OPI GoldenEye Swatches & Review

OPI-GoldenEye-Swatches-ReviewGold nail polishes usually aren’t my thing because a lot of times, they make my hands look washed out.

Then OPI GoldenEye came into my life, and it took my breath away like seeing chiselled Rob Evans with or without a shirt. (Damnnn, it’s not summer, but it’s hot in here!) Never has a gold nail polish ever made me swoon as much as GoldenEye.

It hails from the highly anticipated OPI Skyfall Collection that’s inspired by the James Bond movies.

While I’m not a big fan of James Bond movies (they’re okay), I’m a huge fan of OPI GoldenEye!

As you can see from my photo, I have the mini bottle from The Bondettes Mini Nail Lacquers Set. How cute! I’m going to have to track down a full-size version of it because I already know I’ll be wearing this many times.

OPI GoldenEye Review

Colour

OPI GoldenEye makes your nails look luxurious because it’s very flashy and a true gold-bar type of gold! I really fell head over heels for this. I think it’s going to be a huge hit because while there are other gold polishes on the market, this one makes them pale in comparison!

One thing that stands out about GoldenEye by OPI is that there seems to be a mixture not only of gold, but also of an orange gold. It’s this combination that I believe gives it added dimension and makes the polish really pop!

Even if you dislike or feel ‘meh’ about gold nail polish, you should give this one a shot. It will pleasantly surprise you.

I love how it’s so flashy. It’ll be perfect for New Year’s Eve or some other celebratory event when you want your nails to look like jewelry.

Golds can be really hard for me to pull off, but this one seems to work with my yellow undertones. (If you have a much-richer skin tone than me, wow, this is going to look even more incredible on you! And if you wear it, please take photos of your manicure and show me because I’d like to see how luxe it’ll look.)

Finish

The finish is also truly spectacular. There are gold flakes, but it’s not gritty. They lie down flat, so the finish is very smooth.

Your nails will look very metallic and shiny – LOVE IT! Ahhh, when I get a full-size bottle of this, I think I’ll need to buy a back-up of it, too. I have a feeling that this one’s going to sell out fast.

It reminds me of what I loved about OPI Warm & Fozzie, except GoldenEye is way more gold-toned and flashy. But the flake-like finish is a little similar. GoldenEye seems to have more flakes, though.

Application & Formula

It’s very easy to apply – no thick consistency at all. In fact, this polish surprised me because it was so thin. I recommend that you wait a slightly longer amount of time after your final coat before using a fast-drying top coat, or you may get some tip wear like I did.

You may also want to add an extra coat and to put more polish onto your tips or even use a non-fast-drying top coat to reduce the chance of getting any shrinkage.

Also, you need to wear a minimum of 3 coats so that your nail line doesn’t show. While it’s a setback, the colour more than makes up for it.

 Polish Removal

Even though GoldenEye by OPI was a breeze to apply, it was surprisingly more challenging to remove than I thought. It’s not as bad as chunky, thick glitter polishes, but I did find that I had to scrub a little more than a shimmer polish.

While I like quick and easy polish removal, GoldenEye is worth the extra effort to remove. The colour is amazing, and if you disagree after seeing my photos, you should just try it for yourself because I think it looks better on the nail in person than it does in the bottle in person! (And it actually already does look quite striking in the bottle, so that’s saying something.)

Pros

  • Absolutely incredible gold that shines so vividly like jewelry on the nail
  • Golden flakes lie flat, so there’s no grittiness
  • Has a combination of gold & orange for added depth
  • Looks more luxurious than it costs
Cons

  • Thin formula makes this more prone to shrinkage from fast-drying top coats

Final Verdict: 9.5/10

When you see GoldenEye at Trade Secrets (or wherever you buy your OPI from), I suggest that you grab this baby if you’re even remotely interested in it. I can see this one selling out really fast. You may even consider buying a back-up bottle if you love it and will be wearing it often.

Coming from a person who isn’t usually wowed by gold nail polishes, I can tell you that this one is an absolute must-have in your collection! I was surprised just how much I loved it.

Do you like gold nail polishes in general? What metallic polish do you wear the most? Are you a fan of James Bond?

Edit: Yay! Trade Secrets retweeted my tweet about this polish! 😀

      Hey Gelic’ nail art!

