Ever since I gave in and purchased my first elf Cosmetics product, I’ve been on a mission. This line is so affordable that it has me in jaw-dropped disbelief, and I want to find out how much product quality is sacrificed for a low price tag.
A lot of the products are quite hit and miss, brushes especially. I’m in love with most of their nail polishes, and some of their mineral eyeshadows have my approval and some with disapproval. This is the first time I’ve tried their pigmented shadows. And since there weren’t a lot of colors to choose from, I went with a trusty purple.

elf Passionate Purple Pigment Eye Shadow Review
Color
I personally don’t find elf Passionate Purple Pigment Eye Shadow super unique. It’s a pretty purple: it reminds me of grape-juice boxes. In some light, there’s a bit of a blue-purple sheen to it. This is more apparent in the swatches, but in real life, the sheen is hardly noticeable.
Passionate Purple looks very similar to the swatches on the elf website. But I’ve read that it’s not the case for other colors and that the names of the other colors could be misleading. Sorry, this is the only shade I own (as of now, at least), so I can’t swatch the other colors for you (yet)!
Consistency & Application
e.l.f. Passionate Purple Pigment Eye Shadow is ultra smooth, and the powder is finely milled. And it goes on evenly and not blotchy at all. I didn’t experience a lot of fallout with this, either. The application process is really hassle-free.
It comes with a teeny-tiny, itsy-bitsy brush. I don’t have a lot of lid space, and still it took a few strokes before I could get shadow on my entire eye with the lil’ brush. I guess it’s good for traveling with, but where would you put it? There’s a space in the box that it comes in, but it’s cumbersome to bring the entire box.
So to sum it up: the brush is kind of useless. It’s got soft bristles though that won’t poke at your skin.
Pigmentation
Does it live up to the name of Pigment Eyeshadow? Hmmm. I would say yes. On its own, it doesn’t, but wear a primer underneath, and you really do get incredible color payoff with this shadow. I don’t need a lot of product in order to get the final color that I want.
Lasting Power
Make sure you have your favorite primer handy. We’ve got a fader and creaser on our hands (or rather, on our eyes). It doesn’t stay put well, but if you have a good primer on, it’ll last you the entire day. Although, I’ve tried it on top of UDPP Eden, and it faded and creased as well. I’ve actually noticed Eden isn’t good for me when it comes to powder shadows. On top of Too Faced Shadow Insurance, it took me until the wee hours of the night without budging.
Packaging
Be careful – it explodes. Well, not quite kaboom, but there’s a danger of the shadow flying everywhere. Maybe it’s just mine, but the lid gets stuck sometimes. It’s really hard to get it open, and when I use a bit of force, kabam goes the elf Passionate Purple Eyeshadow.

elf Pigment Eyeshadow in Passionate Purple has its flaws, but I quite like this shadow. I just wished there were more color choices!
