By now, I think pretty much all beauty lovers have heard of the Maybelline Vivids.
I purchased the Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Shocking Coral quite some time ago and have been wearing it when I want lip colour to brighten up my complexion.
In the past, I’ve been really into lip glosses, but lately I’ve been trying out more lipsticks.
It’s fun how by just changing your lip colour, you can completely transform your look. And the right bold lipstick can make you feel like a million bucks.
Shocking Coral was the first of the Maybelline Vivids that I tried, and I’m digging this for spring!

Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Shocking Coral Review
Colour
It’s no secret that I’m a fan of corals. Whether they lean pink or orange, they really put me in a happy mood during the spring and summer, especially!
Although I tend to wear corals on my nails, I decided to try the Maybelline Vivids in Shocking Coral to see how it would work with my complexion.
I just love how bright and cheerful it looks on my golden undertone. It almost makes me look like I have a slight tan, but what I love is that Shocking Coral is bright and spring-like without being neon.
Hehe, I love wearing neon pinks on my lips sometimes, but those aren’t for everyday wear. Shocking Coral, on the other hand is a shade that I can see being worn on a daily basis without being tacky.
This is a coral that leans more on the pink side, which is maybe why I felt comfortable wearing it. (I’ve actually never tried any oranges, even orange-leaning corals, on my lips.)
Pigmentation
With just a few swipes directly from the lipstick tube, I was able to get the pigmentation you see in my above swatches. Now, I’m not a lipstick expert, but for me, that pigmentation is pretty darn good.
It’s not fully opaque, but you get good coverage. It didn’t look like I could completely covered my lips. You could still see a little bit of my natural lips peeking through. This kind of coverage is very comfortable for me.
Application & Formula
As I’m trying more and more lipsticks, I realize that the formulas have come such a long way. Gone are the days when lipsticks are uncomfortable on the lips.
Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Shocking Coral was comfortable to wear. It went on very smoothly, and it felt hydrating. Of course, it wasn’t moisturizing like a lip balm, but it didn’t tug on my lips or make them feel dry.
When I rubbed my lips together, they felt great – supple and with a slight slippery feeling. But this slippery feeling wasn’t too slick like chicken grease…haha! 😉 It was just smooth enough.
Before I wore this, I put on a little lip balm and let it sink in as I did the rest of my makeup. Then, I gently blotted my lips on a tissue paper so my lips weren’t too slippery before I applied the lipstick. (If your lips are too slippery, the lipstick will apply too sheer.)
Also important to note is that you should try to exfoliate your lips prior to wearing this. Although the formula glides on easily, if you have dry skin, I noticed that this lipstick can emphasize it.
Finish
The Maybellilne Shocking Coral lipstick is creamy and has a sheen to it. It’s not as shiny as a lip gloss, but it’s definitely not dry-looking or matte.
Lasting Power
On me, Shocking Coral typically lasts 5 hours before I start to notice it fading. And, of course, the lasting power is significantly shorter if I eat something messy. But, if I eat food that isn’t greasy or messy, it’s very long-lasting!
When it does start to fade, it leaves behind what looks like a nice stain. But, if you use a makeup wipe and/or a wash cloth, you can get all the colour off with a little elbow grease. It’s not the type of stain that you’ll have for 24 hours or anything like that.
Fragrance
There’s a noticeable smell to this, unfortunately. I would prefer it to not smell like anything, but it smelled a bit like Play Doh.
You get this smell from when you first apply it, but after a while, it seems to go away and isn’t intrusive.
This could be a deal breaker for some, but even though I have a sensitive nose, I was able to get over it because it faded away quickly.
Packaging
I’m not crazy about the tacky packaging. It comes in a rectangular tube with a silver base and bright orange-red case. But…it’s not a deal breaker.
The good thing? You shouldn’t lose it in your purse because it’s so darn bright!
The top of the cap allows you to see the actual lipstick inside, but because the cap is tinted orange-red, you can’t accurately tell what colour the lipstick is.

