Nicole by OPI Pretty in Plum Swatches & Review

Nicole-by-OPI-Pretty-in-Plum-Swatches-ReviewNicole by OPI Pretty in Plum is yet another shade I have to show you from the upcoming Selena Gomez Collection due out in January 2013.

It may be because I’ve watched West Side Story so many times, but when I first read the name, a mental image of Maria (played by Natalie Wood) dancing around the sewing room and singing “I Feel Pretty” immediately sprung to mind.

Indeed, Natalie Wood was so gorgeous. And…confession time! Although that musical came out waaaaay before my time, when my father introduced me to the movie when I was a kid, I had the biggest crush on Richard Beymer (who played Tony, Maria’s love interest). It was after their duet, Tonight, that I swooned. Think hearts instead of pupils. I used to imagine that he was singing “Mary” instead of “Maria” in this song where he expresses his love for her.) 😉

Hahaha, and I always thought it was hilarious that the gang members (the Jets and the Sharks) danced ballet! Don’t think I would ever be intimidated by any gang who can pirouette and have an entire dance choreography that they perform on the street. (And, for the record, I thought the Sharks were hotter than the Jets.)

Ooohhh, and who can forget the hilarious Officer Krupke number? That song still cracks me up today!

Okay, but back to the nail polish, right?

Key Notes

Nicole by OPI Pretty in Plum Review

Colour

Nicole by OPI Pretty in Plum is a saturated purple with personality. It’s not flat or one-dimensional at all! Even in dim light, you get that ‘glowing-from-within’ look that makes for an electric manicure.

Although I wasn’t able to get bottle shots in the sunlight, you can see from my manicure photos in the sunlight that there’s a pinkish shimmer that shines through. It’s a pink that’s just a few shades away from the base purple, so instead of being a dramatic contrast, it complements the purple in a more subtle way.

This is one of those jewel-tone polishes that springs to life on your nails. I think it looks better on nails than it does just in the bottle.

Finish

Nicole by OPI Pretty in Plum has a shimmery finish that’s gorgeous and has that ‘lit-from-within’ look I mentioned. Since it’s not glittery, the polish is easy to remove.

Application & Formula

I had no major issues with this polish in terms of application. It went where I wanted it to, and the formula wasn’t too thin or too thick. And with just 2 medium coats, I was able to achieve full opacity.

Pros

  • Beautiful, saturated, lit-from-within purple
  • Pretty pinkish shimmer
  • Great formula makes for an easy application
Cons

  • Not the most original or mind-blowing colour (but it’s still very pretty)

Final Verdict: 8/10

I really enjoyed wearing this punchy purple and kept looking down at my nails to enjoy that ‘lit-from-within’ effect. However, to spice it up a bit, I did end up layering some glitter over. Which one? Hint: It’s another polish from the Nicole by OPI Selena Gomez Collection! 😉 Review on that one coming soon.

Do any of your nail polishes remind you of movies? What’s the last musical you watched? Are you a fan of lit-from-within finishes?

      Hey Icequeen81!

I only wore this polish with a top coat, but even before I used the top coat, I remember it being still shiny. 🙂 All my photos in this post are with the top coat.

      Hey Meredith!

That’s a very good question! I took both bottles out to look at them side-by-side. They’re not identical, but they have a similar vibe. Pretty in Plum is definitely more pink-toned than Suzi & the 7 Dusseldorfs.

      Hey Charlotte!

Although I liked it by itself, I have to say that with glitter on top, it looked AMAZING! I hope to get the review up realllly soon. 😉 (Psst…I’m actually going to work on the post right after replying to your comment!)

      Hey Karrie!

You should try it with glitter on top, too. 😉 I’ll be showing you one layering combination really soon. I think this purple makes a wonderful base for chunky glitter on top.

This is a really pretty shade of purple, I like it :). As I think someone else commented, this does look a little like OPI’s Suzi and the 7 Dusseldorfs to me–not the same, but similar. However, I think I like this one just a little bit better!

      Hey Jessica!

Definitely they’re similar, but the pink makes this polish look ‘smoother’ and more cohesive than the OPI. Both are lovely, and I guess it’s just a matter of personal preference.
