There’s so much hype surrounding argan oil and its benefits for the hair that in order for you to have not heard about it, you’d have to be living under a rock the size of The Situation’s ego!

While there are a variety of argan oil treatments on the market, I was most excited to try the original MoroccanOil Oil Treatment.

Even though I picked up a small 25 mL bottle of Moroccan oil maybe half a year ago, I only started trying it this month.

I must say that it does make my hair feel smoother and look silkier without leaving behind sticky residue, so it gets the thumbs up from me.

The price, however, is pretty high, so I’m using it sparingly – but it still works impressively even in small doses!

Let me tell you a little more about what I think of the MoroccanOil treatment.

Fragrance

Fragrance is a really important factor for me when it comes to determining if I’ll like a haircare product. My nose is sensitive, and if the scent lingers on my hair and close to my face all day long, it had better be pleasant or it’s a deal-breaker. Strong perfume-y fragrances that smell like salon chemicals really turn me off.

The Moroccan oil treatment for all hair types has a scent that I find very difficult to describe. It doesn’t smell like the salon to me. It also doesn’t smell like perfume.

It has an odd natural scent, but in a way, it smells like mild medicine to me. I imagine this is what the argan tree smells like even though I really have no idea.

When you smell it from the bottle, it’s very strong. On your hair, there’s a faint smell that I don’t really notice after a short while. It’s not an unpleasant smell, but it’s just not a smell that I love. It’s…tolerable.

I’ve never tried any other kind of argan oil, so I can’t say if this is a typical scent or not.

Consistency & Colour

You would think that because it’s oil that it would feel really greasy on your hands and in your hair. But it’s not! It feels like a thicker oil in your hands, but when you put it in your hair, your hair doesn’t feel like a nasty greaseball. Just be careful not to use too much!

The Moroccan oil itself is a very sheer orange-y yellow that isn’t exactly the most appealing.

Application

The directions on the bottle recommend using this on damp hair, so that’s exactly what I did. After washing, conditioning, and towel-drying my hair, I apply some (about the size of a quarter) on the palm of my hand. Then I rub my hands together before applying the Moroccan oil treatment through my ends and then I work my way up. (The ends of your hair tend to be dryer, especially if you flat iron it daily like I do, so that’s why it’s better to work bottom to top.)

Although applying the oil onto damp tresses is the most effective method, you can also use a bit on dry hair to tame flyaways. I tend to do this as well and have had great results.

Does It Leave Behind Any Residue, Greasiness, or Stickiness?

It doesn’t feel greasy or sticky at all on my damp hair or after drying and styling my hair. I can run my fingers through my hair and I don’t notice any residue. My hair just feels smoother, slicker, and healthier.

Efficacy

The oil treatment by MoroccanOil definitely works and lives up to the hype. It makes my hair look conditioned without being greasy (as long as I didn’t apply too much), and the results last up until my next shampoo.

Does It Combat Humidity?

When it’s humid outside, my hair tends to soak up the moisture and get frizzy. Using the argan oil definitely helps keep my hair looking better for longer, but my hair’s so annoying and stubborn that it eventually will frizz up no matter what I do.

Price

For this tiny bottle, it already had a high price tag, so yes, it’s very expensive. But if you want a good product that works, I think it’s worth the investment.

I know that there’s an alternative brand sold at Sally Beauty Supply that’s also argan oil and that seems to work well for lots of people. It’s much cheaper, but I’ve never tried it. If you have, please leave a comment to let me and my readers know about your experience with it.

Packaging

The Moroccan oil treatment comes in a dark amber/brownish glass bottle. This is probably to keep the product fresher for longer.

Make sure you check out the expiration date on the bottom of the bottle at the back. Mine’s good until 2013, so I have a couple of years to use it up. The last thing you’d want is to invest in a huge bottle and realize that you need to use it up too soon. Plus expired product may not work as effectively…or the smell could get worse.

Ingredients

Although argan oil is in this product (obviously), I found it interesting how there are silicone ingredients listed first. I have no qualms about putting it in my hair, but since I know there are some people who are really against it, I thought I should mention this because it could be a deal-breaker for you.

I really love the way it makes my hair look and feel, but I docked marks for the odd smell and the high price tag. I’ll be using this pretty often since I appreciate how there’s no residue – that’s huge for me.

Edit: I’ve actually grown to LOVE the unusual way it smells, and I now upgrade the Final Verdict score to 10/10 – perfect! 🙂
