When I posted a quick group bottle shot of the OPI Couture de Minnie Collection on Instagram, one of my followers/readers mentioned being curious about seeing OPI Minnie Style layered over black.
Okay, initially, I was going to wear it over black, but I decided to add a slight twist with a very-dark blue. It’s close enough to black, so I think it’ll still scratch the itch of seeing it over black.
The dark blue I used beneath OPI Minnie Style is OPI Incognito in Sausalito, which is from the OPI San Francisco Collection coming out in August.

OPI Minnie Style Review
Colour
Minnie Style by OPI may have been advertised as having white and red glitter, but when I closely inspected the hexagonal glitter, I realized that it was really white and magenta.
When I looked at my nails at certain angles, the pieces of magenta glitter did look red, but when viewed straight on, they are definitely magenta.
The glitter is suspended in a clear base, which makes the polish very versatile since you can layer it over nearly any base colour. This is exactly the kind of lacquer I love to play around with – the combinations are virtually endless, so you’ll never get bored!
And what I appreciated was that only the magenta pieces were reflective, so they really stood apart from the white glitter.
This combination of OPI Minnie Style and OPI Incognito in Sausalito really garnered a lot of attention from even strangers.
Literally, when I was taking public transit, a middle-aged man sitting beside me looked at my nails, did a double-take, and then proceeded to stare at my nails for a good 30 seconds. It may not seem like a long time, but when a stranger keeps looking for 30 seconds, it feels longer.
Also, when I was helping my boss during a job interview, the candidate actually commented on my nails, pulled them closer to inspect them, and then asked if I painted my own nails! 😉 (Hehe, she needed to focus on her interview and not my nails!)
Finish
Minnie Style by OPI has medium-sized glitter, but I think because there’s ample clear polish to coat each piece, the result is a smoother finish than I was anticipating. Although it’s not as smooth as a creme nail polish, it’s still very smooth!
Application & Formula
Applying OPI Minnie Style was pretty easy. I used a single coat, but it dispersed just the right amount of glitter I wanted, so I didn’t feel the need for a second coat.
You’ll notice that most of the glitter deposits onto your nail on the section you first place your brush. With this polish, in order to get an even look, you’ll need to manipulate the glitter with your brush and push around the pieces. It’s not difficult to do, but just know that you can’t paint your nails in the same fashion as you would with, say, a creme nail polish.
Sometimes the hexagons will want to hang beyond your free edge. Don’t let that happen, or it will be sharp! Instead, push them back with your brush, or you can even use the pad of your finger on your other hand to carefully push them back.
Like most glitter nail polish, OPI Minnie Style dried a little quicker than your typical polish. I still applied Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat over it all because I wanted it to be rock hard and even smoother.

I enjoyed wearing OPI Minnie Style so much that I wore it for several days! This combination, particularly, really was a joy to wear. I love how the glitter brightened up the dark blue, and it added a fun quality. This is what I wore for the Victoria Day long weekend, and I imagined that I had ‘fireworks’ on my nails. 😉

Hi Mary! I have a question. I bought a bottle of this last week and mine has white square pieces in it in addition to the red and white hexagons. I noticed you didn’t mention squares at all. Are they in yours too or is my bottle just defective? Lol, I’ll still wear it regardless, I just want to make sure I’m not hallucinating :).

That sounds pretty awesome! I inspected my bottle again after hearing that you found squares in yours. Aww, no such luck with my bottle. There are just hexagons in mine! Yours sounds more interesting!
Hehe, thanks! It must just be a manufacturing error since they’re exactly like the white squares in OPI Lights of Emerald City. This is why I love being optimistic, instead of being diasappointed I’m like this is kind of cool :).
Cherish that bottle – I don’t think it’s very often that OPI makes a production mistake like that. It’s really special, if you think about it. It’s like you own a unique piece of history that even a lot of die-hard nailphiles don’t have.

Thanks – wanted to put a little twist on it. I think that even if you tried a lighter shade of blue, it would still give it an interesting look. 🙂 I can’t wait to try it over other shades.
I love seeing this polish over a dark color. All the other swatches I can find had it over the Minnie Collection colors. I really like the matte white glitter general, but for some reason, I don’t like the mixture of shiny red (but actually magenta!) hex glitter with the matte white. Maybe it’s because I’m not a huge fan of red polish anyway, I just didn’t like it in person. I’ll be passing on this one.

Same here – I’ve seen so many swatches of it with pinks and reds. I just had to try it over a black.
It’s a common pet peeve of mine that it’s often hard to find glitter polishes swatched over colors that are not from the same collection when they first come out. That’s why I enjoyed this post, and also your post with OPI Lights of Emerald City over a teal. 🙂

I know what you mean. But I think a lot of bloggers just like to play around with combinations with colours from the same collection because it’s convenient. However, a lot of times, I’m more curious about mixing shades with older shades or even colours from another brand. Just the way I’m wired. 😉 Guess it’s a ‘need’ to feel unique.
