On a daily basis, I wear eye liner, but usually I use either a gel liner or a pencil eye liner.
But I’ve been curious about trying out a liquid eye liner because unlike gel liner, I don’t need to use a separate brush. And, unlike a pencil eye liner, liquid eye liner is supposed to be more long-lasting and smudge-proof.
The new Milani Ultrafine Liquid Eye Liner in Black Vinyl was the first liquid eye liner I’ve ever tried, and I was excited to put it to the test!
I was concerned about not being able to draw a straight line. Gel and pencil liners are more forgiving because you can go over the same area and fill in parts you missed. But, going into this, I thought that liquid liner was trickier. More on my surprising experience with that in this post!

Milani Ultrafine Liquid Eye Liner Black Vinyl Review
Colour
The Milani Black Vinyl Ultrafine Liquid Eye Liner was a strong black. It wasn’t the blackest eye liner I’ve ever used, but it also wasn’t faint. I got a dramatic line quite easily.
I noticed that sometimes, the line wouldn’t be as dark the first time, so I had to go over the line in some spots twice. This may bother some people, but it didn’t bother me because I tend to go over the same line twice anyway, even when I use gel or pencil liner. It’s just something I’m used to doing, so I don’t find it to be a hassle.
Finish
It certainly lives up to the name because Black Vinyl dries to a shiny, vinyl finish.
This was something that’s new to me because all the liners I’ve used before have been either matte or sparkly, never vinyl. I like the finish!
Application & Formula
The Milani Ultrafine Liquid Eye Liner in Black Vinyl had a watery consistency, which I expected since it is a liquid eye liner. Duh!
I was nervous about trying it because I don’t have the steadiest hands, and I’ve heard some people say that you have to have a steady hand, especially with liquid eye liner.
I’m pleased to report that even as a newbie, I was able to get the line I wanted quite easily! I think it has to do with the brush handle. It’s comfortable to hold, and it’s thin, so it’s not cumbersome. Plus the tip itself is a felt-tip applicator and not a brush. This makes it easier to control.
And you must remember to shake it before using in order to distribute the pigment.
Longevity
I put the liner on in the morning before work and went to check it late at night. I was happy to see that it really lasted. It didn’t look perfect like in the morning, but it did hold up pretty well!
There were some parts (where I went over the line thickly a second time) that cracked a bit. But, I think that if you apply the liner thinly (with practice!), you could avoid this cracking effect.
Waterproof
While wearing this liner, I didn’t cry to test the claim of it being waterproof. Instead, using the swatch on my arm, I ran it under water for a while. It stayed put! It was only when I rubbed it quite a lot that it came off. (You won’t be rubbing your eyelids this much, so it shouldn’t be a concern.)
Smudge-proof
This liner is indeed smudge-proof! After it had dried (it only took a few seconds for the formula to set), I lightly rubbed it. It stayed put. I rubbed a bit harder, and it still stayed put.

Final Verdict: 8/10
Considering that it was my first time trying out a liquid liner, I was really surprised how simple it was to use. I thought for sure my shaky hands would end up drawing a jagged line on my upper eyelids! 😉
I’ll be trying out some of the other colours in this line, and I hope to review another one on here. Keep your eyes peeled like a banana!
Do you wear pencil, gel, or liquid eye liner most days? What colour is your favourite for eye liner? (For me, it’s either turquoise or eggplant.)
not impressed
Hey Icequeen81!
What is/are your favourite eye liner(s)?
These look neat – I’m nervous about the cracking though, LOL! And if you try out the other colours, beware – I’ve heard they stain like crazy!
Hey Angela!
Haha, I think most people won’t apply the liner thick like I did. I’m such a newbie at liquid eye liner. 😛
Oh, thanks for the heads up. I’ll be sure to watch out for that and report if it does stain.
I like the brush end on that. I haven’t used liquid liner in ages and that looks way more manageable than the long skinny brushes.

Hey Lizzy!
It definitely is easier than the long skinny brushes. I think bought one of those kind before, but I was never able to line my eyes properly, so I didn’t go out in public with that. With this Milani liner, haha, I could actually leave the house and not look like I had a duel with my makeup. 😉
