Dear Winter,
Sorry, but I have a soft spot for Fall and Summer.
I give you major kudos for hosting big holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Eve, though. They’re always huge hits! (People keep talking about them around the water cooler.)
I know that it’s really stressful and that you’re always so accommodating.
You make having snowball fights possible. Children thank you for school snow days. And I can’t ignore how artistic you are at painting a magical scene where the ground twinkles. (You really have a gift!)
But people feel that you often give them the cold shoulder when they try to warm up to you. We try to be your friend, but, sometimes it’s hard…like ice.
Now, I’m not asking you to change. You have so much going for you! All I’m asking is that you don’t blow snow in my face and that you don’t send a cold gust of wind up my jacket as I’m waiting for the streetcar. Once I’m inside and toasty, feel free to have a fiesta!
Your friend always,
Mary
P.S. No, I wasn’t talking to my Slatkin & Co. Winter Candle. I was talking to the season. That doesn’t make it any better, does it? 😉

Slatkin & Co. Winter Candle Review
Fragrance
If you’ve poked around at my other candle reviews, you’ll realize that this isn’t a fragrance that I’m usually drawn to. Bakery-type scents or cinnamon-pumpkin ones drive my nose crazy in the best possible way.
But when Bath & Body Works was having a sale and I swung by their store (which is usually dangerous for my wallet), I randomly picked up the Slatkin & Co. Winter Candle. (As I wrote in a previous post, I’m that person who smells tons of candles every time I go.)
To my surprise, I found myself falling in love with this crisp scent that wasn’t sweet or gourmand! It made me do a double sniff. Then another sniff. After that point, I looked around nervously before I gave it yet another sniff. (Maybe the wax was laced with something else…)
It’s difficult for me to describe this scent because I’m not as familiar with the notes, but I’ll do my best.
The most prominent note to me is the clove with a mix of bay leaf (but just a smidgeon), and I think that’s why I was drawn to it. It’s spicy and festive, but it isn’t cinnamon, which is more common.
After smelling it more thoughtfully (remember, I sniffed it several times like a weirdo), I could smell a touch of the pine. That also gives it a distinctly winter smell, and I think the name of this candle suits it perfectly.
This candle definitely makes me think of cold weather when the air’s fresh, but inside, you have something baking in the oven.
As for the woodsy scent, it’s there slightly, but it doesn’t seem as prominent like fresh balsam. Although there’s pine, I wouldn’t classify this fragrance as a green scent. It’s crisp, spicy, yet cozy without being heavy or sweet – very comforting!
Scent Throw
Upon just a few minutes of burning it, I could already easily detect the fragrance in the room. It’s of moderate strength, so even though it works well in a small room, it also worked nicely in a larger area.
Burning
I was extremely pleased with the performance of the Slatkin & Co. Winter Candle! It had the thick white wicks, which burned strongly and consistently even the very first time I lit it. (The first time, I used it for 3 hours straight – and there were zero hiccups in performance during that time!)
The wax burned evenly and cleanly, so there was no tunnelling. This means that there’s no wasted wax like candles you sometimes get where only the middle seems to melt into a pool of wax, but the sides remain solid.
Seasonal Availability
This one is only around for the winter, which makes sense. Haha, I can’t see myself wanting to burn this in the summer! Now, I haven’t paid attention to these type of scents before, so I’m not sure if the Winter candle is a recurring seasonal scent or not. (If you know, please let me know in the comments!)
Edit: One of my kind readers informed me that this is a recurring scent! YAY! So it should be back again next year. Good news!

