Hope it doesn’t bother you too much that I was holding this bottle upside down for one photo. I was playing around. π
If you follow me on Twitter, you may have seen my tweet about how Essie polishes are now on sale at two etailers for just $4 USD! Looks like it’s only valid until the end of this month.
Essie nail polish in Canada is pretty pricey. At Shoppers, I’ve seen it for $11.99 CAD! I can never justify that…unless it’s a flakie or holo.
Needless to say, I haven’t purchased a new bottle of Essie for quite some time. But when I happened to stumble across this incredible sale, I finally bought all the colours I had my eye on for the longest time.
Essie has really stepped up their game over the past couple of years! π I’m impressed!
The new Essie Winter Collection 2011 was available already, so I picked up Essie Bangle Jangle, a moody grayish purple that I’ve been really enjoying!

Essie Bangle Jangle Review
Colour
The sun didn’t come out when I wore Bangle Jangle by Essie, so unfortunately I wasn’t able to show you what it looks like in direct sunlight.
The colour is a grayed out, putty-like lavender with a touch of blue.Β There’s a lot of moodiness to it – picture my photos in natural light but with more gray. It looks like a great wearable neutral that still manages to be edgy at the same time. It goes with a lot of other colours, so I think I lot of people would like it.
If you have fairer skin than I do, I can see how it could read more like a pastel lavender on you.Β I’m glad that wasn’t the case because I already have a pastel purple I love – OPI Do You Lilac It?.
The cool thing about Bangle Jangle is that in natural light, it looks purple with some gray, but then in dim light, it can look more gray with a hint of purple. Hues that change like this (even if it’s a slight change) are really intriguing to me.
Finish
Bangle Jangle by Essie has a creme finish.
Application & Formula
The formula was highly pigmented. The first coat was almost opaque by itself, but definitely needed a second coat.
The polish was on the thicker side, but not goopy like glue. I think the thickness was the result of it having so much pigment in it. Because of this formula, it was easy to control and I got great colour payoff.

Final Verdict: 8.5/10
I’m so glad that I bought Bangle Jangle because I’m a huge fan of grayish purples. If you’re looking for a colour that’s work-appropriate and that still has an edge, this is it!
Do you like the jangle of bangles? What’s your favourite shade that Essie has ever made? Are you also a fan of smoked out purples?
We can’t get Essie that easily here – and I prolly won’t buy any either especially since nailpolishes don’t last me very long – maximum 4h if I’m lucky – my nails just don’t take it whatever nailpolish I wear – so if I wear it I usually wear a cheaper one like Catrice or Gosh.
About the color I really love – especially when the color changes in diff kinds of light – I find it very intriguing.
Hey Elyne!
It’s too bad that you can’t get Essie there. Have you tried switching up your base and top coats? I find that longevity often depends more on those (for me) than on the actual polish! (Ohhh…Catrice and Gosh have some beautiful colours! Great choices.)
I actually didn’t realize you were holding it upside down till I read that part. π
Isn’t the price discrepancy just ridiculous? As much as I like the color of this one, $11.99 is just too much. Love how it looks on your nails tho! I don’t think I can pull off a color like this. I tend to shy away from pastel-ish colors because they tend to make my hands look dirty. To me, at least. I don’t own a lot of Essies either, but my fave of the lot is Going Incognito, a dark bluish green shade. π

