A manicure that looks wet and shiny is true love to me, but sometimes it’s fun to play with a matte look.
Have you seen glitter polishes with a matte top coat? They look like sea glass and have a whole other mesmerizing effect!
Perhaps you’re interested in trying the look, but you don’t want to invest yet in a full bottle of a matte polish.
This is where the OPI Matte Top Coat comes in.
You can use it over any of your existing nail polishes, and it gives you the mattified look.
If you use it with a nail striper, you could even create neat effects – like matte tiger stripes over a shiny base.
OPI’s PR has a bottle of this heading my way, so I’ll be sure to try it out and give you a full report in a future review post.
Official press release sent to me by PR:
Matte is the New Black!
Redefine Color with New OPI Matte Top Coat
OPI Matte Top Coat instantly transforms glossy nail lacquer to a matte finish when applied over any OPI hue. Matte Top Coat provides sealing protection, without shine and protects nails from chipping, making manicures last longer. With a matte, transparent finish, Matte Top Coat is designed to leave nails velvety smooth and creates a touchable texture for an edgy appearance.
“A matte finish can be worn over any OPI nail lacquer shade and should be applied after the base coat and primary coats of color to give nails a unique look,” says Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, OPI Co-Founder VP & Artistic Director. “Using Matte Top Coat to transform any shade in your collection makes it a more versatile and budget-friendly way to embrace the matte trend. Give your favorite lacquers an update with a new finish without altering the color.”
Matte Top Coat contains no DBP, Toluene, or Formaldehyde. This product includes OPI’s exclusive ProWide™ Brush for the ultimate in application.
OPI Matte Top Coat will be available April 2013, at Professional Salons and Spas across Canada for $10.95 CAN suggested retail.

Do you dig the matte look? How would you use this matte top coat in nail art? Which nail polish would you wear under this?
maybe with black polish underneath
Hey Icequeen81!
That would look nice and edgy! Maybe it would look like Illamasqua Scorn.
I’ve been using a matte top coat from a different brand for a while as I really love the finish, so I can’t wait to try out OPIs version… especially with a bright glittery polish under it (my favorite: OPI DS Luxurious, I’ve never wore the combination without getting compliments 🙂 )
Hey Joyce!
I’ve gotta try that combination – good idea!
I find it odd that OPI is marketing this as though it were a revolutionary idea. I mean, matte topcoats have been around for years at this point, and mainstream for at least one year.
I wonder what motivated them to try and play this angle? There were so many ways they could have made it sound better without sounding clueless (we’re reinventing the wheel here you know). It’s better than other brands. It’s more matte. It’s more durable. There’s more in the bottle. It dries faster. Any of these would be completely valid marketing techniques. (whether they’re true remains to be seen, but who says adverts are truthful?)

I totally agree with your comment, it’s like they’re pretending that Essie, China Glaze, NYC and even Sinful Colors don’t exist. My best guess is that they’re marketing to the type of women who “only buy OPI.”

Hey Fedoraharp!
A bottle is headed my way, so I’ll find out soon enough and will let readers know! 🙂
Just to clarify- I definitely don’t mean that as an insult to OPI overall. OPI is pretty much my most coveted brand! I’m just a little bemused by their marketing strategy in this case.
Hey Fedoraharp!
Not to worry! 🙂 It’s actually good that you think critically and question things. Keeps the mind sharp and active. (I didn’t perceive your initial comment to be negative. As a nailphile, I understand how you’d think that.)
I think I have four bottles of matte topcoat. lol Always good when more people jump in, though. Still a little skittish over my inability to find crackle for a year or so, thought it was gone forevers! I don’t care how many people are “totally over” something, not being able to find something you used to love is devestating for those of us not over it. :p So, yeah, hurray matte!! LOLZ

I’m sorry to hear about your problems obtaining crackle. If you have access to Sally’s, they will be having a sale this weekend where you should be able to find lots of crackles at 1/2 off.
Turns out my info about the sale at Sally’s sale this weekend was mistaken, there’s no sale this weekend. 🙁 However, if you look around there are still plenty of places to find crackle on clearance, and the 1/2 off Sally’s sale should happen again soon, too.

Hey Lizzy!
Wow, sounds like you REALLY love the matte look!
I just saw this at a couple of nail supply stores when I went shopping yesterday, I had no idea it was a new product! There are so many other matte topcoats out there, I’m really doubtful that OPI has anything new to bring to the table with it, though.

Hey anotherCristina!
Even if it’s the same as the matte top coats from other companies, I’m just glad that they’ll have their own. 🙂