Final Verdict: 9.5/10
If you want a candle that strays from your usual sweet offerings, I strongly suggest you give the Slatkin & Co. Winter Candle a try! It could pleasantly surprise you like it did for me.
This is perfect for those who want to experiment with a candle that has some pine notes, but who don’t want a straight-up pine or green scent.
What candle have you tried that surprised you? Are you a fan of tree scents? Do you enjoy the aroma of cloves?
I don’t really know what this smells like because usually I have smelled the candlees you reviewed already. Based on y0our description it looks like a warm welcoming scent.
Hey maddy!
Yes, it’s very welcoming and it’s just perfect for when the weather’s cold outside. It has just the right hint of pine without being a candle that’s ALL about trees. If you sniff it at the store, please let me know if you like or dislike it. I’m curious since we usually seem to like similar candle scents.
I came back from Bath and Body Works a couple of minutes ago for some last minute Christmas shopping for my friends (I bought mini fragrance sprays) and when I smelled this, I loved it. It smells very welcoming and I thought I must buy this because my family and I will be having a Christmas party soon and this is a great scent that will welcome our guests.
Wow, we REALLY share the same taste in scented candles. Don’t think we ever disagreed yet about one!
That’s so nice of you to get the mini sprays for your friends. I’m sure that they’ll enjoy them. Which scents did you get?
I got 1 Sweet Pea because it’s a classic and people tend to love it. I also got 1 Vanilla Bean Noel (for myself), 1 Warm Vanilla Sugar, 1 Pink Sugarplum, 1 Winter Candy Apple, 1 Secret Wonderland, 1 Be Enchanted and 1 Charmed Life. I also got 1 Japanese Cherry Blossom for my Japanese obsessed best friend. It was a 3 for $10 sale so I got 9 while only spending $30 which is a pretty good deal and minis are good to go anywhere (especially are gym bags because we have gym first period on Mondays).
By the way, have you been to B&BW lately because they have $1 minis for their new tropical collection coming out in January I think. They have like a coconut, mango and berry scent. About liking the same candle scents, I think it’s because we like sweet, warm, bakery scents and warm, pumpkin scents. I like bakery type scents and sweet scents because I love baking and sweets so instead of actually eating too much sweets I could just smell one and it relaxes me kind of.
No, I haven’t been to the store in maybe a week. At that time, I didn’t see their new minis on display yet. The mango one sounds interesting, and it’s probably the only one out of the three that I would want to smell. (Coconut-scented things sometimes make me feel ill, and berry scents are something too strong for me and give me a headache.)
Did you smell the new fragrances? I wonder how close the new mango one is to the old Bali Mango. (I still have a few mini bottles of that one.)
The mango one is actually Bali Mango. The berry one is Rio Rumberry, and the coconnut one is Aruba Coconut. Was this an old collection before?
Yes, Bali Mango came out in this year’s spring collection…along with Fuji Passionfruit and Hawaii Coconut. Hmm…wonder if Aruba Coconut will smell like Hawaii Coconut.
First period is gym? Wow…I don’t know if I’d like that. The last thing I’d want to do in the morning at school is have to run around…haha! But it’s actually good to raise your energy levels.
It does raise your energy levels but it leaves you hot and sweaty for a looooong time. Merry Christmas!
Hahaha, yeah, I know! It must be a bit uncomfortable heading to your next class.
Merry Christmas! 🙂
This is one that comes back seasonally. I have seen it for at least a few years now 🙂 I love it!
Okay, that’s great to know! 🙂 So now I don’t have to hoard even more. (I’ll update the post to reflect this piece of information – thanks!)
Sometimes clove reminds me of the dentist but I do like it. I have burned this candle before but in the single wick version and do enjoy it, but it is not one I’m crazy about. Bath and Bodyworks Spice is their winter scent I go crazy for!
Hey Barbara!
Really? Does your dentist’s office smell like clove, or does your dentist wear clove fragrance? That’s interesting. My dentist’s office doesn’t really smell like anything nice. I wish!
I haven’t tried Spice, but I’ll definitely sniff it in the store based on your recommendation. 🙂
OK-my brain is really in menopause mode today!! I just went to the basement looking for some Christmas decorations and found 3 Winter candles (last year’s version ) so I must have liked it . I smelled it and went OMG!!I DO LOVE this scent.! Bonus- I have 3 candles I didn’t know I had!
I’m 51 so the clove/dentist thing is kind of a bad association. People used to use clove oil as a toothache cure! It would kind of numb the pain.
SCORE! That’s awesome how you found those 3 candles. Hehe, they can run, but they can’t hide! 😛 (Okay, candles can’t actually run, but work with me.)
Interesting – I had no idea about clove oil being used to ease toothaches! If it works, that’s good because it’s natural. Now there are so many weird chemicals on the market.
This candle sounds delightful! 😀

Hey Ashesela!
It definitely puts you in the winter/holiday spirit. 🙂 What candle do you reach for when you want a change of pace?
I love the scent of this candle, and would like to purchase another one, but can’t find it anywhere. Is there somewhere I could order it online?

Thankyou in advance for your information.