Hey Carmela!
Yes, the price is insanely high here. I never would’ve bought it if not for the $4 sale. But I’m glad I did get it and stocked up on so many other Essie colours. And the Essie bottle looks really cute yet elegant. π (A superficial reason, I know…)
Going Incognito looks really pretty! You’ll have to show it off on your blog. π
Ooooh Real pretty. I can see myself wearing this shade!
I tend not to buy a lot of Essie bc of the thin brush and my wide nailbeds… And because of the aforementioned price! :S
But this is real nice!
So now I have to know !!! How did that bottle come to be upside down π ?
Marta recently posted: Pink Poppy
Hey Marta!
I can see this shade on you, too! π And I can picture all the pretty nail-art designs you would come up using it.
Yeah, Essie polishes tend to have narrower brushes. I’m okay using most brushes because my fingers are TINY. Honestly, if you saw me in person, you probably would comment on how little my hands and fingers are. I also have small feet, so it’s in proportion, thankfully! π
Today I went to Rexall and looked at the Essies. They’re only $9.99 CAD there. Shoppers is really crazy with their $11.99 CAD price. Then again, Shoppers tends to be more expensive, I find.
Haha, well, the bottle wanted to do cartwheels and flips. It looked like it was having a good time, and I didn’t want to spoil the fun. π
Whoa I didn’t realize that it was even upside down! How trippy haha
That price is RIDICULOUS. I’m really lucky that I live near a wholesale nail supply so I can get Essie for around 3.25… no shipping either! But I’ve avoiding them because 2 out of the 3 colours I’ve purchased come out completely different than the bottle colour, and the colours tend to be sheer or boring when I try them out :/ But this looks interesting, perfect for fall!
Hey lulu!
Haha, I bet that’s the first time Essie polishes have been described as trippy! π I agree with you that a lot of their shades tend to be sheer or really plain. Over the past few years, I’ve noticed that they’re starting to branch out more with blues, greens, and greiges. I’m all for that! Plus you can’t forget about the neon polishes they did a while back – that blew my mind that they’d go that far out of their comfort zone. Loved it and bought a bunch of them! I really hope they continue to break more colour boundaries.
Yes, the price is ridiculous, but hmm…Shoppers is more expensive than other drugstores, I guess. Just saw Essies going for $9.99 CAD (regular price).
Out of curiosity, which 3 colours did you try?
I had to go check my stash hehe— So the three I own are Essie Marshmallow (which is a nice soft white), Van D’go, and Tart Deco. The latter two look like pinks in the bottle but come out more like neon orange and coral. They are not bad colours just not what I had been looking for at all :/
By the way, random but I bought Vodka and Cavier after reading your review and I love it! It’s so classy looking I wore it for a week which is a record for me nowadays. So many lemmings thanks to your blog!
Essie Marshmallow has such a cute name. Maybe I’ll get that. (I named my teddy bear, Marshmallow, when I was a kid.)
Yay! I’m glad you’re also loving OPI Vodka & Caviar! Gorgeous red jelly polish. π You know me, I don’t go gaga over a red unless it’s special.
What a pretty color. I don’t have very many essie’s because of their crazy prices. A local beauty store sells OPI for 5.99 ea so that’s all I mainly have. I might have to try out some of those etailers. Is shipping reasonable? I hate how some websites charge you wayyy too much for shipping. Almost to the point where there’s no reason to purchase online.
Hey Vivian!
See? I hope that Essie reads all our feedback. We would buy their polish more if their prices were more reasonable. And now that they’re coming out with better colours, we’d be even more inclined to buy them at a respectable price.
Wow, OPI for $5.99 is great. π
I get a lot of my polishes from etailers. The shipping is only reasonable if you’re buying a LOT in one order. If not, it’s a huge rip-off for Canadians. These days, I’ve been sending my orders to my favourite American enabler, and then when he comes to visit, he just brings them up. π I’m really lucky to have this connection. Very dangerous, too, though.
Sometimes, though, I’ll still ship orders from American etailers to myself here in Canada if I really want to wear a polish soon. Sometimes I sacrifice the higher price just because it’s hard for me to find new China Glaze, Orly, and some other collections in stores. Plus, etailers normally get all the stuff early, and I like to be ‘on top of it’…haha, even if I don’t wear them immediately. Oh, I’m so bad! π
That’s awesome having someone bring up polish for you! My parents live in the states, but I can never use that to my advantage because my mother knows about my nail polish fetish and nags me 24/7 whenever I’m down there. The most I can do is smuggle a few into my purse without her knowing π
I wonder why Essie is so pricey… and they don’t go on sale as often as their revlon and sally hansen counter buddies. I think I will have to keep a list of Essie colors and then once I have a large enough list I’ll do a big order online.
btw where in Canada do you live? if you don’t mind me asking
Haha, smuggling polish! I love it! I’m in Ontario. π
YOU HAVE PERFECT NAILS!! I love this color but I’m on a no-buy, but now I pretty much have to get it…
Please do a tutorial or a tip post, I don’t know, SOMETHING about how you got your nails how they are. I am so jealous, they are gorgeous and perfect.
I’m new to your blog but really loving it so far!
Hey Emma!
Welcome to my blog! π Thank you for leaving a comment.
Oh my gosh! *Blushes* I think they’re far from perfect, but your comment made me realllly happy! *Puffs out chest and looks all smiley faced*
I really don’t do anything special and I’m lazy about shaping them. But I always make sure to wear a base and top coat with polish. That protects the nail and your manicure. I’m not sure if I could really contribute anything about nail care, but I’ll try to think of what to include in a tips post. If I have enough content to include, I’ll post it. π
Hey Mary,
Browsing your blog again π I just wanted to let you know that in WalMarts in Ontario (not sure where you are) they have Essie polishes on usually for $7.99-$8.99. I have also spied them in Winners. Not sure if it was a one-time thing, but if you have one near by, you should definitely check it out! They were $4.99-$5.99 there I think.
I love Essies polishes – I have one colour and their “Good to Go” top coat, and they are both awesome! My fiancΓ© doesn’t think I need anymore polish though.. buuuut I just may have to go get a couple more π
Hey Erica!
Thanks for coming back and leaving another comment! π I love engaging with my readers, so I hope you do it again soon. π
Luck you! I never see Essie polishes at my local Winners. However, I did see Orlys, which I was excited about!
Hahaha, maybe try painting his nails one day. He might change his mind. Haha, or not. π But, regardless, it’ll be fun!
