OPI The Spy Who Loved Me Swatches & Review

OPI-The-Spy-Who-Loved-Me-Swatches-ReviewToday I have another shade from the Skyfall Collection – OPI The Spy Who Loved Me!

I’ve had a long-time fascination with spies. Their dramatic and dangerous lives are poetic romance realized.

If I ever tie the knot, it’ll probably be to an artist, a graphic designer, a writer, or a spy. They make my heart race.

What did you want to be when you were little? When I was a kid, I wanted to be an international spy. Why international? I wanted to travel the world and lead a dangerous, exciting, and unpredictable life.

I made coding and deciphering devices for my friends to use when we wrote notes to each other in class (which was all the time, by the way).

While my female friends always wanted to pretend to be princesses, I always asked to play a spy. They didn’t like that, so I pitched the idea of being a princess who was also a spy. That worked!

Although I wasn’t a tomboy, I did enjoying playing with the guys who were in a grade higher than me. In particular, there were two guys who were my ‘adventure mates’. They loved pretending to be spies with me (on equal terms, too! No sexism! YAY!), and we’d run all around the playground, making notes on everyone’s decidedly suspicious behaviour in our books. And we’d make up adventure stories in which we were the heroes, naturally, and our classmates were masterminding some malicious scheme that we were going to get to the bottom of. 😉 It was exciting, and our imaginations were often so vivid that we ended up scaring ourselves or becoming paranoid…haha!

So…I kind of, sort of like the name of this nail polish. 😉

Key Notes

OPI The Spy Who Loved Me Review

Colour

The Spy Who Loved Me by OPI is a classic red nail polish with gold glitter. However, because this polish has a bit of a jelly quality to it, the red covers the gold glitter and transforms it into red glitter that seems to have more depth. It’s like looking at something sparkling under coloured water. That’s the best way for me to describe it.

Finish

Despite having glitter, this polish is smooth, not gritty. It also has a jelly-like finish, but it’s more opaque and less sheer than a traditional jelly.

Application & Formula

This polish was a breeze to apply because it glides on effortlessly. You’ll need to use 3 coats because while it’s not super sheer, it’s also not as opaque as a standard creme.

Pros

  • Smooth glitter
  • Slight jelly quality
  • Applies easily
Cons

  • Gold glitter you see in the bottle looks red when actually on the nails because it’s covered by the jelly-like polish

Final Verdict: 7.5/10

This red has some oomph, thanks to the glitter and finish. While this is a very classic, pretty polish, I also feel like because there are so many red polishes on the market, this one doesn’t stand out as much as, say, OPI GoldenEye. But, if you don’t have a glittery, jellyish red, this is nice to own.

Do you have a lot of red nail polishes in your collection? Are you going to buy any polishes from the OPI Skyfall Collection? What movie collaboration would you like to see from OPI?

I’m curious to see Live and Let Die compared to Number One Nemesis from the Spiderman collection. They look very similar to me!

I also feel like I’ve seen The World Is Not Enough type of colour before, but not sure where!

Lovely swatches, as always. I must have Goldeneye *drools*

      Hey Kat!

Oh, if I had any colours from the Spider-Man collection, I would be able to compare it for you.

YES, you need GoldenEye! Need, not want.. Hehe!

Live and Let Die and Number One Nemesis are nothing alike. I only own LALD, but I’ve seen TONS of swatches of Number One Nemesis because I thought it looked like Lucertainly Look Marvelous before buying it (which it kinda did). The World Is Not Enough has a Zoya dupe. I don’t remember the name but if you do a search for a TWINE dupe the Zoya one will be the first to pop up. They are completely identical!! I definitely LOVE the collection. I used The Spy Who Loved Me today for my pedi 🙂 I also plan on using it as my Christmas mani with Goldeneye as an accent nail on my ring finger.

        Hey Lizmar!

Thanks for weighing in! 🙂 And good choice for wanting to use GoldenEye in your Christmas manicure. That gold is amazing!

      Hey mellinail!

Haha, yeah, there are soooooooo many reds on the market. That makes it really hard for one to stand out. (I really love red holos, but don’t have a good one yet. Still looking, although I’ve seen one by the brand, Jade, that wowed me!)

Keep your eyes peeled like a banana then because I’ll be showing off a couple more from this collection, and they’re the darker shades.

Aww…the pleasure is all mine. I love wearing nail polish, and since I don’t swatch them and actually wear them as manicures, I feel like I can really enjoy them while sharing them with lovely readers! 😀

Would this be good to put over another red? (Like Essie’s Size Matters [hee hee, that name…]) Is there enough glitter in it to be awesome over another red? 🙂

      Hey Charlotte!

Hahaha, yeah that polish name makes me giggle, too!

Yes, you could definitely layer this over another red. The glitter is fine, but there’s a lot of it.

      Hey OBP!

That would be a good comparison…Hmm…I think I have Smitten with Mittens around somewhere…(Haha, not sure if I can find it now.) :S

      Hey Monica Sanstrom!

Yes, I think that they’re similar because they have that translucence that makes the gold underneath look interesting.

Huummm – was not thinking I ‘needed’ Goldeneye – I am not a huge glitter fan. This one is OK – I bought it ’cause I needed to try it on the nail – I am a red fan. But I am liking You Only Live Twice and Casino Royal (topped with Man With the Golden Arm 18kt esp)…I am always looking for a good deeper purple/magenta or deeper red/magenta I can wear in winter – my go to has been OPI’s Let Me Entertain You – but thinking I can break that one up with YOLT now. Guess I need to look hard at Goldeneye again. I was thinking I did not want to deal with all the glitter flakes fall out esp in the removal.

      Hey beachgal!

Oh, the work it takes to remove GoldenEye is worth it! Look long and hard at it again. And again. And againnn….hehe! 😉 You know that’s exactly what I did. With GoldenEye on my nails, I was probably the vainest peacock in the zoo. 😉
