There are so many different kind of puzzles: Sudoku, Cryptogram, Crossword, Word Search, etc. But Jumble puzzles are the ones I love to do the most.
For Jumble puzzles, you unscramble the letters to figure out the words and then unscramble the circled letters from each word to solve a final puzzle that’s often a witty joke.
(Wish I was good at doing crosswords and Sudoku, but I’m not. And I don’t find them as fun or rewarding as Jumbles!)
When I was in a student in university, I did Jumble puzzles nearly every week. I was so obsessed with them that I got my mom addicted to them, too. And, before I knew it, we would be fighting over the Jumble puzzle in the newspaper. 😛
Eventually we ended up doing the Jumbles at the same time. It became our fun little competition to see who could figure out the words and solve the riddle at the end the fastest.
Haha, and later on, I ended up buying the Jumble books so that we could go head-to-head with several puzzles in a row instead of waiting for a new one in each newspaper.
If you haven’t tried any Jumbles yet, give them a go! (Be careful, though, haha, because you may very well become addicted to them like I did!)
Below is one that I haven’t done yet. Have a go at it and see how you fare. 😉
Craving more? I found a website that isn’t the official Jumble website, but it allows you to print out free Jumble-style puzzles in a bunch of different categories.
Do you do any word puzzles? Which ones? How do you whittle away the time spent commuting on public transportation?
Ahhh!!! I freaking love jumbles! My boyfriend and I fight over doing them. He recently bought a whole book full of them and we take turns figuring them out by ourselves…but then we just end up helping each other out haha.
And also my mom has been bringing home the Toronto Star, so my grandfather and I have to try and get it first so that we can finish the jumble first. There has been times when one of us couldnt figure out a word, so we find it lying around and figure out those missing words for each other. It’s so much fun haha
I too, am very terrible at crosswords, but I do love Sudoku and word searches. Keeps the mind sharp….I guess haha
Hey Lawren!
*High-five* Woo hoo – glad that someone else loves Jumbles as much as I do! 🙂 Other than my mom, I don’t know anyone else who’s as addicted to them as I am. Now we can share another obsession other than polish. 😉
Haha, be careful! The Jumble books are hard to put down. When I bought my first one, I think I did 10 of them in a row before I had to force myself to put it away.
Hooray! I’m so surprised by how many people aren’t as addicted as we are! It’s so much fun.
Haha you’re absolutely right! Sometimes I go through 10 or more puzzles in 1 sitting
Once when I went to Montreal with my then-boyfriend, we did so many of the Jumbles. It’s a great way to whittle away the time!
OOh, I love me some Jumbles, but my all-time favorites are crossword puzzles. I don’t get the daily paper, but my 86-year-old upstairs neighbor will often call me to ask for help unjumbling a word. =)

Hey Tonya Kaushik!
Aww…how sweet is it that she’s still keeping her mind sharp with puzzles? That’s so awesome! And it’s nice of you to help her out. Isn’t it great how Jumbles can bring people of all ages together? Fun is fun is fun is fun! It doesn’t matter what generation it is.
Awww! How sweet that you found such a neat way to spend a few moments with your mom.
I wish I was good at these puzzles!!! I am more the Sudoku type, and even have the sudoku apps on my iphone 😉 HUGE fan!
When I used to take the bus (back in the days before I became chauffeur to my preschooler and toddlers), I used to read or listen to music on the bus… back then, I scavenged for newspapers that were catching on to the Sudoku trend 😉

Hey Marta!
You have a lot of patience! I often start the Sudoku and then abandon it halfway. It must be my dislike of numbers…unless they’re growing in my bank account. 😛 Hahahaha!
Ahhhhh…I want to get an iPhone so badly. I’m trying to be good and save up for a bit first, but it’s tough. They’re just so handy, and well, my phone is so ancient and basic. It’s time for an upgrade…
I used to play something similar on the Neopets website when I was younger, and I used to be pretty good at it too! But sadly, it took me a while to even unscramble the 1st word in the one you posted here 😛
Hey Kay!
Ah yes…I remember so many people getting into Neopets. Oddly, I never checked it out, so I couldn’t get addicted to it. 😛
Well, at least you managed to unscramble the first word. 🙂 Some people might not have even tried, so I’m happy to hear that you put in the effort. 😀
My grandma (who lives about 1000 miles away from me) does these every day in her small town newspaper and when I go to visit her every summer she always asks me for my help cuz I LOVE puzzles like this. I ONLY do them when I’m with her tho. 🙂 I can’t wait to go back and see her this summer 😀

Hey Nicole!
That’s sweet how you can share something like this with your grandma. I think it makes the experience more enjoyable when you aren’t doing things just on your own.
Hahahahaha that’s too cute 🙂
(Had to look up what suturing meant to be able to figure it out though 😉 )
Thanks for giving me something to do when I would otherwise be bored at work 😀
Hey Erica!
See, that’s the cool thing about Jumble puzzles – a lot of times you even learn new words! 🙂 Educational AND fun! That’s a win-win for me.
Hahaha, just don’t tell your boss that you were unscrambling words at work. 😛
Oh man! You just took me back to Sunday mornings in High School!! My Nana and PawPaw used to sit at the kitchen table all morning drinking coffee and reading the paper. My Nana specifically did the Jumble and the Crossword while PawPaw did the number box thingy (I dont know the official name but it was similar to Sudoku) and checked the sports scores. What a great memory to revisit, thanks! 🙂

Hey ManiCuriously!
You’re very welcome – It’s fun to know that I’m not alone in loving Jumbles! It seems like other than my mom, in real life, I don’t know anyone who’s as into them as I am.
I’ve never tried these but I love word puzzles! Especially those ones where you have to figure out how one word transforms to another in a set number of steps, with each step allowing only 1 letter to be changed to form the next word. I’m not very good at crossword puzzles either but Sudoku or Word Find is something I can spend hours doing. I usually just spend the waiting time reading. 🙂

Hey Carmela!
They should do a Hunger Games version of these Jumble puzzles. Haha, then you’d try them…stat! 😛

Hey Alex!
I’m not sure about ordering from The Star, but the official Jumble website has a shop where you can find links to places online that you can order the books from: http://jumble.com/products/category/11
