NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils Swatches & Review (Black Bean, Milk, Cottage Cheese, Strawberry Milk, French Fries, Horse Raddish, Lime, Purple & Rocky Mountain Green)

NYX Jumbo Eye PencilsMy makeup box is filled with a spectrum of shades, especially when it comes to eye shadow. Some colors I have may lead you to believe that I moonlight as a circus freak – hot pink, flashy turquoise, banana yellow, and even a saturated orange.

I believe that if you use the right blending techniques, you can pull off any color no matter how wild. And if you’re really uncomfortable, using an eye-shadow base beneath your shadow can really transform the finish and overall appearance.

Over the course of several months, I bought a bunch of NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils. They’re affordable, they come in tons of great shades, and they make an excellent addition to your makeup collection.

I’ve swatched the 9 colors I own. Let me know which one you like most!

NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils Review (Black Bean, Milk, Cottage Cheese, Strawberry Milk, French Fries, Horse Raddish, Lime, Purple & Rocky Mountain Green)

Have you ever bought an eye shadow that looked incredible in the package but wore it at home and the pigmentation was lackluster? I’ve been there.

A great solution to add more oomph is to wear a color base underneath your shadow. NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils are great ones to try. They come in a pencil, which makes it handy to take with you anywhere. Plus you have total control because of the point.

These are the 9 NYX Jumbo Pencils I have:

  • Black Bean – Black with slight sheen
  • Milk – Matte white
  • Cottage Cheese – Pearly white
  • Strawberry Milk – Shimmery pastel pink
  • Purple – Medium purple with a hint of blue
  • French Fries – Shimmery copper-brown
  • Lime (formerly Lemon) – Shimmery light golden grass green
  • Horse Raddish – Shimmery grass green
  • Rocky Mountain Green – Shimmery medium gemstone green

Aside from Purple, which went on patchy and chunky, all of the other colors apply very creamy and are very pigmented.

You must wear a good eye-shadow primer like the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Eden (that I’ve previously reviewed). If you wear this on naked lids, be prepared for crease city within mere minutes unless you have incredibly dry eyelids.

Another tip I can give you is to layer this on thinly – this really reduces your chances of creasing. And although you can smooth it out over your lids with a clean fingertip, I suggest using a synthetic concealer brush so you apply the product evenly.

And some people seem confused and think that a NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil is the same as an eye-shadow primer. It’s not. A primer’s job is to ensure that your shadow stays put on your lid for a longer amount of time. The NYX Jumbo Pencil doesn’t do that. It’s a color base, which merely provides extra color depth. For instance, you could use Black Bean under a medium purple to intensify and darken the purple. Or you could use Milk under a bright shadow to help it pop.

One more thing: using them as eyeliners is really clumsy if you use the pencil directly on your eyelid. Instead, try using an eyeliner brush to pick up and to apply the product along your lash line. Then set it by putting a powder eye shadow in a similar color on top.

    Pros

  • Intensifies hues when worn under eye shadows
  • Can transform the finish (i.e. matte to shimmer) when layered
  • Convenient travel-friendly stick
  • Available in a wide variety of shades
  • Inexpensive
  • Easy to use
  • Doesn’t contain Bismuth Oxychloride, which is a known allergen
    Cons

  • Must be worn thinly & over eye primer or it’ll crease badly
  • NYX is a brand that can be hard to find

Final Verdict: 8/10

NYX Jumbo Eyeshadow Pencils are perfect for putting the magic back into old shadows that you may have neglected. And they can transform the finish when layered.

Give these a try – they’re affordable and they come in so many gorgeous shades that you’re bound to find at least one that appeals to you.

Which is your favorite NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil? What’s your favorite way to use it?

I love NYX jumbo eye pencils, Milk is an awesome base and really makes your colors brighter. I have recently found using Oyster as a base is great to and gives your shadow a neat affect 🙂

Good choices, Putri! That depends on what type of effect you’re seeking – they both make your eye shadows pop in different ways.

Milk is stark white and offers a matte finish. It’ll make your shadows brighter. Milk is great for when you use fun colors or colors that tend to be too dark and you wish they were a little lighter.

I actually bought the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencil in Yogurt not long ago, and it’s so pretty! It’s a frosty nude pink that makes your eyes pop because it catches the light and adds dimension. It won’t brighten up your shadows as much as Milk, but it will deliver a frosty finish that’s hot for evening looks. Yogurt is also great for using on the inner corners of your eyes to really brighten them for a fresh, sexy look.

      Hey Kayla!

Yes, they do sell these in Canada. Rexall has them. But if there isn’t one nearby, Cherry Culture and the NYX Canada website both ship to Canada.