It truly is a remarkable polish because I usually don’t get excited about golds, and this one nearly gave me a heart attack! The finish is very interesting – not like a basic foil or metallic. This is back-up worthy! And back-up of your back-up worthy. 😉

I’m a huge James Bond fan and have been looking forward to Skyfall. It’s taken me a while to adjust to Daniel Craig’s grittier, harder Bond, but he plays him more like the books depict him to be, which is allright in my book. 🙂

I am really loving the new OPI GoldenEye. It’s pretty darn spectacular and I think I must get a full sized bottle,

      Hey Gwen!

Who’s your favourite James Bond character? Is it a Bond Girl or actually James Bond? Have you read the books, too?

Same here – a full-size bottle is a must! I’ll probably buy 2 of them (y’know…’just in case’). Oh polish addiction!

I actually love Judi Dench’s portrayal of M. As for my favourite Bond, purists might cringe, but I love Pierce Brosnan’s Bond. And yep, I’ve read all the books. They are a little dated now, but still a good read.

      Hey Marisa!

Thank you so much! I know that this will look remarkable on your skin tone. It would be so…POW! (Haha, that’s not really a sentence, but that’s what this polish does to me.) 😉 Sentences? What are those?

Oh man…especially because you’ve never really had a gold polish and because this one is seriously the best, you’re going to fall in love with it! 🙂

I couldn’t believe it. This really is one of the few golds that I can wear, but not JUST wear. This polish is spectacular – makes me feel really fancy!

I love this color, I agree it looks super luxurious. I wonder do you happen to have OPI Rising Star? They look similar to me, but I think golden eye is much truer to gold. Either way I think I’m going to end up getting a bottle as well once its out in my city. =D

      Hey Vivian!

No, I don’t own OPI Rising Star, but from what I can see in online swatches, Rising Star doesn’t seem to have the big flakes like OPI GoldenEye. GoldenEye is flashier.

Gorgeous! I love this shade – golds and oranges… two of my favorite colors 🙂 This is especially perfect for the holidays. I would love to wear this and then go over it with a layer of gold chunky glitter polish from Sephora OPI, it’s a more yellow gold… and I’m not even a big glitter polish person, I just find these sorts of shades so pretty!

WOW. Amazing. I should definitely get my hand on this. I’m not a huge fan of James Bond either, BUT I used to play Goldeneye for Nintendo 64 a lot when I was younger 😀

Cool! Haha, I usually just watched my older brother play video games because I was horrendous at them. Whenever I needed to jump, I’d usually jump off the cliff to my death…over and over and over again. And my hands would get all sweaty and tense because I found it very stressful. 😛

Thank you! 🙂 You know…you should give this one a shot. I really can’t imagine this blingy gold looking blah on anyone because the flakes are so luxe. At least take a look at it in the store. It might sway you more in person. 😉

The model on the OPI website wears a dark red polish (i think its Skyfall) and on the UNDERSIDE of her nails GoldenEye. i think that looks incredible. it looks so interesting ! as soon as your nails are grown longer could u think of trying that ?

      Hey Randi!

It’s a very cool look indeed, but I really dislike getting nail polish on the underside of my nails, so I probably won’t be trying out the look. Sorry! I hope you don’t think I’m being snobby, but polish underneath my nails feels very weird, and I just know that it would bother me a lot.

Definitely it’s in a class all its own, and yes, it realllly wowed me! Especially since I don’t usually like gold on my nails, this one took me completely by surprise. 🙂 If you can, get this one. It’ll probably sell out fast!

You totally hit the nail on the head when you said this makes other golds pale in comparison- pale in the literal sense. It’s so GOLD!! This definitely won’t be confused for champagne or a nudey gold, this baby is in your face gold bar gold and I love it! I don’t know that it’s particularly flattering on my skin but luckily for me- I don’t care! Ha. 😉 I’m really glad I picked this up and even though I know I’ll never need a second bottle I do kinda wanna grab a backup “just in case”. 🙂

      Hey Nicole!

YES – gold bar type of gold, indeed! 😀 So decadent and very appropriate to tie in with the James Bond theme.

And it makes me smile knowing that you wear polishes you LOVE, regardless of whether or not they complement your skin tone. That’s a great attitude to have!
