OPI Stay the Night is from the Mariah Carey Collection that features the new Liquid Sand finish.
I wore this to a party in early December, and it received a lot of unsolicited (and very surprising) compliments from people who I thought liked more traditional nail polish! So it’s a winner!
And you’ll remember that I was over the moon about OPI Get Your Number. Well, although Stay the Night is cool and edgy, Get Your Number is still my top pick of the Liquid Sands.
Stay the Night has a gothic feel, and it’s not for someone who wants a typically pretty manicure. It’s for the nailphile who wants something racy and avant-garde.
In this post, you’ll see what it looks like in different lighting conditions and also with a shiny top coat.
But, just like I wrote in my OPI Get Your Number review, I suggest that you wear any Liquid Sand polish without a top coat, at least for a day. You may be pleasantly surprised by how much you like the unique finish!

OPI Stay the Night Review
Colour
Stay the Night by OPI reminds me of a volcano. It looks exactly like one that’s erupting with scorching lava gushing forth!
I couldn’t quite capture how sparkly the red glitter is, unfortunately. In person, it’s dazzling and very bright in contrast to the blackened base.
The more I looked at my nails with this on, the more I thought about hidden rubies. And, then when I gazed upon my nails even more, the base polish started to remind me a little bit of undercooked brownies. Perhaps I was staring too long, and I was getting hungry. 😉
Finish
The finish of Stay the Night is gritty, but not sharp. You may remember that I described OPI Get Your Number’s finish as being a rock-like texture. This also is quite similar, except it didn’t have as much variation in terms of size. You get the glitter and the ‘wet sand’ look. Get Your Number also had other-sized pieces to add more complexity.
Also, the black base in this is pretty opaque as far as I could tell. (Then again, I do wear glasses…) Get Your Number had a jellyish base, which is really unique for this type of matte formula.
You’ll be happy to know that even though this polish looks ridiculously gritty, it comes off easier than you’d think. Just be sure to use a remover that contains acetone (it doesn’t have to be 100% acetone). Keep the cotton pad soaked in the remover on your nail for about 5 seconds and then rub. It’ll come off easily that way.
Application & Formula
This was easy to apply. It went on without a hitch, and it was very opaque. I only needed 2 coats to achieve the opacity you see in my photos.
What It Looks Like With a Shiny Top Coat
I couldn’t resist seeing what the transformation would be with a glossy top coat. Here are two thick coats of Seche Vite Fasty Dry Top Coat.
It’s really pretty, but I feel like the Liquid Sand finish is much more unique. Putting on a top coat transforms it into a beautiful (but ordinary) polish.
Also, be aware that this polish eats up top coat. You’d need to wear at least 2 coats of top coat if you want it to stay smooth and glossy.

Final Verdict: 8/10
This is a pretty special polish, and I love how the red pieces shine through like something fierce. They really pop against the black base!
It’s gothic, edgy, and perfect for the person who wants something different than the general polish offerings.
Which is your favourite of the Liquid Sands? If you could design your own Liquid Sand polish, what would it look like? (Mine would have a dark emerald jelly base with holographic glitter that leans heavily on the purple side – of course!) 😉
This is really pretty. The combo of black and red is perfect!! I would wear it with top coat. I just need a shiny look on my nails!

Hey Marisa!
Aww…but the Liquid Sand texture is something you NEED to experience at least once. 🙂 It’s really like wet sand…so interesting to look at closely.
Wow! I just have to get these! My dream liquid sand polish would be like a creamsicle, orange and white glitter and very fun and summer-y. I’m so excited for these polishes! So cute!

Hey Brianna!
Your dream Liquid Sand polish sounds super cute, and I like how it has a warm-weather vibe. That’s very different than the ones out now. I’d love to see them make something like that.
I know exactly what you mean about the lava thing! That’s pretty much why I want this so badly, it just reminds me of lava turning into rock! To me that is so cool! I’ve been holding off buying this (and Can’t Let Go because I can’t resist a purple) because I’m trying to be good and spend less on nail polish. But every time I see a swatch my willpower gets a little bit weaker. I might just have to go down to Ulta and pick this up today. Hopefully the other three won’t come back with me too. D:

