NYX Eyeshadow Trio Team Spirit Swatches & Review

NYX Eyeshadow Trio Team Spirit Swatches & ReviewNot long ago, I did an Eye of the Day look (“Clown Eyes“). I used all the colours in this NYX Eyeshadow Trio Team Spirit palette as well as a couple of other hues.

I was pleased with the end result, especially since it was a personal challenge to venture outside my comfort zone of dark, smokey-eye looks.

While I’m not going to be shifting gears to super-colourful looks regularly just yet, it has revived my desire to play around with shadows and to experiment with combinations that I previously thought would be hard to sport in a single look.

Let me tell you some specifics of each colour and how they fared as I wore them throughout the day and into the night.

NYX Eyeshadow Trio Team Spirit Review

Colour

Each colour in the Team Spirit NYX trio doesn’t have an individual name, so for this review, I’ll just call them Blue, Yellow, and Pink to keep it simple and straight-forward.

  • Blue: Cornflower blue
  • Yellow: Medium gold-yellow
  • Pink: Cotton-candy pink with a tinge of purple

These colours definitely seem very peppy to me, and I could see them on a cheerleader. The palette’s name, Team Spirit, suits it very well.

Pigmentation

Compared to the way they look in the pan, these all apply much paler than expected. If you don’t use an eye primer or you want shadows that don’t require one, you’re better off skipping this. They only show up with a primer, but they’re still very light.

The yellow showed up the best and catches the light very nicely. I thought it highlighted the inner tear duct area and inner third/half of the lid well.

The pink can look a bit purple sometimes and has a bit of a sheen. I was intimidated by the pink the most because sometimes with a really pigmented pink, you can look like you have Pink Eye! This pink, however, is sheer enough to look soft and pretty instead of sickly.

The blue was the most disappointing of the bunch, which is too bad because I was most looking forward to it. The pigmentation is extremely light even with a primer underneath. It also looked chalky compared to the other two.

In my hand swatches, the colours may look strong, but I found with this palette, when I blended out the colours even slightly with a fluffy brush, it muted them significantly. It seems that the colour pay-off was a whole different story on the lid than on my hand.

Longevity

After about 4-5 hours, I found that all of these colours faded really fast! The colourful look wound up being extremely muted. Very disappointing, and I even used a good eye primer as usual!

How Can I Make The Colours Last Longer?

If you’re really set on making this palette work, you could use a colourful eye shadow base to ramp up the colour. I would suggest the NYX Jumbo Eye Pencils. (See my swatches and reviews here and some more here.) But even if you do, you must use an eye primer under everything because the Jumbo Pencils will crease like crazy if you don’t.

Value

Yes, Team Spirit is a very affordable NYX eye-shadow trio. You get to try out 3 colours without gouging your wallet. But…in my opinion, that is overshadowed by the fact that the pigmentation is weak and the colours fade even further over time regardless if you use a primer. For this reason, I was unhappy with this purchase and, so, this product is “BUSTED” on Swatch And Learn!

Animal-Friendliness

NYX Cosmetics is a cruelty-free brand.

    Pros
  • Lets you try 3 funky colours for a low price
  • Animal cruelty-free
  • Hypoallergenic
  • No Bismuth Oxychloride (a known allergen)
    Cons
  • Poor pigmentation on lids, especially after blending
  • Fades significantly through the day
  • NYX can be difficult for Canadians to find if there isn’t a Rexall nearby & if you don’t want to shop online

Final Verdict: 5.5/10

I was so excited about this palette, but it left a lot to be desired. I can’t recommend Team Spirit to you in good conscience. Move aside, cheerleaders, because when it comes to this palette, unfortunately I’m the cheerless leader. Rah rah rah becomes blah blah blah!

Have you ever worn blue, pink, and yellow in a single eye look? What’s the most number of colours you’ve ever rocked all at once? Did an eye shadow ever let you down big time?

I’m sorry but that tagline on the cover: “For sexy babe’s eyes only!” totally made me LOL. ๐Ÿ˜€

That’s sad that it’s not as pigmented but it might be a good thing for people who shy away from color. It’ll make for a great soft, albeit colorful, look that can be a great way to start wearing more color. You know, to ease yourself into it. ๐Ÿ™‚ I’m disappointed to hear tho that it fades significantly throughout the day, even with primer. I’ve heard so many people rave about their single eyeshadows tho, so I dunno if this is an isolated case to trios? I’ve never tried NYX tho, so I can’t say.

Maybe you should try the WetNWild eyeshadows. I was curious bec I saw so many good reviews and their singles are only $1.99 at Walmart so I thought, why not? Nutty has become one my go to shadows for a quick eye that looks like you spent time on it. The palettes are pretty good too, like Silent treatment or the 8-pan ones that I can never seem to find.. ๐Ÿ™

      Hey Carmela!

