If there’s one thing that really puts me in a sour mood, it’s having dry lips. I’m a bit of a lip-balm addict. I always have some on hand to keep my lips soft and hydrated.
For years, I relied on the Shaklee Lip Protection Stick SPF 15. I literally bought 6 tubes of this at a time whenever I would order it. Then Shaklee discontinued this amazing product. I was floored because nothing else worked as effectively as this.
All the drugstore brands felt waxy, too thin, too thick, or even drying. I was getting frustrated trying out so many lip balms and being disappointed by their performance.
Then I heard rave reviews about the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 Natural Mint. Since I had nothing to lose, I gave it a whirl.
And thank goodness! While I still miss my Shaklee lip balm, the Jack Black lip balm is a good replacement, and I dig how it has a higher SPF level. It’s my new holy grail lip balm!

Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 Natural Mint Review
Scent
Natural Mint is very refreshing and a nice pick-me-up. It’s cooling and has a slight tingle. There’s also a minty aroma that you get to enjoy.
But don’t lick it. I don’t usually do this with my lip balms, but for the sake of this review, I purposely did it…and let me tell you, it tastes gross. Just don’t do it! π
Moisturizing Efficacy
When you slick this on, it instantly smoothes my lips, soothes them, and makes them feel extremely hydrated. I love the way this feels.
But what’s more important is that this moisturizing effect lasts a long time. If I don’t eat or drink anything, I don’t need to reapply this for about 3-4 hours! And even when those 3-4 hours are up and the Jack Black balm is wearing off, my lips are left feeling soft and supple. That tells me this balm truly works and isn’t just coating my lips.
Consistency
The lip balm itself is a clear gel and leaves a slight sheen on your lips. It’s not greasy like Vaseline (which I really can’t stand because it makes me feel like I just ate fried chicken and rubbed it all over my lips). It’s a slightly thicker consistency. And when you rub your lips together (which I tend to do), your lips feel really smooth and not at all sticky.
Sun Protection
I absolutely adore how this baby has a high SPF level. It’s not easy to find a nourishing lip balm with SPF 25. I really appreciate how I can get the moisture my lips need and the sun protection, too.
Application & Packaging
The packaging is simple and unisex, which I like. Now, normally I’m a sucker for cute packaging, but this product doesn’t need any bells and whistles. The fact that it works wonders does enough screaming on its own. π
I also like how it has a plastic slanted-tip applicator – makes it more hygienic instead of a stick tube where you put your lips directly on the product over and over again. At least with this, you just squeeze only what you need (which is a little bit, since it goes a long way). The rest stays inside the tube.
Animal-Friendliness
The Jack Black lip balm is cruelty-free, so rest easy, my fellow animal lovers! π

Final Verdict: 10/10
I’m a big believer after having tried the Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 in Natural Mint. It does everything I want it to do – moisturize, add a bit of a sheen, and keep my lips soft. I also like how it’s not overpriced. I highly recommend this if you want to keep your lips in tip-top condition!
Do you prefer lip balm or lip gloss? What’s your favourite lip balm and why? Have you tried any Jack Black products?
Jack Black lip balm is for sure my favorite! It is by far the best I’ve ever tried. I do wish this lip balm was more available too but that is my only complaint. Glad to know you enjoyed it too!
On another note I truly hate when companies discontinue great products. I never tried the Shaklee lip balm but it sounds amazing! Hope the Jack Black lip balm is a good replacement!

