OPI 4 in the Morning from the Gwen Stefani Collection is a sharp contrast from yesterday’s post, isn’t it?
The neon rainbow dotticure was all gumdrops and unicorns floating on a candy-floss cloud. But today’s manicure is like an anatomically correct rubber superhero’s suit!
When I saw OPI 4 in the Morning in the bottle, I didn’t know it would take me for a spin around the block with the convertible top rolled down!
Oh yeah, I am in love with this! It’s edgy, of course, because it’s dark and foreboding. But the satin finish gives it an editorial feel.
In fact, I loved wearing this polish so much that while I wore it for several days straight!
P.S. You’ll see that on my thumb and ring finger, there’s a tiny ‘bump’. Apparently I got some mystery lint on my nail, but I only noticed after I finished painting my nails. It didn’t bother me because it was barely noticeable. It’s only on the blog when nails are blown up larger than life! Can’t let a little imperfection bring a whole manicure down, right? 😉

OPI 4 in the Morning Review
Colour
4 in the Morning by OPI is a very dark grey that’s almost black. At first, I thought it was similar to Illamasqua Scorn, but this one actually has small specks that Scorn doesn’t have. These specks help to give the colour a bit of an interesting greyish sheen rather than make it look very glittery. Also, they’re more apparent in my photos than in real life.
I think that it’s because of this sheen that 4 in the Morning doesn’t look very harsh. There’s a softness about it, but it’s still edgy without being a traditional gothic black nail polish.
Finish
What really makes me love OPI 4 in the Morning is the satin finish. It’s not a flat matte, but it’s also not shiny. It’s almost like frosted glass in terms of texture. I think it feels luxurious!
Also, when it sadly came time for removal, I was pleased to see that this nail polish is easy to remove. It comes off as quickly as a creme polish, which is a snap!
You may be wondering if wearing hand lotion affects the finish. Well, I wore this for several days straight and had to wear a lot of hand lotion because my skin has been feeling dry this winter. I was happy to learn that the lotion didn’t make the polish go from a satin to a shiny finish. It may have added a little sheen after about 3 days of using hand lotion, but it wasn’t so drastic.
Application & Formula
4 in the Morning by OPI applied smoothly, and it was a breeze to get every part of the nail completely covered. Even with one coat, it covered well, but with 2, I got the look I wanted.
The formula dries very quickly, and I think it’s neat how it goes on wet and shiny, but as it dries, it becomes more of that satin finish I love. You can literally watch it dry!
I must have gotten a piece of mystery lint on 2 of my nails, and I didn’t notice until the very end. With a regular, shiny nail polish, if that accidentally happens, you can paint another coat to cover it and smooth out the look. However, I found with the satin finish, it’s less forgiving if you accidentally get something on your nails. (As you can see from my photos, on my thumb and ring finger, I wasn’t able to paint over and make it ‘disappear’.)

Final Verdict: 9.5/10
I loved wearing OPI 4 in the Morning much more than I thought I would, and I can definitely see myself wearing it again solo or as a base for nail art.
Plus I really loved how you can visibly see it drying. That’s pretty fun!
Which of the OPI Gwen Stefani Collection nail polishes interest you the most so far? Would you dare to wear this satin-finish grey? Do you also think it’s neat to see a polish dry and go from shiny to a satin finish?
I LOVE this one… I kind of thought about a no-buy for a while after the obscene amount of polish I got last year but thinking about it doesn’t count, right? 🙂
Hey Joyce!
Haha, thanks for the great laugh! 😉 I totally get where you’re coming from when you say an obscene amount of polish! 😉
LOVE…THIS…COLOR! OMG, I’ve got to have this one. It’s going on my “Gotta Buy ASAP” List.
Hey Melissa!
You’ll love it even more in person because the finish is so sexy!
It is for sure a pretty polish , shame indeed it has problems with getting it smooth
Hey Icequeen81!
Oh, it was just my own application error, not the fault of the polish! I just got some dust or something on my nail that I painted over.
Wow! Looks totally different in flash! I think i love this whole gwen collection 🙂

Hey Craftynail!
Yeah, I like showing flash photography because a lot of times, it better shows the base of the polish or certain undertones. 🙂
I want. I want. I want! I love the satin kind – regal looking. It reminds me of the black rubber-type one from Illamasqua.
Hey Katerina!
It’s similar to Illamasqua Scorn, except OPI 4 in the Morning has a little bit of speckling (but it’s reallllly subtle).
After seeing your swatches, I’m now even more excited to get my mini set in the mail :).
Hey Tanya!
Aww, thanks so much for saying that! 😀
I bought Love, Angel, Music Baby just to try the satin finish and ended up going back the next day for 4 In the Morning because I fell in love with the formula. It goes on like butter…SO smooth! You’re right about the look. It has the edgy look of black but the silver flecks really kick it up a notch to pure elegance.
This one is going to the front of the drawer where all of the most frequently worn polishes hang out.
Hey Karen!
I’m glad that you got OPI 4 in the Morning and also loved it! 🙂 It’s so different than just another flat matte black.
Ohhh, so it’s now Ms. Popular, eh? 😉 At the coolest hangout!
wow! Your review here is what prompted me to buy this one. I’m not a fan of flat or satin finish.. Or really super dark colors. Even after i got home and swatched it on a wheel, i was not impressed.. BUT.. When i put it on my nails, some kind of magic happened!! O.O
Sexy, edgy, exciting.. Everything you said above!
LOVE it!!
Hey Pema Grey!
Thank you for taking the time to leave me a comment!
This polish is so deceiving in the bottle, isn’t it? And then when you wear it, it’s like, WOW! I’m glad that you also experienced the magic! 😉