Yeah, it is pretty ridiculous. The first time I saw it, I also laughed. Guess that means we’re all “sexy babes”. ๐Ÿ˜›

I don’t even think I’d recommend this to people who like lighter colours, either, because even those people would want the colour to remain true from when they applied it up until they remove it. Fading is not acceptable in my book because there are so many other shadows that can last. But I’ll give NYX kudos for a good price – you can try 3 shadows without paying a lot.

This is definitely an isolated case, and not to trios. I have a bunch of eye-shadow trios and they last on me very well. I also have many single shadows from them that last. I think the Team Spirit palette just….lost its pep?

I’ve been interested in trying the Wet N Wild shadows, but I think they have bismuth (do they?). Not sure. And I almost never shop at Wal-Mart (except the one time I bought Hard Candy products), so it’s not easy for me to obtain. The swatches I’ve seen on other blogs of their colours are amazing!

That’s true about fading eyeshadows tho.

Good to know it’s an isolated case! I’ve been looking at them whenever I find myself at Rexall but never really got around to trying any. What would you recommend?

I can get you some tomorrow! I’m headed there anyway. I also checked the ingredients and no bismuth. ๐Ÿ™‚ Send me a list of what you want on my email. And no, don’t be shy. It’s the least I can do for your kindness and encouragement. ๐Ÿ˜€

If you’re interested in their single shadows, I’d say “Black” is great – dark, very pigmented, and easy to blend. I use it nearly every single day.

As for the trios palette I’d recommend, probably “Sweet Lagoon/Aqua/Ocean” but really the only standout colour is Ocean and you have to wear it with a primer to work. They sell it as a single shadow, but the colour was different (and not as good as the one in the trio palette). Every time I wear Ocean from the trio, I get compliments. The other two blues in the palette are just okay – nothing to rave about, so I’m not sure if you’d want to get the whole palette just for one colour – heh, I did!

Wow, no bismuth? Hmm…I’m not sure specifically what I’d want. I’m really into any greens and teals. (I’ll e-mail you and tell you the same thing in case you don’t see this.) Your generosity and support blows my mind! ๐Ÿ˜€

Too bad the pigmentation isn’t great. It looks great on you. Way out of my comfort zone too – lol. After seeing it on you I would consider colours like that.

      Hey Nicole!

Thank you so much! ๐Ÿ™‚ Yeah, if they fixed the pigmentation, this palette could’ve been a real winner.

And I hope you do try some looks out of your comfort zone, too. ๐Ÿ™‚ It’s fun to experiment, and even if you decide that you don’t like it, at least you gave it a whirl. And sometimes you find that you can actually wear colours that you previously thought were difficult to wear….like how the pink was for me.

Lol! While you may not be cheering for these colours, I for one am giving you a big cheer for the lovely look you came up with. HONESTLY… I probably wouldn’t even be able to open these ๐Ÿ˜‰ lol
Maybe it is good that I don’t venture into the world of makeup… because if I get bitten like I did by the nail-polish bug I’d go broke… ๐Ÿ™‚

      Hey Marta!

I’m glad that you like the look I came up with. Haha, when I put on the first colour, I thought, “Oh, this is going to look weird…” but I kept going anyway. And when you put eye liner on, it’s amazing how it really pulls the look together.

Haha, yeah, you’re better off saving your money for amazing polish and stamping plates! ๐Ÿ˜€

Did you end up getting either (or both) of the 2 new plates?

      Hey Alexis!

NYX has a lot of great shadows, but this palette was a disappointment. Oh yeah…their jumbo pencils are awesome. I’m going to have to try them underneath this palette since it needs the extra colour boost.

      Hey Miss L!

Thanks – I’m glad that you found it useful! ๐Ÿ˜€

Hopefully NYX reformulates it because fading so dramatically after just a few hours is very disappointing.

Too bad that the colors aren’t that pigmented, that’s parts of the reason I’m afraid too buy the eyeshadows – I so far have the Nude on Nude (small one) , The Make up box and I while I think they aren’t that bad I still think there are better brands for eyeshadow like Sleek. However I do like their jumbo pencils and I recently bought all of the Slide-on pencils and they look to be ok, I did got 2 of their creamy eyeshadows for free so hopefully they will turn out ok ๐Ÿ™‚

      Hey Elyne!

I haven’t tried Sleek yet, but am really curious about it. And I’ve heard great things about the NYX Slide-on pencils – supposedly they’re very similar to the Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-on pencils.

Please let me know how the cream shadows work out for you. I haven’t tried those and have been curious if they wear well for a long time.
