OPI Last Friday Night Swatches & Review

OPI Last Friday Night SwatchesLast Friday Night is my favorite Katy Perry song. She sings about a stranger in her bed, smelling like a mini bar, dancing on tabletops, skinny dipping in the dark, breaking the law, a broken chandelier, and more mischief.

And when I first caught wind of the OPI Katy Perry Collection, I had heart palpitations!

If you’re a nailphile like I am, you know that Katy Perry is one of the few celebrities out there who embraces wild nails. (I love a person who’s fearless with their polish – wear what you want whenever you want. Amen, sister!)

After trying out OPI Black Shatter, I definitely had to test out OPI Last Friday Night! It’s so gorgeous in the bottle, but yeah, it’s really sheer, which has turned a lot of people off.

I’m not a fan of most sheer polishes, so I was determined to achieve the bottle color on my nails. And I think I was successful. Do you agree? Want to know the simple trick I used? (Hint: It involves a China Glaze nail polish!)

OPI Last Friday Night Review

By now almost everyone has seen OPI Last Friday Night paired with OPI Black Shatter (which I previously reviewed and swatched). And lots of people have seen OPI Last Friday Night swatched.

Instead of rehashing what has been beaten to death, I decided to show you a little trick you can use to achieve the bottle color. Like you, I wasn’t impressed with the sheerness of this polish by itself.

Color

Last Friday Night from the OPI Katy Perry Collection has a light-blue wash with 3 sizes of glitter particles suspended in it. This color’s so sheer that even with 3 coats, you’ll still have Visible Nail Line.

There’s a lot of depth to this polish, which makes it special – it’s almost like you’re looking into the ocean at sunken treasure. The shiny pieces of multicolored glitter are hexagonal. I can see gold, green, blue, and pink. And there’s also fine blue glitter to contrast with the larger pieces, which really adds extra dimension – love it!

How to Achieve the Bottle Color on Your Nails

Layering is the trick! All you have to do is apply one coat of a pigmented medium-to-dark blue before OPI Last Friday Night.

I used China Glaze Frostbite from 2007’s Ski Collection, which is actually a 2+coater. For the best effect, I suggest you use a 1-coater or something close to that. Why? It’ll prevent your tips from looking light even when the rest of your nail is darker.

If you look at my OPI Last Friday Night swatches above, you’ll see that my tips look whiter than the rest of my nail. Had I used a blue that covered the nail better in a single coat instead of China Glaze Frostbite, the finished look would be more uniform.

Texture

Glitter polish is notorious for being lumpy and bumpy, but surprisingly Last Friday Night by OPI wasn’t gritty. Yes, you’ll need to wear a top coat if you want that smooth, glass-like finish, but your nails won’t feel like sandpaper if you don’t.

Because this is a high-glitter nail polish, it’ll be harder to remove, but that comes with the territory. On the bright side, since glitter adheres to the nail so strongly, your manicure has a good chance of lasting longer than, say, a typical creme.

Formula & Application

Can you say Goop City? It’s super thick like glue that’s been in a bottle with the lid off. (Good luck if you want to paint thin layers!)

To avoid cuticle drag, I suggest waiting a good 5 to 10 minutes in between coats or you may get bald patches.

Ingredients

Those wanting to avoid toluene, formaldehyde, and DBP in their polish will be pleased to know that Last Friday Night from the OPI Katy Perry Collection doesn’t contain any of those.

    Pros

  • Contains no toluene, formaldehyde, or DBP
  • Fun dimensional glitter
  • Great for layering over other colors
  • Not gritty for a glitter polish
    Cons

  • Glitter nail polish is harder to remove
  • Very sheer (shows Visible Nail Line)
  • Thick formula

Final Verdict: 8.5/10

OPI Last Friday Night is a really pretty glitter polish that has oodles of personality, just like the singer herself.

While the formula is thick, sheer, and far from perfection, I think it transforms beautifully when layered over a solid color. This is a color that looks prettier in person than it does in pictures, and I recommend that you get it if you’re a glitter fan.

What are some of your favorite glitter polishes? Have you tried any of the other colors from the Katy Perry Collection by OPI?

OPI Last Friday Night is definitely a polish that looks so much better in person!

Nivedita, have you seen all of the Katy Perry polishes? Any favorites?

Thanks for Frostbite tip! I just ordered Teenage Dream and Last Friday Night. All the blogs I’ve read have slammed LFN for being too sheer. I’m glad there’s a way to get the blue shade of the bottle.

      You’re very welcome, Val! 😀

Let me know if you have any cool layering combinations with other sheer nail polishes to share. I have a bunch of sheer polishes but haven’t gotten around to playing with them all.

I love Last Friday Night by itself, but always wished I could get the bottle color. And you did it! Layering Last Friday Night over Frostbite was brilliant! It looks so beautiful!

      Hey Lindsay B!

Same here – I like the way it looks on its own, even though a lot of bloggers seem to complain about the sheerness. However, I like the bottle color more.

      Hey thenailaholic!

Glad that you found the layering tip helpful. I used to be frustrated by a lot of sheer polishes, but layering lets me crack them out more often. 🙂

I LOVE Last Friday Night nail polish! Just ordered it and Black Shatter! And I also ordered Frostbite after reading your blog. I always wanted the bottle color instead of the sheer blue sparkly color LFN gives, and thanks to you now I can achieve my desired look! Thanks sooooo completely much! Love your website, doll!

Good choices! And you’re going to love China Glaze Frostbite. When you build up that color, it’s so slick. Reminds me of car paint! And, yes, it’s also great for layering under OPI Last Friday Night. Glad I could help out! 😀

Just did this manicure this Thursday and love it! I had to keep returning to my polish supplier quite a bit because they never had Frostbite. If I had fully read the full blog entry beforehand, I would’ve settled with any of the other amazing blues that they did have in stock.

      Hey Cristina!

Glad you liked this colour! 🙂 It was my favourite from the OPI Katy Perry Collection.

Hmm…Frostbite is worth hunting down. It’s a slick vibrant blue that reminds me a lot of car paint! Hope you’re able to snag a bottle. They have it at several etailers and Sally Beauty Supply, I believe.

      Hey Emily!

Yeah, the bottle colour is deceiving. But the good thing is that at least you can layer it over a blue to achieve the bottle colour pretty easily. 🙂

I have to say I’m super impressed with the detail in this post including the great shots of ingredients, which is so vital for some people. Thanks for taking the time to include that. 🙂

      Hey Ingrid!

You’re welcome! 🙂 I’m glad that you appreciate it. When possible, I like to include the ingredients in case people are trying to avoid the Big 3 or maybe they have an allergy to something else. Or maybe they’re just curious and want to know what’s actually in the polish.

(I have a cosmetic allergy to some eye shadows due to a certain ingredient that I’ve narrowed it down to, so I also appreciate it when other bloggers list the ingredients.)