Hey Mariana!
Sometimes ‘just browsing’ nail blogs can be dangerous! At least, that’s what it’s like for me. It can be very hard to resist pretty new polishes and long-time lemmings.
Haha, I have a feeling you may bring Get Your Number back with you, too. (That’s my FAVOURITE of the Liquid Sands because of the shade of blue and the holo.)
The color is really lovely but I don’t know if I’m a fan of the texture. It looks great with the topcoat though!
Hey Karrie!
If you aren’t sure of the texture, I recommend you check out Get Your Number. There’s waaaay more loveliness going on, so it may distract you a little from the texture. However, don’t be surprised if you fall hard for the texture. I wasn’t the biggest fan of mattes or gritty glitters, but Get Your Number converted me for that one.
I juuuuust picked up some of these. This one is the one I’m most excited for…. with good reason! It looks amazing!
Hey Vesna!
Hope you love wearing it as much as I did! Did you also get Get Your Number? Haha, I sound like a broken record, but to me, it’s spectacular. I think it’d look lovely on you!
Lots of folks seem to like these textures…I am not in that camp – sort of like this one with the clear topper. But without it, I think it looks like asphalt with some red something here and there. Not thinking these sands and the other brands with similar textures are for me at all. I did buy 1 of the Soft Textures from Layla – I honestly did not realize it was a texture – I fell for the shade in the bottle and I was in a hurry as well. It’s OK – it’s more like felt and sort of looks like some of my old OPI Suede polishes – but I use a clear topper on it so I don’t feel the felt texture.
Hey beachgal!
Asphalt is actually a really accurate way to describe the finish on Stay the Night! It’s more opaque. If you try Get Your Number, it has an interesting ‘jelly-matte’ finish, and there’s more complex glitter going on. You might like that one better than this.
Going against popular opinion but I think this looks UGLY! Something like burnt sugar left in the bottom of a pot or something. I usually like things that are new and different but this just isn’t for me I guess! 🙁
Hey Aylene!
Yeah, it’s definitely not something that will please everyone. Have you seen Get Your Number? I think it’s a lot prettier than Stay the Night.
Hahahaha, now that you mention burnt sugar, it totally does look like that! 😛
I checked out the colors in the Mariah– display wasn’t completely sold on the sand finish concept. I did buy the Butterfly shade which is really pretty on the hand. Just enough color and shimmer for when you want something neutral but not boring.
Hey Isabella!
A Butterfly Moment is really soft and sweet. 🙂 I agree with you that the shimmery finish keeps it from looking blah.
Aww…are you sure about the Liquid Sands? Did you see Get Your Number? (Hahaha, I talk about that one soooo much. I think it really shows off the best side of the Liquid Sand finish compared to Stay the Night.)
Oh my! That’s amazing!! 😀 The texture looks a bit funky in the extreme close-up, but who’s going to get that close, really? lol Wicked cool.

Hey Lizzy!
Haha, yeah, the texture that close looks a little creepy. If someone came up to my nails with a magnifying glass, I think I’d laugh so hard!
Wearing this right now and I wrote a poem about volcanic ash to go with my blog post. I love the texture and look of this shade.

Hey Saima!
I just read your poem. You are so clever!
Wow this definitely ranks as one of the more unique polishes I’ve ever seen! It looks like it’d be fitting for the holidays, with the red glitter. It also reminds me a lot of Halloween, for some reason

Hey Catherine!
Yes, it was perfect for the holidays, and I can see how it would remind you of Hallowe’en. It has that eerie darkness to it.
If you like this one, you might LOVE Get Your Number (the blue Liquid Sand). 🙂 It’s really complex and beautiful!
Got this on right now and definitely skipping the top coat! It is so gorgeous and unique without it 😀

Hey Anutka!
Yay for being brave to wear it as OPI suggested! 🙂 Glad that you enjoyed the unique finish. I hope they continue to expand the line to include other colours and interesting glitter.
This was the first liquid sand polish I bought and fell in love! I was at Ulta a few weeks ago and I spotted these gems and had to buy one. I’m so glad that Get Your Number was the first one I purchased. It is stunning and definitely one-of-a-kind! I love that it lasts long too. My husband wants me to get this one next, but I’m a little scared that I’ll look “goth-ish.” Haha
Hey Katerina!
Yes, I was really surprised how long it lasted. For some reason, I thought that it would chip really quickly. But it’s rugged! 🙂
Wait…was Stay the Night or Get Your Number the first one you purchased? Both are amazing. Which did you like more?
Get Your Number was my first one. Haha. I re-read what I posted and realized how confused I made it sound. My bad! I <3 liquid sand!!!
Oohhhh! Okay! 🙂 Good choice for your first Liquid Sand!
I ordered this online earlier today and will be receiving it next week so I’m excited~ I fell in love with the liquid sand texture so I decided buying it as soon as I can. 😀 I’m curious to see it under a layer of any matte top coat, though. Just thought it’d look better? (I know it’s matte but it’s still a bit shiny because of the jelly-like texture). Have you tried the combination out? 🙂
Mara Mina recently posted: I finished Portal 2 yesterday and I was in tears during Cara Mia…
Hey Mara Mina!
I’ve never tried it with a matte top coat, so I can’t say. What I will say is that even without a top coat, it wears wonderfully. It was more durable than I thought it would be!
Hmm…I found that Stay the Night didn’t really have that jelly quality. Get Your Number did, though.
Oh my gosh, it’s beautiful! I haven’t tried any of the liquid sand polishes yet but from the few swatches I’ve seen so far, they do look interesting to me.
It’s funny, your idea for your dream liquid polish is almost exactly the opposite of what I would do. I would do a royal purple base with dark emerald holographic glitters with maybe just a hint of red flash here and there.
Thank you for the beautiful swatches Mary!

Hey Angela!
I do hope you’ll try out the Liquid Sands – it’s quite the experience to wear them. And the texture isn’t just like gritty glitter – it’s more complex and refined than that.
Ooohh, I like your dream Liquid Sand polish, too!
