice that you’re able to overlook the brush strokes! I know that it’s a deal-breaker for some nailphiles.

I like this color but since I already have Love.Angel.Music.Baby from the Gwen Stefani collection (which I feel is the matte version of this polish) I won’t be buying.

      Hey Megan!

It’s good that you’ll be saving your money that you can put toward another nail polish that’s more unique in your collection! 🙂