Hey Katie!
Glad that you’re loving it a lot, too! It took me a while to catch wind of it and then finally track it down to try it. But it was definitely worth the effort considering how well it works – definitely an awesome replacement for my discontinued Shaklee lip balm. I’m just thankful that I didn’t waste anymore time and money trying stuff that doesn’t work. When it comes to lip balm, I’m pretty loyal when I find something that works like a charm, so now I’m set!
I’m not surprised that you haven’t tried the Shaklee lip balm – it was only available for sale online, and the company itself specializes more on vitamins and healthful/environmentally-friendly products. While they do have a cosmetics line, I don’t think it’s very popular, so it made sense that they whittled it down. Heh, I used to think that I was the only person buying that lip balm. It was like a secret holy grail product and only about $4 or $5 CAD per stick.
I’ve been curious about this since I’ve seen pretty good reviews (even celeb recos!) and I really like that spf rating. π I don’t like the price tho; I can get double the amount of product for a dollar more with Kiehl’s lip balm but I guess you’re paying for the additional sunscreen.
Does it have any sort of scent? Also, I used to think this was Jack Black’s (aka Nacho Libre, etc) cosmetic line. π Hahahaha!
Hey Carmela!
Oh? I haven’t seen the celebrity recommendations. I’m curious – which celebrities?
Yes, the high SPF level is definitely a plus – it was definitely a selling factor for me. But what was the most important for me was that it felt good on my lips even after it wore off. My lips could feel dry before, but this completely heals them. Doesn’t feel like it’s just sitting on top like a gross layer.
Hmm…I actually don’t mind the price. The Shaklee one I used before was a little less, but it only had SPF 15. And all the drugstore brands I’ve tried that were cheaper (like Blistex, Chapstick, Vaseline, Softlips, etc.) all didn’t work even close to how good Jack Black works for me. But everyone’s lips are different, I guess. Some people are in love with those brands.
How does the Kiehl’s lip balm work for you? I’ve never tried anything from Kiehl’s.
The Natural Mint (or ‘Original’) one definitely smells like mint. It reminds me a bit of the mint from those chocolate-mint sticks. When you put it on, you can smell it and your lips get this cooling effect. But after you’ve worn it for a while, you can’t really smell it anymore, and the slight tingling effect wears off.
Haha, I used to also think that it was the celebrity’s line, too. π
I forget which celebs they were. Could’ve been models tho. Sorry, I’ll let you know if I see the article again. π
That’s exactly what I look for in a lip balm: the fast healing and no goopy feeling. I have pretty dry lips too, so I’m never without a lip balm in my purse. The best I’ve tried are the Kiehl’s one (I get the plain one [lip balm #1] since like Claudia G said, the flavors are more for scent and I don’t really need scent for a lip balm) and the Vichy Lipidiose lip balm which is a must have during the drier winter months. The Kiehl’s one feels almost creamy when you put it on with the only con being it doesn’t have that slant applicator so I actually put a small amount on my finger and then apply it to my lips. Not always sanitary. The Vichy one is a stick form (I still have one I purchased a couple years ago so it’s in the packaging where you just push a knob on the side up to open the top and push the balm stick up in one motion. Pretty handy since you can do it one handed and even with gloves on! ;)) and it has a bit more of a slick texture but not the sticky kind. More like you put on a bit of butter on your lips, but not for long as it sinks into your skin.
If Jack Black’s works as good as Vichy during winter, I’d trade up for the spf. π I’m definitely picking this up on my next Sephora run. π
Do you remember if the celebrity/model was a male or female? I keep thinking that more women rave about this product than men, and it was originally designed for men! π We’re taking over!
Most days my lips aren’t dry, but I’m kind of obsessed with having super-conditioned lips. Maybe it’s an addiction to lip balm…haha! But even if my lips feel normal, I want them to feel even better. (The grass is always greener on the other side…)
I’m pretty weird about lip balms that come in tubs. I buy them, but I never finish them because I always get grossed out when I think about how I keep dipping my finger into the same pot. Tubes (stick or squeeze) are my favourites.
Oh yeah…I remember seeing Vichy Lipidose at the store, but I’ve never tried it so I can’t compare. Considering how moisturizing Jack Black is, I’d be shocked if it didn’t hold a candle to Vichy. When you try it later, I’d love to hear your thoughts on how they compare.
Definitely female! That much I remember. π
Will definitely let you know. I’ll even do it during winter for maximum chappy lips. π
Awesome – I’m looking forward to hearing your results. My prediction is that Jack Black will pass with flying colours.
I ADORE ‘Kiehl’s Lip Balm #1’! It’s MY holy grail lip balm! When Oprah had it on her “My Favorite Things” episode many years ago I decided to try it because it was one of the only things on her list that I could afford! LOL Anyway, it comes in different (so called) flavors-which really aren’t flavored but have a great scent. It doesn’t have as much SPF as Jack Black so be aware of that. It is also petrolaum based which you may want to keep in mind.
Hey Claudia!
Hehe, their “#1” lip balm is your favourite lip balm – I like that. Appropriately titled.
Would you say it goes on thinly or thickly?
Good question Mary.
I’d have to say it goes on pretty thinly. It’s not thick like a typical lip gloss so I add an extra layer before bed. IF you decide to try it let us know – I might have to give Jack Black a try.
For sure – if I try it, I’ll review it. π
Ooooh I’ve been really tempted to try Jack Black lip balms for the longest time! Well now I HAVE to, seeing as you gave it such a great review! π Thanks for another detailed and useful review! π
Hey Ruthe!
You’re very welcome! π I’m happy to help, and I truly believe in this product. You’re going to love it! I’m curious now to try out all the other scents.
You can also purchase it on Beauty.com or Skinstore.com, etc. They’re quite popular around
Hey Alesso!
Thanks for letting me and my readers know. Great that there are more avenues to purchase this amazing lip balm. π
Have you tried the lip balms by The Body Shop? They work quite well and use natural ingredients too. The Born Lippy lip balms work well, and I like the cocoa butter lip care stick!! I also like L’Occitane’s shea butter lip balms. They work well!!
Hey Ella!
I tried those balms mannnnnnnnny years ago. I think I tried one of the potted balms in the 90s. I’m sure that they’ve reformulated them after all this time and improved them.
Thanks for those other suggestions! π
Jack Black lip balm is for sure my favorite! It is by far the best Iβve ever tried. I do wish this lip balm was more available too but that is my only complaint