Final Verdict: 9/10
The Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids Shocking Coral is a shade that I absolutely love wearing! It’s a happy, carefree shade, and I like how it’s not a fussy colour or one that attracts too much attention. This is a great everyday bright shade for spring and summer when you want to brighten your complexion without screaming, “Look at me” like a neon.
Would you wear Shocking Coral? Have you tried any of the Maybelline Color Sensational Vivids? What’s the brightest lip colour you’ve ever dared to wear?
I have Fuschia Flash and I LOVE it. It’s so bright and hydrating. I’m getting this one next, as I am a sucker for coral. 😀
Hey Sarah!
Someone told me that it’s a dupe for MAC Candy Yum-Yum Lipstick, but I haven’t tried Fuchsia Flash yet, so I’ll have to keep my eyes peeled for that.
It looks like a lovely colour, could you maybe also post photos where we see your whole face just to give us an idea how it looks when not so zoomed in. Thanks! 🙂

Hey Stella!
At this time, I’m not comfortable regularly posting full-face photos. It took a lot of internal debating to even post the ones of myself the two times I met Suzi.
For amazing full-face photos with swatches, I refer you to Temptalia. As far as I know, she always has full-face photos when she reviews lipsticks. 🙂
I love it! I have been looking at MAC’s Vegas Volt – do you know if this compares in any way? Thanks!
Hey Laura!
Sorry, I don’t own that MAC colour, so I can’t make a fair comparison. From what I’ve seen just from online swatches, I’d definitely say that Vegas Volt looks way more orange-peachy than Shocking Coral.
Oh! I really like the packaging. 😀 I don’t think I’ve seen these…. but then I don’t generally peek over at the Maybelline. LOL It’s funny, I was a tad obsessed with the brand as a teen, but now that I’m older I don’t give it much thought. Might have to re-check.

Hey Lizzy!
Haha, well, at least you dig the packaging! 😉 I really would’ve liked to see something sleeker.
Do you have Milani Flamingo Pose? How does this compare? I’m not sure if I have room in my stash for 2 super bright coral lipsticks since I wear it so infrequently.
Hey Heidi!
I haven’t worn Milani Flamingo Pose, but yes, I have it. I just took a quick flash photo of it side-by-side with Shocking Coral in the tube and posted it on my Instagram account. You can see it here: http://instagram.com/p/XqeWZfu0WM/
You are AWESOME! Thank you for the side-by-side.
It looks like Shocking Coral is less “shocking” than Flamingo Pose. I need to check it out now since I really love Flamingo Pose but it is too bright for me to feel comfortable wearing it. Hopefully Shocking Coral will be a winner for me.
You’re very welcome, Heidi! 🙂 Glad I could help.
Let me know how you like Shocking Coral if you decide to get it. 🙂
This color is insanely vibrant and gorgeous! Love it!

Hey Yolennie!
Whenever I wear Shocking Coral, I get a lot of compliments, so it’s definitely a winner. It really brightens my complexion, so I reach for it often when I think I’m looking a bit tired.
Gorgeous shade!

Hey Olivia!
And super easy to wear as well! Gotta love that!
I’m not sure how this color would look on me, but I love it on you! Such a pretty, vibrant color. I disagree with you about the packaging,m though- I think it looks sleek and modern! I think I may have to find a color I like in this collection just for the cute tube! 😉

Hey another Cristina!
I like the colour of the case, but wish that the tube was more streamlined. It seems bulky to me, but maybe that’s because of the very straight edges for the rectangle. I like rounded corners.

I don’t need it…

That’s such a pretty color and I need it in my school bag right now!
Hey Kayla!
Hahahaha, you’re so cute! Thanks for giving me a good giggle! 🙂
Hope you love it – it’s a fun and easy-to-wear shade!
I love the colour of this lipstick and it looks great on you. I am going to look for this next time I go shopping so I can try it out.
the clor of this lipstick is so cool
Of all the cosmetics you reviewed, I would REALLY like to try the MAC lip color. It looks so nice and I have heard great things about it. I’ve never tried ANY MAC cosmetics before either.
Hey Mindy!
Definitely try a MAC lipstick if you get a chance! There are so many different colours and finishes. My recommendation, if you’re into bold lip colours is MAC Heroine Lipstick. That purple is my all-time favourite! So glad they made it a permanent colour!
